Paying down my mortgage or
saving for retirement
Juggling finances is often challenging, especially when you’re faced with competing priorities – paying the bills, budgeting for
a vacation, setting aside money for education, and contributing to an RRSP.
Canadians are split when it comes to deciding whether to pay down the mortgage or save for retirement:
Each Canadian’s financial situation is different.
Many want to pay down their mortgage as quickly as possible now, so
that they can use their home equity to help pay for their retirement. That
might not be the best way for you to go, since you can’t be sure how
much your home will be worth in the future. And will that home equity
provide enough money to pay for the retirement lifestyle you want to
live?
There is no standard answer, since each option has its advantages:
Pros: pay down mortgage
• Interest costs over the term of your mortgage become lower.
• You pay your mortgage off faster.
• The overall cost of your mortgage is reduced.
Pros: invest in RRSPs
• Contributions are tax deductible, which saves you money.
• Money grows tax free in your RRSP.
• Your retirement savings will grow more quickly.
Get the best of both worlds!
Another thing to keep in mind as you decide is that an RRSP directly reduces the amount of taxes you pay in the year you
make a contribution. As a result, most people can expect to receive a tax refund. While it’s tempting to spend this money,
there are strategies you can use to get an even bigger benefit from your refund cheque.
• Contribute to an RRSP and use the tax refund to pay down your mortgage. This strategy will give you all the advantages
associated with paying down your mortgage and investing in an RRSP.
• Contribute to an RRSP and use the tax refund to contribute more to your RRSP. This strategy maximizes the long-term
compounding of RRSP assets and helps build a solid capital base to fund your retirement.
In the end, choosing the “right” thing to do depends on your particular financial
situation and your long-term goals and objectives. But don’t lose sight of your retirement.
More Canadians are living longer. That means retirement income needs to
last a long time – 20 or 30 years, or even longer. I can show some strategies to you
that meet both goals.

To Protect Your Credit Score

Identity theft. We continue to hear of fraudsters hijacking
someone’s ID to access money or get credit. The victim is
burdened with proving “that wasn’t me!”
Identity theft also destroys one’s credit score, so you
can’t get a mortgage, vehicle loan or credit card until you
resolve things—a process that takes endless frustrating
hours. It’s not just negligent or careless people who have
their identity stolen.
It even happened to me. A photocopy of my identity
documents was compromised by a hotel administrator: an
inside job by a trusted professional. Having been a victim
despite my hyper-vigilant nature, I know the frustration
and vulnerability that accompany being targeted.
Prevention is key. These 12 tips will help reduce your risk
of identity theft:
1. Use biometric wallets like Apple Pay, a hardware-secured
payment system that uses one-time tokens rather
than credit card numbers and codes. Face and fingerprint
recognition safeguard against unauthorized use.
2. Remove any ID from your wallet or purse that you don’t
often need, and lock it away.
3. Swipe or tap your own payment cards on readers. Nearfield
communication (NFC) information used by contactless
cards can be scanned and later replicated.
4. Don’t open suspect emails or click on links within them.
Never open an unexpected attachment, no matter who it
appears to be from.
5. Be on guard for phone calls, visits, texts or emails from
strangers asking for personal information. Never give
out your date of birth, bank account number, or personal
information.
6. Refuse copying of your ID (at hotels, for instance) and
offer less invasive means of confirmation.
7. Shred all private and financial documents before discarding.
8. Update all financial institutions of any change to your
contact info.
9. Routinely check your credit reports, bank statements
and credit card bills line-by-line. Report anything suspicious.
10. Subscribe to a credit monitoring service, especially if
your identity might be compromised.
11. Look for the “https” (with an “s” for Secure) and padlock
icon beside a website’s URL indicating information is
encrypted in transit.
12. Never store your credit or debit PINs anywhere near
the cards. Use an encrypted password app.
If you suspect your identity has been compromised, get
help.

credit bureaus and your local police. Together we can
reduce everyone’s risk of identity theft.

Maintaining The Quality Of
The Floors In Your Room
Floating floor boards are usually used in the
surface mediums; that’s why it is more prone
to liquids and warps. Mopping is never recommended
if you have this kind of flooring.
How to clean your floor properly
Sweep and vacuum the floor regularly and
use a dust mop to get rid of any accumulated
dusts.
Use a damp cloth and a mild cleanser to clean
any stubborn dirt or spills on the floor. Never
use any abrasive scrubber on your floor boards
because it can damage its quality.
As much as possible, never spill any water on
the floor because it will result to any damage.
If ever this accident may happen, immediately
use a sponge or a dry cloth to get rid of the
water.
If ever there are paint, food stains or nail polish
spilled on the floor, use a rubbing alcohol or
a nail polish remover to get rid of the stains.
Wipe out the debris and never scrub the floor.
If wax is spilled on the floor, wait for it to dry up
and cool. Gently scrape the wax away and later
on use a sponge to wipe the area.
If there is a chewing gum stuck on the floor,
you an ice to harden it and scrape it away like
the way you did on the wax. Again, wipe the
area with a sponge to clean it.
Always check the manufacturer on how to
clean the floor boards. Some manufacturers
may want you to use specific brands to help
you maintain the cleanliness of the floors.
Tips for your floor boards
Do not let the floor have long periods of time
directed by sunlight, it can cause discoloration
of the floor or fade its colour. Use protectors
underneath your furniture to prevent any
scratches on the floor.
Place doormats on every door to trap the dirt
immediately and reduce it going to the floor.

Though Smith & Sons Remodelling Experts may be a
new name in the Great White North, our business and
experience are far from that! Founded in 2008, Smith &
Sons has seen exceptional success across Australia and
New Zealand and there are now 90 Smith & Sons offices

Born and raised in Australia, Max married a lovely Canadian
girl named Liz in 1995 and together raised SIX kids

certainly learnt a lot from raising six kids and doing
business at the same time, “I definitely understand
