Debate Festival
18 July 2018
The English
Language
Department
organised
the Debate Fest
with the aim of
developing students’
communicative and
critical thinking skills.
All the Secondary
3 Express classes
conducted their intraclass
debate sessions
as part of their English
Language curriculum
in Term 2.
The winning team from
each class then had
preliminary rounds to
determine the two best
teams for the finals.
They debated over the
following two motions:
1) Sports should be an
examinable subject.
2) Single-sex schools
should be abolished.
On 18 July 2018, Sec
3E1 (proposition) and
Sec 3E2 (opposition)
met in the grand finals
with the motion "Our
success is dependent
on our appearance
in today's world".
Secondary 3E2
emerged the winner.
It was an exciting and
fruitful Debate Fest for
all involved.
Literature
Festival
2018
21 July 2018
The Literature Unit took part in the
National Schools Literature Festival
(NSLF) held at Paya Lebar Methodist
Girls School for the first time this year.
This event held annually aims to motivate
students to deeply enjoy and celebrate
Literature. 2018 marks its 14th year running and
saw 103 secondary schools participating in six
main events. Our Secondary 1 to 3 students took
part in three of the events – Book Parade, Book
Trailer and Set Text Debate.
From the literature texts that they have studied
over the course of the year, our students had to
create dioramas, act out significant scenes to
create an interesting trailer and debate against
another school on a given motion!
Both our students and teachers were visually
treated to a variety of literature works from all
the participating schools. It was truly an eyeopening
experience!
National Reading
Movement 2018
24 July 2018
The National
Library
Board (NLB)
invited all
schools in Singapore
to participate in the
National Reading
Movement in 2018.
For every ten students
and teachers who
read a novel for fifteen
minutes, NLB pledged
to donate one novel
from their libraries to
selected beneficiaries.
Of course, without
hesitation, both
staff and students
at Beatty jumped at
the opportunity to
collaborate with NLB
for such a worthwhile
cause! This initiative
also allowed us to
tap on this platform
to achieve the
Department’s reading
programme’s aim of
inculcating a passion
for reading in our
students and staff.
On 24 July, a total
of 1176 participants
indulged in reading a
novel for half an hour.
The jovial expressions
of our happy readers
showed how glad they
were to know that they
had done their part for
charity even in a small
way.
Hari Raya
Gathering 2018
29 June 2018
The Malay Language Unit
held a gathering for
all Muslim students in
conjunction with Hari Raya
Aidilfitri this year. It was a simple
yet fun event. The objective of
this event was to have a fun-filled
Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration for
the students, as well as to enrich
them with knowledge on the Malay
customs, culture and values. They
were fruitfully engaged in a series
of fun games and quizzes, such as
‘Guess the Hari Raya Song Lyrics’,
‘Guess the Malay Traditional Kuih’
and ‘Traditional Samping Folding’.
The celebration ended with a
scrumptious buffet spread that
included traditional Raya favourites
such as briyani, lodeh and an
assortment of Hari Raya cakes and
cookies. The students and teachers
enjoyed themselves tremendously
and this gathering will definitely be
an event that we look forward to
every year!
LUMBUBA 2018
14 July 2018
Four of our
Secondary 1
Express Malay
Language
students took part
in a National Malay
Language Amazing
Race competition
named LUMBUBA
2018 in mid-July. The
competition that was
held on a Saturday
at Jurong Point
Shopping Mall was
jointly organised by
Bukit Batok MAEC and
the Malay Language
Learning and
National Malay Language
Amazing Race competition named
LUMBUBA 2018
Promotion Committee
(MLLPC). Competing
against other schools,
the students had to
complete a given
task at 15 different
stations located in
the mall in the fastest
time possible. The
tasks tested students’
knowledge of the
Malay culture and
language. Even though
our students did not
emerge winners,
they had a fun-filled
day and gained a
lot of knowledge,
especially about their
own culture. Through
this competition, the
students also had
the opportunity to
exercise tolerance,
resilience, endurance
and teamwork as they
completed each given
task.
Read!Fest 2018,
organised by the
National Library
Board (NLB) is an
annual literary festival which
celebrates the joy of reading.
In conjunction with the literary
festival, our Tamil students
from Secondary 1 took part in
an exciting activity titled “Who
Killed Leena?”, modelled after
the escape room game format.
