Editor’s word
On this month’s cover, couple John and Roi Speed are
a great example of age being no barrier to finding a
fresh interest or sport - and achieving success.

The pair took up
track cycling after
attending an open
day at the then-new Avantidrome
facility in Cambridge.
Having gone along out
of curiosity, keen to see
inside the building which
had been the topic of
much public conversation
- they somehow ended up
agreeing to participate in a
‘Have-A-Go’ day.
Fast forward a couple
of years and John and Roi
have both competed at national
and world masters’
events, and Roi recently
set a new WORLD hour
record for women aged
70-75.
That is an astonishing
achievement at any age,
but even more remarkable
given the fact Roi only
tried cycling for the first
time a few years ago.
Sharing stories like this
is a reminder to be open
to new experiences and
opportunities, even those
which may seem highly
unlikely.
For Roi and John, the
success they’ve attained is
secondary to new friendships
made and the social
side of being involved in a
sport.
Discovering a fresh interest
opens many doors,
and as 2018 fast approaches
its end, it is timely to
give some thought to making
plans for 2019. As an
organisation, Grey Power
strongly promotes the importance
of community
and inclusion, and getting
involved in a new interest
or sport is a simple way to
discover a new pocket of
like-minded people.
The New Zealand Masters
Games in February
2019 offers another reason
to rediscover an old sport
or try your hand at something
new. The event has a
strong focus on participation
and includes a mobility
scooter race for the first
time this year, thanks to
the efforts of Grey Power
member Jack Ager (read
our full story on page 12).
With Christmas fast
approaching, we’ve put
together some great competitions
inside with the
chance to win some goodies
to enjoy on Christmas
Day.
