Whimsical Birdhouses<br />

Students will create a series of playful birdhouses and gnome<br />

houses, perfect for your spring creatures this year. In part<br />

one, we will explore a variety of hand-building and texturing<br />

techniques to create our playful houses. Students will return<br />

for part two to learn playful glazing techniques and complete<br />

their bisque fired work made in part one.<br />

SPECIAL NOTE: Students work made during this workshop will<br />

be fired following the workshop. You will be notified when to<br />

pick up your glazed pieces.<br />

Assemblage Sculpture<br />

Learn to accumulate, analyze, organize and combine found<br />

and created objects and materials into successful assemblage<br />

sculptures. With an emphasis on joining methods and basic<br />

tools, learn to create a unique and unified sculpture from<br />

disparate parts.<br />

Handbuilding and Ceramic Sculpture<br />

Learn pinch, coil and slab building techniques in clay to create<br />

your artistic vision of finished sculpture or functional pottery.<br />

Demonstrations on ceramic techniques, tool modification<br />

and fabrication will be explored. Individual guidance will help<br />

encourage the development of good studio practices.<br />

Introducing Narrative to the<br />

Ceramic Surface<br />

Try another option for finishing your ceramic pieces and applying<br />

new ideas to your work. In this workshop, we will add to what<br />

you've learned about surface decoration by creative illustrative<br />

ceramic tiles utilizing carving, inlay, and transfer techniques. Wet<br />

clay tiles will be supplied for you to work on and will be bisque<br />

fired after the workshop for you to use as a reference.<br />

Wheel Throwing Fundamentals<br />

JACK HEIMERMAN<br />

ABILITY: BEGINNER<br />

If you want to try the potter's wheel for the first time, or you<br />

are new to clay and/or haven't worked in the <strong>ASLD</strong> ceramics<br />

studio, this workshop is a prerequisite for enrolling in beginning<br />

and intermediate wheel classes. This introductory workshop<br />

will focus on basic wheel techniques and introduce you to<br />

studio practices and <strong>ASLD</strong> ceramics studio policies. The<br />

first few sessions will focus on building a solid framework<br />

of skills including centering, pulling up clay, and trimming. In<br />

the final sessions you will learn to create cylinders to assist<br />

you in getting the feel of clay and the wheel. The goal of this<br />

workshop is to provide you with the fundamentals to make<br />

a successful transition into your next wheel class. Clay is<br />

included in this workshop.<br />
