Introduction to Painting in Watercolor

Get started with the fundamentals of watercolor painting,
learning how to choose the right papers, paints and brushes.
Study the color wheel, practice mixing colors and learn about
value as you explore techniques in direct painting, wet-on-wet,
dry brush and washes. You will be painting still lifes by the end
of the class.

Simple Solutions for Making Better
Watercolor Paintings

Adopting an artistic checklist will bring about striking
improvements and insights into your work. Dennis will guide
you in developing your own individual checklist as you consider
placing the focal point, directing the viewer's eye, creating
interesting shapes, choosing a color scheme, etc. Create a new
masterpiece each week as you demystify painting.

Expressive Brushwork for Watercolor
DENNIS PENDLETON
ABILITY: INTERMEDIATE, ADVANCED
Learn what different brushstrokes can accomplish after
exploring the watercolor of John Singer Sargent. Brush
exercises practicing techniques such as pressure, speed, dry
brush, two color strikes, and direct painting will lead you into
your actual paintings. Transform your watercolor into a visual
delight with a few perfectly placed strokes of the brush.

The Power of Color
for the Watercolorist

Working with the color wheel as a guide, each week compose a
painting to master one key color scheme. Dennis will teach you
about color relationships as you practice split complementary,
triadic, tetradic, and analogous color combinations. Come
make dynamic, harmonious, and meaningful color choices in
your own works of art.

Fundamentals of Landscape Painting
LORENZO CHAVEZ
ABILITY: ADVANCED, INTERMEDIATE
We will focus on the ‘how and why’ of landscape painting.
Students will improve their composition skills, understand
the importance of simplification of shapes and masses,
learn about values, atmospheric perspective, create a
center of interest, the use of edges, drawing and color.
This workshop is for those who already enjoy working with
pastels and/or oils, or committed students who wish to
experiment with these mediums.

Dynamic Painting with Cold Wax

You will create multiple paintings using cold wax medium
and oil paint. Through demos and hands-on painting, be
prepared to: learn about the do’s and don’ts of creating
with cold wax, discover numerous techniques to create
texture and build color, create dynamic compositions
using shape, line, color, texture and more with this
versatile medium. All materials supplied.

Watercolor Painting

ABILITY: BEGINNER, INTERMEDIATE
Learn how to create lively watercolor paintings with
free and generous brush strokes. During this workshop,
students are invited to try a variety of watercolor
painting strategies and techniques to create loose,
intuitive, free, and spontaneous effects. You will learn
about color mixing, glazes, composition, drying time,
thickness, and edges while painting short, warm-up
sketches and finished landscape or cityscape paintings.
