NEWS December
2018
As this year closes we all reflect on things we are thankful for, losses, gains and
hopefully lessons learned. As we digest our extraordinary lives take time to relish
the little things. Things that scared you now don’t and have become easier like
jumping without stirrups, struggling with leg yields, sitting the medium trot without
losing a kidney. Whatever it may be let’s ride outside the lines in 2019...
May next year be the best one yet
Jan
Wishing you a
Merry Christmas
and Happy Holidays

November FRC Education Seminar
Dr. Emilie Setlakwe, DVM, an internal medicine specialist at Tryon Equine Hospital, presented
"Central America EQUID Veterinary work"
Dr. Emilie shared her experiences from when she traveled to Nicaragua with World Vets. The
World Vets mission is to improve the health and well being of animals worldwide.
She went to Nicaragua as one of 5 vets on a team of 15 people. They provided vet services to
impoverished horses, donkeys and livestock. Horses and donkeys are part of the daily live in
Nicaragua. They are used as primary transportation, taxis, for tourism and to work in the
fields. Each day they would set up makeshift clinics in different rural regions.
They provided services such as castration, dental, deworming, vaccinations and wound repair.
This is a poverty stricken area and while she was there she encountered bats in her room, an
earthquake and many stray cats and dogs. There is a high rabies rate as vaccinations are very
hard to get into the country. Vaccinations are usually confiscated at the border.
On the first clinic day the team saw over 300 horses. she was in charge of castrations. She
performed over 40 castrations in one day! Locals are unable to perform their own castrations
and it is important that stallions are gelded due to them fighting and becoming unmanageable.
Other issues treated were tick paralysis on ears, wounds from ill fitting tack, accidental
machete injuries and hoof care. The locals are unable to afford steel shoes so many of the
horses were shod with old tires. Part of the team included farriers who spent time educating
proper trimming and shoeing techniques.
On Emile's days off she worked in a local small animal clinic spaying and neutering cats and
dogs. She shared many pictures from her trip and encouraged anyone who was interested to
volunteer with this organization.
Emile's charity of choice was Red Bell Run. Mary Adams from Red Bell Run shared her story.
She grew up in a family heavily involved with rescues. When she moved from Florida to North
Carolina she decided to create a rescue that would focus on cases that other rescues could
not support. Red Bell Run is a "rescue of last resort" that takes in donkeys and horses from
other 501(c)3 organizations and law enforcement agencies. They have 120 animals on 200
acres and a vineyard.
Barbara Claussen shared her history with donkeys. She has rescued over 120 donkeys over
the last 20 years! She stressed the importance of learning the difference between horses and
donkeys. They are not flight animals so when they become afraid of something they freeze
instead of running. This has helped them survive in the wild where they would be unable to
outrun some predators.

