Painting Hands<br />

Learn the anatomy of the hand from an artist's perspective.<br />

Draw the hand in charcoal and pencil. The next day we will<br />

paint the hand in oils (or whatever medium you prefer). We will<br />

review historical paintings from the old masters to modern<br />

masters specifically studying how they painted hands.<br />

Color Charts: A Practical Beginning<br />

to Understanding Color<br />

Learning to make color charts is a great way to gain some<br />

concrete, practical information for understanding and mixing<br />

color. Students will learn about color harmony, how white<br />

paint changes color mixtures, what happens to colors in the<br />

mid-tone range, the tonal relationship of color, why doing the<br />

charts make it easier to replicate colors from life, practice<br />

self-control and more. We will start with group questions and<br />

discussion about basic color information, then we will dive in<br />

to making the color charts.<br />

Perfecting the Foundations of Painting<br />

ABILITY: INTERMEDIATE<br />

This continuing course for intermediate students perfects<br />

skills which are built on the foundations of painting. A more<br />

advanced theory of drawing, composition, color theory,<br />

anatomy and art history will be covered. The painter will develop<br />

a working knowledge necessary for good drawing. Class will<br />

work from a model at varying times, and will work on a variety<br />

of subject matters including still life, figurative, landscapes,<br />

and floral. Oil, acrylic and watercolor mediums are welcome.<br />

Demonstrations will be conducted in oil and watercolor.<br />

An Introduction to the<br />

In this introductory course, you will focus on the foundations of<br />

painting, beginning with drawing and moving to composition,<br />

color theory, anatomy and art history. Subject matter will<br />

include working from a live model, a variety of still life,<br />

figurative, landscapes, floral and other study references. Oil,<br />

acrylic and watercolor mediums are welcome. Demonstrations<br />

will be conducted in oil and watercolor.<br />

Studio Landscape<br />

Master the skills specific to studio landscape painting.<br />

Materials are presented in a way to help the beginner get<br />

started as well as helping the experienced artist take their<br />

work to the next level. Each month begins with an entire class<br />

devoted to demonstration in either pastel or oil. There will<br />

be brief presentation or illustration covering topics such as<br />

design, principles of color, handling material, color harmony,<br />

linear perspective, among others. In this course, you will<br />

learn how to create a mood or feeling in your work, with lots<br />

of useful ideas, methods and techniques you can build on.<br />

The class ends with a critique of work completed that day.<br />

Exercises for the Plein Air Artist<br />

Learn useful observations and principles applicable to both<br />

plein air and studio painting. We will cover how to include<br />

people and animals in plein air paintings. Students will work on<br />

a series of drawings—practicing how to quickly paint people,<br />

horses, or other animals from their imagination or memory.<br />

On the last day of the class, students will work on a one and<br />

a half hour studio landscape painting, which will include<br />

people or animals.<br />

Plein Air Painting<br />

on location). Materials and techniques are presented in a<br />

way to help the beginner get started as well as helping the<br />

experienced artist take their work to the next level. Each<br />

month begins with a entire class devoted to demonstration<br />

in either pastel or oil. Topics covered in the class include:<br />

Finding good plein air subject matter; materials, techniques,<br />

and tools for painting outside; Principles of design and color;<br />

Overcoming the changing light and weather conditions; and<br />

completing painting in a limited period of time. The class ends<br />

with a critique of work done that day. Lots of useful ideas,<br />

methods and techniques you can build on.<br />
