As we enter 2019, it would be a good
idea to reflect on your life and its related
medical and mental health status. We
make it a point to get a yearly physical
from our family physician but have we
ever thought of getting a yearly mental
health exam? The answer is probably
“no.” Maybe it’s time to begin this year
to help yourself and others in society. As
the suicide and homicide rates go up every
year, it is important for to introspect
and be proactive in getting help, if needed.
The following are some of the basic
tips to recognize and resolve if there is
something in your life that warrants help.
For children: Problems with sleep; appetite;
anger; irritability; aggression;
poor hygiene; poor social and communication
skills; obsession with electronics
and video games; temper tantrums; poor
grades in school, either due to mood or
concentration issues; having no friends;
fears or phobias; truancy; repeated
suspensions or detentions in school; issues
with sexuality; violence; self-harm
behaviors and/or substance use.
For adults: Problems with sleep, mood
and behaviors, loss of interest, excessive
guilt, isolation, skipping work and making
excuses, avoiding people, fear of being
in public places and social settings,
low self-esteem, feeling incomplete or not
accomplished in life, constantly arguing
with others, getting angry with people
easily, gambling, impulsive behaviors,
excessive consumption of alcohol or
substance use, marital and relationship
issues, and/or legal problems.
Let’s give ourselves some credit and
get a mental health check up in order
to be good humans and valuable
citizens for society. ª
