If you’re like me, the new year can
be as stressful as it is rejuvenating.
All around you, people are motivated.
Whether their goals are to
lose weight, conquer fears or travel
to exotic lands, everyone seems to
be making big plans for the future.
Every year, it’s a cacophony of “new
year, new me!” Funny how that chorus
fades by February.
Business Insider claims that 80
percent of people who make New
Year’s resolutions fail within six
weeks. On average, it takes 66 days
to form a new habit, just over two
months. Which means, all those resolution
resigners who strive to make
life changes fall short only a couple
of weeks before their new routines
become habit. Others, who vow to
try new things, save money or make
new friends, simply develop a convenient
form of amnesia about their
once-adamant goals.
If you’re one of those who typically
lets your resolutions fade, don’t be
ashamed. I’m right there with you.
Last year, I wrote a list of 10 things I
wanted to do during 2018. I utterly
failed. Not this year. This is my year.
This is our year. We can do this —
together!
Realistic Resolutions
As the saying goes: How do you
eat an elephant? One bite at a time.
I’m not saying to fulfill your goal
of trying new foods with a taste of
Dumbo. What that means is, when
faced with a seemingly impossible
or overwhelming task, the best way
to tackle it is by taking small steps.
New Year’s resolutions are no different.
The first step to setting and accomplishing
your goals for 2019 is
to set realistic resolutions.
Be honest with yourself, and give
yourself permission to adjust your
goals if your January enthusiam went
a little overboard. Instead of saying
you want to lose 30 pounds, aim for
10. If you start a new regimen too
eagerly, you’ll burn out just as quickly
as you began. Don’t try to change
your entire life overnight. Instead of
cutting out all junk food, choose one
meal each day to be your healthy
meal. Take the pressure off of yourself
to become an entirely different
person just because it’s the start of a
new year.
If you want to travel to exotic places,
try taking a solo day trip to a city
you’ve never been before. Florida has
some great one-day getaway destinations.
(See the June 21, 2018, digital issue
at www.southwestorlandobulletin/
digital-editions for ideas.) If you want
to make new friends, try joining an
app. Bumble isn’t just for dating.
It also has a feature to find friends.
Also, Meetup.com brings people together
who are interested in similar
activities.
Reward Good Behavior
Did you go to the gym today?
Did you order a side salad instead
of fries? Maybe you went to dinner
by yourself or bought a book or
signed up for a new class. Whatever
steps you took to follow through on
your resolution, reward yourself!
You deserve it. Change is hard.
If keeping resolutions was easy,
most of us wouldn’t give up in under
two months. So, no matter how
small your progress was, give yourself
points for sticking to your goal
and take a moment to congratulate
yourself.
We are often our own worst critics,
and how sad is that? Make sure the
voice in your head is a positive one.
Be your own cheerleader and make
sure you are rewarded for good behavior.
Just don’t allow your reward
to derail you from your resolution. If
you’re trying to eat healthier, maybe
don’t buy an entire chocolate cake
as a reward. One slice, however,
might be just the motivation you need
to keep going.
Allow Setbacks but Don’t Give Up!
Since we are all human and not
perfect, expect that you aren’t always
going to be on track for your
resolution. It’s OK to have setbacks.
It’s not OK to give up. If you find
Keep Your New Year’s Resolutions
Don’t Give Up When It Gets Hard
by Lauren Salinero
yourself slipping back into old habits
or avoiding taking those chances
you promised yourself you would,
don’t stress. Take a day off from
pushing yourself, so you don’t burn
out. Use that cheat day to its fullest,
but get right back on track the next
day.
When the new year’s motivation
starts to fade, remind yourself of your
goals. Look at where you started and
the progress you’ve already made,
no matter how great or small that
progress is. Keep moving forward to
reach the goals you set for yourself.
Don’t give up when it gets hard —
that’s the exact point between who
you were last year and who you
want to be this year.
I wish you the best of success
with your resolutions in 2019! Want
The Bridal Planner
Love is in the air, and the wedding
season is closer than you might
think. With the amount of work that
goes into planning the wedding of
your dreams, a little extra help goes
a long way. Whether you are newly
engaged or taking your time getting
to the alter, The Bridal Planner answers
bridal questions and provides
tips on getting through your wedding
without turning into a bridezilla.
Also included are local vendors
that can turn your special day from
ordinary to magical.
Wedding Planning 101
First comes the proposal then comes the
wedding planning. There are dozens of
decisions that need to be made before it’s
time to walk down the aisle, which can be
overwhelming for brides and grooms.
