Fire rages, homes at risk
A few good reasons why Rolleston
Rolleston has made it
onto the S**t Towns of
New Zealand Facebook
page. And as expected, it
hasn’t gone down well with
people who live there. Emily
Naomi Hooft
O’Connell reports
A SENSE of community,
affordable land and a place that
doesn’t have “everything” – these
are just a few things Rolleston
residents love about their town.
The comments comes after
the S**t Towns of New Zealand
Facebook page profiled Rolleston
last week in
a post that
received more
than 2000
comments.
“Plonked
on the
appropriatelynamed
Canterbury
Plains, Rolleston
is a mind-numbingly featureless
town, completely lacking in
beaches, hills, rivers, bush, jobs,
or things to do – the missionary
position of towns,” it read.
Selwyn Times visited Rolleston
on Thursday to see what
residents really thought about
their town and what they made
of the Facebook post.
Naomi Hooft disagreed with
the post, saying the town has “a
lot going” for it and she would
definitely refer to it as
“the town of the future.”
“We’ve got a huge
amount of community.
It’s not just about children
and soccer mums – you
can call that what you
want, but basically what
it is is a community,” she
said.
The review poked fun
at Rolleston’s increasing
population, saying “despite
Marijke
Etwell
decades of stagnation, Rolleston’s
population has boomed since
2011, when it became New
Zealand’s pre-eminent
post-earthquake refugee
camp.”
One of the “refugees”
is Marijke Etwell, who
moved to Rolleston three
years ago because of the
affordable land prices.
She found the review
“hilarious.”
“I like it here, I like the
small town . . . I seem to
be happy at work, my husband’s
of New
review of
their town.
happy at work, my daughter’s
happy at school and there’s so
much happening,” Mrs Etwell
said.
When asked
what she
thought of the
post, Rolleston
resident Ann
Mason said it
was “s**t, quite
frankly.”
Although she Ann Mason
didn’t “go out a
lot,” she liked the family aspect
of the town.
Rolleston
resident
Robyn
McKenzie
“totally”
disagreed with
the post, saying
the district
council has
“really good
foresight” in
providing facilities for
the community. “I just think this
is a great town to live in,” she
said.
Although she
found the post
“quite harsh,”
Logan Pollock
admitted there is
not a lot to do in
the “beautiful”
town. “It’s
quite nice to
have somewhere
where there isn’t everything to
do,” she said.
Rolleston
resident
JP Xitlec said
Rolleston is
“nice” but he
does agree with
some of the
points made in
the post.
