Subdiscipline <strong>of</strong> graphemics. Analogous to the relationship between phonetics <strong>and</strong><br />

phonology, graphetics is a prerequisite for graphemic investigations, to the degree that it<br />

studies different writing <strong>and</strong> transcription systems from individual, social, historical, or<br />

typographic aspects. Graphetics is used in palaeography (= deciphering historical writing<br />

systems), typography, instruction in reading <strong>and</strong> writing, as well as graphology (=the<br />

study <strong>of</strong> the relationship between h<strong>and</strong>writing <strong>and</strong> personal character traits) <strong>and</strong><br />

graphometry (=the identification <strong>of</strong> h<strong>and</strong>writing in criminal cases).<br />