To help make it less stressful, these tips
from Macy’s can help couples through the
entire wedding-planning process, from
on-trend apparel and accessories for the
entire wedding party to all the essentials
to create a perfect registry.
• Dressing the ladies — When it
comes to bridesmaid dresses, the mixand-match
approach is trending in
popularity. Start by deciding on a color
palette, such as lilac, champagne and
petal pink. Then have each bridesmaid
choose her favorite style within that
range of hues. Bring it all together by
choosing a uniform look for makeup,
shoes and accessories.
There is no better time to thank the
bridesmaids and maid of honor than the
morning of the big day. A few thoughtful
gifts can go a long way, such as matching
robes, tumblers to stay hydrated throughout
the day, and cosmetic cases to stow
makeup essentials.
• Dressing the gents — Similar to bridesmaid
dresses, groomsmen attire can be
dependent on the venue and overall event
aesthetic. While a suit can fit the bill for a
country club wedding, a city affair may call
for the sleek finishes of a tux. Tuxedo accessories
like cuff links or bow ties make great
groomsmen gifts and are classic pieces
they can use time and time again.
• Creating the perfect registry — When
building a registry, it’s never too early to
start. People want to give gifts as soon as
they know a couple is engaged. Start by
taking inventory of what you already have,
what you need and what you want to upgrade.
It’s also recommended to update
the registry regularly, so there are enough
gifts to choose from, especially if there is an
2018
engagement party and bridal shower coming
up. To get started, some popular registry
items include stand mixers, craft beer glasses,
Dutch ovens, bath towels and vacuums.
Wedding Gifts for
Grooms: A Tradition
Brides Shouldn’t Ignore
The answer is: Yes, it’s expected.
But it’s also a chance for all you brides
out there to truly show you know that not
everything is about you on your wedding
day. That there really is another person
involved (that would be the groom) who
deserves a bit of recognition, too.
We’re talking wedding presents — specifically,
yours to your husband-to-be.
Tradition does, indeed, hold that both you
and he exchange gifts. And while it’s true
that some guys are initially shocked to learn
your engagement ring doesn’t also count as
a “present,” that’s no excuse for you to waver.
“Giving him something that’s just for him
will make him feel really special,” advises
BrideBox.com.
Here’s what you need to know now that
it’s prime time for weddings:
• When to exchange them. Etiquette
dictates that the hand-off occurs at one of
three times: the night before the wedding,
the morning of the ceremony, or right before
leaving on your honeymoon. Think
it’s bad luck to see the groom before the
nuptials? “Many couples choose to courier
gifts via bridesmaids or groomsmen just
before the ceremony,” says Brides.com.
• There’s a thin line between “romantic”
and “mushy.” Some of you may be
tempted to compile a “love notes” journal
of every bit of correspondence you’ve
ever sent your groom. Even assuming he’s
the type who wouldn’t consider that a bit
“over the top,” there’s always the chance
he might be left wondering, “OK, where’s
my real present?” — especially if his gift to
you is a serious piece of jewelry.
• The consensus choice. There’s a
reason a watch invariably makes everyone’s
short list: It’s the perfect statement
of who he is or aspires to be. (It’s
also a lot more impressive than a flask,
which for some reason also gets a
few votes). MarthaStewartWeddings.com
favors Baume & Mercier’s Clifton line
www.SouthwestOrlandoBulletin.com x January 24 — February 6, 2019 x 7
— as elegant as the original 1950s model
that inspired it — for the way it “easily
transitions from big day to every day.” Like
the Swiss watchmaker’s timelessly charming
(and affordably luxurious) Classima
line, it comes with a choice of straps, dial
faces and a variety of what’s known as
“small complications” that go way beyond
just telling the hour. You can shop them
at the Baume & Mercier e-boutique or by
calling 1-800-MERCIER, where free engraving
and wrapping are available.
• Fun fact. One writer at AskMen.com
says he’s “heard of women giving their
husbands watches in the ceremony instead
of a wedding ring.” If so, the answer is:
No, just like your engagement ring, that
wouldn’t also qualify as a wedding present.
Hiring
Your Wedding
Photographer
(NewsUSA)
Some moments are simply too important
to trust to a camera phone.
Your wedding will be one of the most
memorable times of your life, and no one
can capture it better than a professional
photographer. So how do you find the right
one?
As you interview photographers, ask
them these questions to help you determine
if he or she is the right photographer for you.
