38 Wednesday November 28 2018 Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi MY PRIDE AND JOY SELWYN TIMES Selwyn motor event supports rescue helicopter In 2017, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter undertook 693 rescue missions across Canterbury, 76 of these in Selwyn. In 2016 the numbers were a little lower at 639 and 74 respectively. By the end of October this year, 72 rescue missions had already been undertaken in the district, while 13 air rescues occurred across Canterbury and the West Coast over Labour weekend. Motor vehicle, mountain biking, hiking, workplace and water related accidents all contribute to these numbers as does medical emergencies. Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue Trust chief executive, Christine Prince says the number of rescues increases by approximately 10% each year, with over 12,000 successful missions having occurred since the start of the rescue helicopter operation in 1989. The New Zealand Flying Doctors service operates on a national basis with planes based in Christchurch and Nelson. The service is effectively a mobile Intensive Care Unit, transferring patients between hospitals such as to the Burwood Spinal Unit. This too is a busy service with close to 1,500 missions completed in the last 12 months. The Westpac Rescue Helicopter recently moved to a new purpose-built emergency centre on Grays Road by Christchurch Airport. A reserve rescue helicopter and the New Zealand Flying Doctors are also based there. GCH Aviation holds the contract for air rescue across Canterbury, Nelson, Marlborough and the West Coast; working in partnership with Heli Otago as HEMS, to carry out all South Island rescues. Currently, there is a pilot, crewman and an intensive paramedic on the Westpac Rescue Helicopter. Staffing numbers will increase now the latest contract for the service is in place. Future plans include the introduction of a new helicopter in Christchurch and increased clinical support, leading to improved patient care. The Flying Doctors and Rescue Helicopters are only partly government funded. The successful operation of the rescue service across the Canterbury and West Coast regions requires another $4million, and another $2.5million to support the Flying Doctors. Christine Prince says fundraising efforts like last weekend’s Jones Road Auto Selwyn Motor Fest and Fun Day at Rolleston go a long way to helping achieve this goal. “It’s wonderful when people come to us and say they have a community initiative to raise funds for the air rescue service. It helps save lives,” says Christine.