This was a recreation of an
excerpt from a murder mystery
novel written by Sujatha, one
of the most popular authors of
Tamil contemporary literature.
The students engaged in a
compelling journey within the
escape room, where interesting
puzzles and codes had to be
cracked to identify Leena’s
murderer within a stipulated
time. For a full hour, students
were immersed in thrilling
activities and erupted in
screams as they solved the
mystery.
This experience provided
a gateway for students to
discover and expand their
horizons in contemporary Tamil
literature and instilled a strong
interest in reading. As a reward
for their active participation, the
students received a personal
guided tour around NLB by the
organising Chairperson of the
Read!Fest (Tamil)!
Sec 3 Financial
Literacy Workshop
22 October 2018
Our Secondary three
students went through a
half-day financial literacy
workshop which taught
them basic concepts of net worth,
assets, liabilities, investments and
other concepts related to finance.
The workshop equipped them
with the useful skills of managing
their money. Through playing
the Pinnacle Life Challenge and
taking part in an exciting “real-life”
auction, the students experienced
first-hand how the effective
management of finances involves
differentiating needs from wants,
adopting the habit of saving early
in life, delaying instant gratification,
exercising smart spending, reducing
debt and liabilities, and investing
to grow their money. Together with
the debrief sessions conducted at
various junctures of the workshop,
the trainers helped to consolidate
the lessons learnt at each stage.
The students had an interactive
and fun time learning through play,
and picked up useful concepts that
will enable them to make sound
financial decisions in the future.
Historical Investigation
Humanities Experientia
Learning 2018
The humanities are learnt through a wide
range of skills. It remains a challenge,
though, for our students to demonstrate
those skills beyond the subjects.
Humanities education through experiential
learning provides important opportunities for
students and enhances their development as
independent individuals who make their own
decisions. The benefits that such learning can
provide are evident through the historical (HI)
and geographical investigation (GI) programme
for our students. The skills the students draw
upon to complete these projects include
research, critical thinking, collaboration, editing,
writing, data and source analysis, presentation,
and time management. In other words, this
programme that runs through a course of 4
years for Geography and 2 years for History help
students to hone and demonstrate these core
skills in a practical and authentic setting.
The competition component of the
programme involved student teams
using MDF (Medium Density Fibre)
timber strips and boards, glue
and cotton strings to design and
fabricate models of earthquakeresistant
buildings. Models were
then tested on the Earthquake
Simulator to determine the winners
according to their efficiency ratios.
Beatty Secondary School sent in a
team of 4 students (Nur Maisarah
Bte Abdul Malek, Lim Ruey Hsuen,
Jerod Lim Yao Wei, from 3E3, as
well as Lim Jun Long Gerome from
3E4). The team spent many hours
refining their design and tested it in
different configurations. In the end,
the structure that they designed
clinched the 14th position among
the 42 teams that participated
in this international competition.
They were awarded the Quake-
APPLIED LEARNING
PROGRAMME (ALP)
Beattyians Think. Create. Innovate
DEAR DIARY,
I am about to embark on a new journey to learn
basic coding and computer science concepts
with my classmates. I am feeling so excited to
see what lies ahead!
In our ALP journey, my classmates and I discover
the endless possibilities of micro:bit — a tiny
handheld programmable computer. Every ALP
lesson is filled with “a-ha!” moments!
We work in pairs and take ownership of our
learning. One major highlight: we embark on
a group project! We choose a target group of
people, seek their opinions on what their needs
are and brainstorm for solutions to best suit
their needs.
Next step: It’s time to create a prototype for the
chosen idea!
What’s the outcome, you ask? A shoe made with
cardboard, a plant watering system created with
disposable cups and a cardboard wardrobe with
paper “clothes” on hangers are just some of the
brilliant inventions!
The much-awaited day arrives. We eagerly set
up our booths to display the fruit of our labour
to our Principal, teachers and classmates.
Confidence courses through our veins as we
present our projects to the visitors who visit our
booths!
In ALP lessons, we surely gain new knowledge
beyond textbooks and the walls of a classroom.
This is what the joy of learning feels like.
Looking forward to the next ALP lesson!
Till next time…
