As concern grows over climate change there is a greater awareness on how we view transport. Mitsubishi Motors entered the electric revolution early with its cheeky iMiEV i-Car, since then it has concentrated largely on the plug-in hybrid Outlander, a vehicle that needs no introduction here with over 1000 units sold in the New Zealand market. While that figure doesn’t seem remarkable against 150,000 units globally, it is good when you take into consideration Kiwis are only just getting their heads around hybrids and electric vehicles in total. Mitsubishi Motors New Zealand has just recently made buying an Outlander PHEV even more tempting; as you would expect with scale of economies, the price is lowering, the range-topping PHEV VRX for 2<strong>01</strong>9 is now listed at $55,990, which by my reckoning is amazing value for money. The concept, shape and ease of use of the new Outlander PHEV hasn’t changed one bit, but it is more refined, and there have been engineering changes to improve comfort and stability along with greater steering response. That, along with some minor cosmetic enhancements, make the model even more desirable, and you also need to remember that the Outlander, even in this form, is a capable cross-country vehicle with propulsion also delivered to the rear through an electric motor. Like most modern electric vehicles, the Outlander PHEV has a fast charge connection and AC charging socket. These offer drivers the best of both worlds – the ability to charge overnight (6.5 hours from empty), along with fast charging from the ever-expanding nationwide roadside network. However, there’s more to PHEV than just plugging in, charging and then driving off, the hybrid system is true hybrid. Under the bonnet sits a four-cylinder, 2-litre engine which is rated at 88kW. It’s there to charge the batteries when they run low, as well as providing drive if there is no charge available. These functions are available to the driver at will, there are consolemounted buttons to either conserve battery charge or charge batteries through the forced introduction of the petrol engine. Amidst the complexity of the hybrid system the PHEV is capable of returning some amazing fuel usage statistics through the varying drive modes. At best possible usage, Mitsubishi rates the PHEV at an amazing 1.7-litres per 100km (166mpg). That, of course, can only be achieved under certain circumstances, but on a daily commute it can’t be ruled out. An overnight charge will cost around $3, depending on your service provider, and it is good for a 54km journey, electric propulsion is the priority. However, bear in mind that if you drive on petrol power the