• Do you have a portfolio I can review?
Reviewing sample work allows you to see
the photographer’s style. Is it more formal or
candid? Look for images you can see yourself
in. Think of three words that describe you
and share those with your photographer.
• Will you create a detailed shot list?
This list will ensure no important photo is
missed during your wedding. You should
be able to create that list together. Take an
honest look at what images really matter
and fill your photographer in on situations
he or she might need to be aware of in
order to prevent awkward moments.
• Do you belong to any professional
associations, like the Professional
Photographers of America? You want to
work with the best, and PPA photographers
do more than just snap pictures.
They have the technical expertise and
artistry to make you look your best and
stories from real brides!
• Do you have backup equipment?
You’ve prepared contingency plans for
every other aspect of your wedding; your
photographer should, as well. A true professional
will always bring one or two
backup cameras, lenses, flashes, lighting
equipment, extra memory cards and
batteries.
• Do you have liability insurance?
Accidents happen, and if one of your
guests trips over your photographer’s light
stand, it’s good to know you both are protected.
Your reception venue may even
ask the photographer to submit a certificate
of liability ahead of time.
• What happens to my images after
the wedding? Will your images be
backed up to a hard drive or the cloud
once processed? How long will your photographer
keep the images afterward? If
you have any concerns about losing your
photos, knowing what the photographer
plans to do with your images after your
wedding is important.
• When will I get my photos? Printed
photos usually take several weeks, but
your photographer may be able to
get you some images for social media
quickly. Just ask.
You won’t be able to see everything
that happens at your wedding.
“Poof ” It’s All Gone
Lost Legacy
by: Kristen M. Jackson / Attorney
Like magic, first you see it,
think it’s real and “Poof ” It’s All
Gone. Law firms are often asked
the following question. If my mother or father remarries and dies before
their new spouse, what happens to any assets they acquired and owned
before they remarried? The answer lies in whether or not they commingled
their assets.
We spend our entire lives ignoring or not accepting the inevitable, that we
all die. The only thing that survives us is the legacy we leave behind consisting
of property, assets, photos, videos, writings, memorabilia, memories and more.
When a person remarries and then dies, often everything they worked for their
entire life may be lost to the surviving spouse simply because they failed to
prepare sufficient estate or legacy planning before their death.
Law firms see this scenario played out time, and time again. Regardless of
who may be hurt and because you failed to prepare any legacy planning before
your death, attorneys and courts must comply with probate law. Consider the
following example.
Sara owned a home, a car, bank accounts and investments. From her first
marriage to Ted, Sara had 4 children. After 21 years of marriage, Ted died in
an automobile accident. Two years later Sara married Bill. Bill had 3 children
from a previous marriage. Bill brought no tangible assets to the marriage but
he did bring a substantial income. During their marriage, Sara and Bill decided
to commingle their assets and earnings as couples typically do. Three years later
Sara suddenly fell ill and died.
Because Sara and Bill had commingled their assets as joint property,
which included all of the assets Sara had acquired before her marriage to
Bill, as the surviving spouse, Bill now owned everything. In Florida, all
assets jointly owned by a married couple pass to the surviving spouse.
Two years following Sara’s death, Bill died suddenly. Furthermore, Bill
had never established a close relationship with Sara’s 4 adult children from
her previous marriage.
You can predict the rest of this story. Because Bill and Sara failed
to prepare any estate planning whatsoever, Bill’s children from his first
marriage were required to file a probate for his estate. Sara’s children were
not included in Bill’s estate settlement nor had any entitlement to it. The
unfortunate result of Sara’s poor planning was that the entire family estate
legacy from her first marriage was lost.
Don’t face the same fate as Sara and her children. Obtain the advice
from an estate planning attorney and DO YOUR LEGACY PLANNING
NOW. Don’t leave your children with the same fate as Sara’s, that once you
Meet Amelia Hunter. Amelia is a master
of multitasking, people person, communicator
and dog lover. She is always on the
go. Amelia is originally from New York. She
moved here with her family in 1996.
“After we moved to Orlando, it took me
three years to get used to it,” she said.
She married a native Floridian who keeps
asking why she’s always in a rush.
Amelia Hunter is a Central Florida Re/
Max Properties S.W. agent who believes
her “New York personality” is what makes her
so successful. A Realtor for 14 years, she previously
was a bartender for corporate events
around Orlando.
“That’s when I realized I had a gift,” Amelia
said with certainty. “My gift was my ability to
listen to people’s needs, [and] help them calm
down and focus on what’s important.”
