Energy waste solutions sought
LINCOLN Envirotown has
hosted a meeting for businesses
interested in a Selwyn
Responsible Business Network
in Rolleston.
Businesses were invited to a
social occasion and treated to
two presentations which examined
concepts of sustainable
practices relating to power use
and waste management.
Many of the ideas discussed
looked at the cost-cutting possibilities
that result from adopting
more sustainable practices,
while others emphasised general
environmental concerns.
Energy Efficiency and Conservation
Authority programme
partnership manager Richard
Briggs surprised the audience
with the statistic that businesses
typically waste up to 20 per cent
of the energy they use.
Most solutions to this problem
are low or no cost solutions
which look to making current
processes more efficient before
looking at any replacement of
infrastructure.
Mr Briggs strongly suggested
businesses should start looking
at the possibilities of making
savings by undertaking an
energy audit to really assess how
much power is being used and
where. Details of funding bodies
which could help with longterm
solutions were also shared.
The second presentation
by district council water and
recycling manager Andrew
Boyd gave some insight into
the recycling situation around
the world and its impact on
Selwyn.
He explained how the old
model of using resources to
produce the things we need and
then discarding them as waste,
cannot be sustained.
The concept of the circular
economy whereby resources
are used in production and
then reused was examined
with numerous examples cited.
Mr Boyd also advised on good
recycling habits and gave an
insight into the difficulties of
the processes.
Lincoln Envirotown would
like to thank the district council
for supporting the initiative.
Bell returned to Springston church
• By Emily O’Connell
THE MISSING church bell
from St Mary’s in Springston
has been found.
Spokesman Neville Benny
said a man found the 150-yearold
cast iron bell on the banks
of the Waimakariri River about
a month ago while jetboating.
A relative of the man then
read about the bell two weeks
later in Selwyn Times and let the
finder know, who then got in
touch with the church.
Mr Benny said the bell, which
went missing sometime between
late September and early
October, has been burnt and
will need “cleaning up” before it
is put back in its place.
Mr Benny is unsure what
exactly happened to the bell but
said whoever stole it may have
thought it was brass and could
have been trying to “melt it
down.”
BACKYARD CRITTERS
Mike Bowie is an ecologist
who specialises in
entomology (insects and
other invertebrates). Each
week he introduces a
new species found in his
backyard at Lincoln. His
column
aims to
raise public
awareness
of
biodiversity,
the
variety of
living things around us.
WOLF SPIDERS are
one the most numerous
invertebrate predators in many
environments, but particularly
in grasslands where they are
viewed as being beneficial.
As many as 27 species of wolf
spiders or lycosidae are known
in New Zealand.
The most common New
Zealand species found, usually
in modified grasslands such as
pastures, gardens and lawns, is
Anoteropsis hilaris.
Wolf spiders are active hunters
CREEPY CRAWLY:
Anoteropsis hilaris is the
most common New Zealand
species of wolf spiders. They
are usually found in modified
grasslands such as pastures,
gardens and lawns.
They are 8-12mm in length,
dark brown in colour with pale
yellow through the middle of
their body.
This species live in a small
burrow, do not build webs, and
females can often be observed
carrying a white egg sac around
with them.
With good eyesight they are
active hunters by day, preying
on a range of species, sometimes
larger than themselves.
This spider is commonly parasitised
by a spider wasp which
paralyses the spider and lays a
single egg in it, which develops
inside its body until death.