Donkey 101 and Myth Busters:
1)Donkeys are not prone to laminitis:
Reality: It’s the opposite; donkeys are very prone to laminitis due to being desert animals.
2)Donkeys don’t feel pain because they are so stoic:
Reality: Donkeys have a lower pain threshold then horses.
3)Donkeys are not social:
Reality: The opposite is true! donkeys are very social and need companionship if at all possible
with another donkey. They often bond for life and can die if they’re separated from their
partner.
4)Donkeys don’t need hoof care:
Reality: Donkeys need a regular trim, just like horses, every 6 to 8 weeks by a farrier that
studied donkey hoof. Their hoofs and trim are very different that horses. They are prone to
white line disease and thrush, since their natural environment is dry and rocky.
5)Donkeys don’t need a shelter, and they can be kept outdoors with cattle:
Reality: Since they originally lived in a dry climate, they have to have a shelter available with
wind and rain protection at all time. They don’t have any repellent against rain (no hair raising
for heat retention and fat as a repellent) and it penetrates to the skin in short order. They are
not like horses! Donkeys long ears are designed to dissipate heat! Donkeys develop pneumonia
when they get cold and wet.
6)Donkeys wear their teeth down by themselves:
Reality: Donkeys need regular teeth floating just like horses. A yearly checkup by an equine
dentist is a must. NEVER let the dentist flush the mouth after the float, it can be deadly!
7)Pasture turnout is just fine for donkeys:
Reality: The sugar in the grass particularly in this area is very difficult for donkeys. They should
have a large dry lot or even better a paddock paradise to manage their weight and prevent
founder during times of high sugar content in the grass. http://www.safergrass.org/
8)Just put donkeys on a diet when they are too fat:
Reality: Donkeys need to lose weight very slowly. They can develop Hyperlipemia with a
mortality rate of 80%.
FRC Annual Gala
The Foothills Riding Club will have their annual gala at Spiegel Farm in
Campobello on Saturday 12 January 2019. This exciting event will
feature fabulous food and drinks, year end show awards, volunteer
awards, raffle prizes, a silent auction, and music/ dancing!
Visit www.foothillsridingclub.org for more details as they become
available.
FRC Community Outreach
Over the last 12 months the Foothills Riding Club has sponsored two roadside
cleanups, has held eight educational seminars, donating $800 in honorariums
with additional money raised for numerous local charities. At the last annual
meeting, the Foothills Riding Club collected 30 bags of clothing for the Safe
Harbor Battered Women’s shelter in Greenville, SC. In 2019 the FRC also
donated $500 to local rider Alison Leclerc and, as voted by members attending
the Annual Meeting, $1000 each to Steps for Hope Women's Shelter, Columbus,
NC and Big Oaks Horse Rescue Farm, Greenwood, SC. In July, the FRC
donated $1000 to FENCE from the July benefit show. Additionally, the FRC
donated gravel and excavation to improve drainage around the office at Harmon
Field. Our club continues to support local charities for both animals and
humans.

The Foothills Riding Club’s Annual Meeting on 11/14/18 featured great food, fellowship and
speakers. One big highlight of the evening was the clothing drive, which yielded a large donation to
Safe Harbor, whose mission is to “provide a continuum of services for victims of domestic violence
and their children.” The clothes will be sold in the Safe Harbor Resale Shop, where proceeds help
fund their programs and services. The photo does not do the volume of donations justice, as there are
giant black bags in the back!
The FRC is thankful to all the members who donated, especially Alice Dobbs, who brought the largest
donation! This is just another example of the wonderful FRC members coming together to help the
community. Thank you to all who donated!

FRC Scholarship Reminder
One of the perks of being an FRC member, is that you are eligible to apply for one of the four
$250 Member Scholarships that we award each year. Scholarships can be used in a variety of
ways. In the past, they have been used for riders to defer the cost of going to events such as
championship competitions, rare educational opportunities, or clinics applicable to your
discipline. There are only a few requirements to be considered for a scholarship. You must be
a member at the time of your application, and you also must be willing to share the knowledge
you gained through your scholarship experience with the club in some way (ideas must be
approved by the scholarship committee). This could be a short presentation at one of our
seminars, info table or infographic at shows, newsletter report, etc.
Want to apply for a scholarship, but not sure if your endeavor would be approved- don’t worry!
The application is short, sweet and to the point. If there happens to be an influx of applicants
at any deadline, volunteer service to the FRC in the current and preceding membership year
will be considered when awarding scholarships. Application deadlines are April 1 st , July 1 st ,
October 1 st , and January 1 st depending on the date of the event. Any member is eligible to
apply!
FRC is partnering with WNC Hunter Pace Series again for a Hunter Pace in
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Foothills Riding Club would like to welcome you to our second annual
hunter pace! Trails are mainly wooded trails, with some fields, and some steep
grades. Most trails are wide and open, with some bridge crossings, a short time on
a road, and one water crossing. Many NEW JUMPS will be on course for 2019!! All
jumps are optional.
Parking will be very limited and we encourage you to trailer-carpool when
possible! Enter at main gate and PLEASE follow parking attendant volunteers to
assist with maximizing our capacity for the day.
PLEASE OBSERVE COURTEOUS TRAIL ETIQUETTE. When passing, please walk
when approaching and departing a slower group, and give adequate distance
before resuming a faster pace. Communication is KEY! Many people bring young
or green horses that can get rattled by the commotion and excitement, and we
wish all riders to have pleasant rides, no matter the pace at which they ride.