Amelia could have taken her gift and applied
it to many careers. However, she chose
real estate.
“I love the way people open up to me and
are able to communicate exactly what they
want,” she said.
A superb listener and keen observer, Amelia
can calm the emotions connected with buying
and selling homes and, at the same time, find
exactly what a client wants.
BUSINESS
Another reason Amelia chose to be a Realtor
is because she loves interior design, specifically
staging homes for showings. Flowers in a vase on
the counter and the smell of baked cookies in the
kitchen help to add feelings of connection and
comfort to a house that’s for sale, and Amelia
thinks of all the staging techniques.
Amelia does very little marketing of her services.
In fact, 95 percent of her clients are referrals.
She works with one client at a time and is always
available. Central Florida is her specialty with a
focus on Lake Nona and Windermere. Many
of Amelia’s clients are happy to learn she speaks
fluent Spanish.
“It helps when explaining things,” she said.
The skill also gives her an advantage through
the Re/Max International Global Network, which
services more than 90 countries.
Amelia sees her success as directly related to
her thirst for knowledge and lifelong learning, a
love for life and people, and a strong sense of
personal responsibility.
PROFILE
New York Soul in a Florida World
Realtor Amelia Hunter Gets to the Heart of Her Clients’ Needs
“It’s a blessing,” she said.
Respect and friendship of her fellow agents
are also important. Amelia nurtures those friendships
as much as she does her client relationships.
Competition does not come into play in
her office. The coworkers help and respect each
other, which adds to smoothness of operation.
Amelia’s professional titles include accredited
buyer representative (ABR), certified distressed
property expert (CDPE), graduate real estate institute
(GRI), and certified international property
specialist (CIPS). It should be noted that less than
7 percent of Realtors hold the CIPS designation.
Amelia also holds an active Florida Brokers Real
Estate License.
Amelia is continually enhancing her professional
skills and is involved in the Global Real
Estate Council of Orlando, Orlando Regional
Realtors Association, National Association of
Realtors, and Florida Association of Realtors. She
is also a member of the Luxury Home Institute,
Orlando Regional Chamber of Commerce,
Amelia Hunter
brings her go-get-em
attitute from New
York and applies it to
get things done for
her Central Florida
clients with Re/Max
Properties S.W.
Toastmasters International and Children’s Miracle
Network.
Because of her positive attitude, energy, empathy,
enthusiasm and attention to details, Amelia
has been awarded the Best Client Satisfaction
Award five years in row. She is most proud of
that.
When not working, Amelia enjoys the outdoors
with her husband of 10 years, Ralph; son,
Dylan; and their two cocker spaniels, Smitty
and Fletcher. Her community service time is
spent on various aspects of dog rescue.
“Everybody has a gift,” Amelia said. “If you
focus on it, you will shine.”
Let Amelia shine for you.
n Florida Supreme Court rules
in favor of voters
In a landmark decision, the Florida
Supreme Court upheld the will of
Orange County voters to hold nonpartisan
elections for county constitutional
officers, including clerk
of the circuit court, comptroller,
property appraiser, sheriff, supervisor
of elections and tax collector.
On Aug. 19, 2014, the Orange
County Board of Commissioners
enacted an ordinance giving voters
an opportunity to decide if
they wanted to amend the Orange
County Charter to provide for term
limits and nonpartisan elections for
the six constitutional officers. Prior
to the election, three constitutional
officers challenged the validity of
the ordinance. The ballot question
appeared on the Nov. 4, 2014, ballot
and passed by 71 percent. After
the election, the trial court upheld
the portion of the charter amendment
providing term limits, but struck
down the portion providing for nonpartisan
elections. On appeal, the
Fifth District Court of Appeal upheld
the decision of the trial court.
In November 2016, the Orange
County Charter Review Commission
placed essentially the same question
on the ballot, and it passed
again, this time by 70.5 percent. An
n Increased rainfall causes
flooding problems
by Debra Wood
As the Southwest community
grows, traffic and water-drainage issues
can present challenges for residents
and governments.
Residents on Gotha Road recently
experienced the flooding of
a private pond, with dead fish in
the pond and on its shores. Orange
County installed pumps to drain the
water, sending it to Lake Olivia, even
though the water was not coming
from a county road. This property
experienced a similar problem in
2004, according to Orange County.
