The Selwyn-Waihora Zone Committee is wanting to get a “better picture” of the whole catchment beyond the three main streams – Silver Stream, McGraths and Snake Creek. The meeting will be held at the Springston Hall from 7-8.30pm. CREATIVE COMMUNITIES Applications close on Friday for Creative Communities funding. Funding is available to groups or individuals with communitybased creative projects that promote arts or culture in Selwyn. If you need funding for your creative project, ensure you apply by 5pm Friday. Visit selwyn.govt.nz/ artsfunding for more information and to apply. CANTASTIC TREE Cans of food are being collected at district council libraries to help people in need. Donations can be placed on the Cantastic Tree at each library until December 19. They must be in cans with original label, non-perishable and within the best before date. Donations will be given to Ellesmere Food Bank Trust which covers all of Selwyn. Stadium costs discussions wanted Mixed views from Selwyn residents • By Emily O’Connell A PROPOSAL for Selwyn ratepayers to contribute towards the operating costs of Christchurch’s planned sports and events area has received a mixed reaction. Committee for Canterbury has suggested councils in the region make a contribution to the stadium. The committee, which is not directly involved with the stadium development, wants to start a Gary Doyle discussion on how costs above its revenue could be covered. The Crown and Christchurch City Council have already committed $473 million to the project, which is hoped to be built within five years. Weedons Residents’ Association secretary Gary Doyle believes Selwyn residents shouldn’t contribute as they’ve got their own facilities to “take care of.” “People from Ashburton, Waimakariri, Hurunui, Christchurch, they all come and use our facilities but they don’t contribute, we don’t expect them to. Why should we be contributing to the ones [facilities] in there?” he said. Mr Doyle said Christchurch will see the benefits of the stadium in its hotels, motels, cafes and bars so “they should be paying for it.” His views were backed by Hororata Citizens Committee chairwoman Margaret Cross, who didn’t think Selwyn residents should be paying for something in Christchurch. “They [Christchurch] wouldn’t pay for anything we have in our district, I wouldn’t think. That’s a bit cheeky,” she said. However, Dunsandel Community Committee chairman Nigel Barnett doesn’t think “anybody should be putting money into the operating costs” of the stadium. “To me, the whole purpose of building a stadium is to make it a multi-purpose thing and the running costs should be borne by the actual users. So that’s a bridge too far at this stage,” he said. Tai Tapu Community Association chairman Gerald Carter said his personal view was that Selwyn residents should be contributing to the stadium as they will benefit also. “In theory, Waimakariri FORK OUT: An idea for Selwyn residents to contribute to the operating costs of Christchurch’s stadium has received mixed reviews from people living in the district. and Selwyn should amalgamate with Christchurch. Well parts of Selwyn, Selwyn’s a huge district of course and some of it may not be appropriate,” he said. Rolleston Residents’ Association chairwoman Leonie MacLachlan said she couldn’t make a comment as she didn’t know enough about the proposal. Mayor Sam Broughton said without seeing a business case and understanding the operating model, it was difficult to speculate on who should contribute to the operating costs. “I would hope that a proper operational model would support itself,” he said. Regenerate Christchurch is responsible for developing the regeneration plan for the Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor and has considered thousands of ideas from the community, as well as surveys, technical reports and studies. Environment Canterbury, along with the district council, are creating new recreational facilities. The Willows, at the end of Thompsons Rd, off Old West Coast Rd, is being developed for non-motorised activities. There are plans for a dedicated motorhome camping area with the New Zealand Motor Caravan Association. In turn, Weedons Forest will be available for a range of off-road activities, including trail biking. Trail bike riders will have a dedicated area at the Weedons Ross Rd end of the park which will link up with 28km of further trails downstream in Miners Forest to Haul Rd. People can also camp west of Diversion Rd on the north bank. The parks will remain open and construction will be ongoing during the summer. Woods asked people to be mindful of that. “Signage will be in place and we want everyone to take the time to read the information available to them,” Mr Woods said.
