Introduction to Painting in Watercolor<br />

Get started with the fundamentals of watercolor painting,<br />

learning how to choose the right papers, paints and brushes.<br />

Study the color wheel, practice mixing colors and learn about<br />

value as you explore techniques in direct painting, wet-on-wet,<br />

dry brush and washes. You will be painting still lifes by the end<br />

of the class.<br />

Adopting an artistic checklist will bring about striking<br />

improvements and insights into your work. Dennis will guide<br />

you in developing your own individual checklist as you consider<br />

placing the focal point, directing the viewer's eye, creating<br />

interesting shapes, choosing a color scheme, etc. Create a new<br />

masterpiece each week as you demystify painting.<br />

Expressive Brushwork for Watercolor<br />

Learn what different brushstrokes can accomplish after<br />

exploring the watercolor of John Singer Sargent. Brush<br />

exercises practicing techniques such as pressure, speed, dry<br />

brush, two color strikes, and direct painting will lead you into<br />

your actual paintings. Transform your watercolor into a visual<br />

delight with a few perfectly placed strokes of the brush.<br />

Working with the color wheel as a guide, each week compose a<br />

painting to master one key color scheme. Dennis will teach you<br />

about color relationships as you practice split complementary,<br />

triadic, tetradic, and analogous color combinations. Come<br />

make dynamic, harmonious, and meaningful color choices in<br />

your own works of art.<br />

Fundamentals of Landscape Painting<br />

LORENZO CHAVEZ<br />

ABILITY: ADVANCED, INTERMEDIATE<br />

We will focus on the ‘how and why’ of landscape painting.<br />

Students will improve their composition skills, understand<br />

the importance of simplification of shapes and masses,<br />

learn about values, atmospheric perspective, create a<br />

center of interest, the use of edges, drawing and color.<br />

This workshop is for those who already enjoy working with<br />

pastels and/or oils, or committed students who wish to<br />

experiment with these mediums.<br />

Dynamic Painting with Cold Wax<br />

with cold wax, discover numerous techniques to create<br />

using shape, line, color, texture and more with this<br />

Learn how to create lively watercolor paintings with<br />

free and generous brush strokes. During this workshop,<br />

students are invited to try a variety of watercolor<br />

painting strategies and techniques to create loose,<br />

intuitive, free, and spontaneous effects. You will learn<br />

about color mixing, glazes, composition, drying time,<br />

thickness, and edges while painting short, warm-up<br />

sketches and finished landscape or cityscape paintings.<br />