“It’s landlocked, and it periodically
fills up over the years, so there’s not
a lot of outfall opportunity, making
had about 12 inches of rain per year
above normal. Basically, we need
to just wait for evaporation, which
is happening — but slower than
anticipated.”
Residents told WFTV-Channel 9
that the flooding first occurred when
the Florida Turnpike was expanded.
The Florida Turnpike denied
responsibility.
“This Turnpike project was designed
to meet all FDOT [Florida
Department of Transportation] and
SJRWMD [St. Johns River Water
Management District] criteria,”
wrote Chad Huff, public information
manager for Florida’s Turnpike
Enterprise, in an email. “This is documented
in SJRWMD Permit 4-095-
20358-12, issued Oct. 7, 2003. The
project included floodplain compensation
and a design that did
not increase roadway runoff to any
adjacent roads, homes or developments.
toy drive
Orange County’s Holiday Heroes
Toy Drive was a highly anticipated
event for its employees, volunteers
and the extended community in
Central Florida. Since its inception
in 2011, more than 39,000 toys
have been collected and distributed
to families across the county.
Neighborhood centers for families
(NCF) service providers helped identify
local families with the greatest
need and referred them to participate
in the annual toy-shopping events.
All NCFs in Orange County hosted
shopping events this year.
Orange County Mayor and
Southwest resident Jerry Demings
surprised three families during the holiday-shopping
event at the Ivey Lane
Neighborhood Center for Families.
Upon arrival, Mayor Demings spoke
with parents, escorted them through
the gingerbread house-themed shopping
experience, and helped them
select the perfect toys for their children.
Along with gifts, each family
received a box filled with food items
for holiday meals.
Other toy drive beneficiaries included
Orange County Public Schools’
Homeless Program, Wraparound
Orange, United Against Poverty
Orlando, Orlando United Assistance
Center, and Toys for Tots. This year,
Orange County employees and local
residents donated more than 4,200
gift items for children up to age 18.
As part of a yearlong office restructuring,
the Orange County Tax
Collector’s call center, mail processing
center and two motor vehicle offices
on West Colonial Drive in Orlando
and Winter Garden will relocate to
a larger, newly built facility at West
Oaks Mall in Ocoee. The move will
expand the tax collector’s presence in
growing west Orange County, increasing
the number of frontline employees
to serve the public by more than 60
percent and overall square footage by
more than 9,000 square feet.
Under Phase Two of the restructuring,
the Winter Garden branch will
In a monthlong initiative that took
place this past November, Marriott
Vacations Worldwide held its annual
Harvest for Hunger food drive,
which encouraged associates, owners
and guests to share in the spirit of
the holiday season by donating nonperishable
food items to benefit local
food banks. Central Florida’s associates
donated nearly 4 tons of food
this year to Second Harvest Food
Bank of Central Florida, equivalent to
more than 6,570 meals for families in
need. This was a 60 percent increase
above last year’s donations.
Launched in 2015, Harvest for
Hunger has collected and donated
more than 155 tons of nonperishable
MATTER OF HEALTH
Mental Health Tips
by Syed O. Quadri, M.D., Psychiatrist
Psych Pointe of Florida • 407-270-7702 • www.psychpointe.com
As we enter 2019, it would be a good
idea to reflect on your life and its related
medical and mental health status. We
make it a point to get a yearly physical
from our family physician but have we
ever thought of getting a yearly mental
health exam? The answer is probably
“no.” Maybe it’s time to begin this year
to help yourself and others in society. As
the suicide and homicide rates go up every
year, it is important for to introspect
and be proactive in getting help, if needed.
The following are some of the basic
tips to recognize and resolve if there is
something in your life that warrants help.
For children: Problems with sleep; appetite;
anger; irritability; aggression;
poor hygiene; poor social and communication
skills; obsession with electronics
and video games; temper tantrums; poor
grades in school, either due to mood or
concentration issues; having no friends;
fears or phobias; truancy; repeated
suspensions or detentions in school; issues
with sexuality; violence; self-harm
behaviors and/or substance use.
For adults: Problems with sleep, mood
and behaviors, loss of interest, excessive
guilt, isolation, skipping work and making
excuses, avoiding people, fear of being
in public places and social settings,
low self-esteem, feeling incomplete or not
accomplished in life, constantly arguing
with others, getting angry with people
easily, gambling, impulsive behaviors,
excessive consumption of alcohol or
substance use, marital and relationship
issues, and/or legal problems.
Let’s give ourselves some credit and
get a mental health check up in order
to be good humans and valuable
citizens for society. ª
