Jon Williams
- an original
NZ Masters Games
- a family event
Jon Williams is a true
expert when it comes
to the New Zealand
Masters Games.
Having competed in
the first Masters Games
almost 30 years ago, he
has been coming back ever
since.
Having competed in
either table tennis and/
or rock ‘n’ roll at every
Whanganui based Masters
Games, Jon last competed
with his wife Christine in
2017.
He enters the New Zealand
Masters Games each
year because he loves the
camaraderie, the village
atmosphere, and most of
all the dancing.
“I love dancing and if I
can get through a routine
without any mistakes, I
am more than happy,” he
says. “Receiving a medal is
just an added bonus.”
Jon and his Rock ‘n’
Roll friends aim to get to
the village between three
and five times throughout
the week and love it
when Rock n Roll music is
played.
For 2019, Jon has entered
both Rock ‘n’ Roll
and Table Tennis. He
plans to keep entering
each year as long as he is
physically able.
When Whanganui’s
Sue Watson
pondered
the ideal Christmas presents
for her family, entries
to the 2019 Downer New
Zealand Masters Games
seemed like the ideal solution.
Sue has entered her
three children, along with
their partners, in a variety
of events.
“At first I thought I
could enter them all in the
5km walk, however two
of them are too young, so
they have been entered in
track events,” says Sue.
“I just thought the kids
are all involved in sport in
some capacity, and they
are now of an appropriate
age, so what better way to
bring everyone together.”
Sue and partner Roger’s
three children Tim,
Penny and Simon are
thrilled with their gifts
and all are considering entering
further events at the
games.
“There is talk of taking
part in the weightlifting as
we have a couple of cross
fitters in the group, or
even the swimming,” says
Sue.
As for Sue and Roger,
they will be on babysitting
duty looking after their six
grandchildren while supporting
from the sidelines.
“We think the Masters
Games is a fantastic event
for Whanganui, we have
always got behind it in the
past and now want to encourage
the next generation
to give it a go.”
The Games attract
competitors from all
around New Zealand,
and internationally, competing
at Masters level.
There are no qualifying
standards, apart from the
age limit for each sport,
and athletes in their 80s
and 90s are just as likely
to be lining up as those in
their 30s and 40s. The focus
is on participation and
friendship, and the social
programme is just as important
as the sport.
