The Nugent Siblings Get Engaged 

Paul and Susan Nugent of 

Orange Tree raised their children 

to treasure the closeness 

of family. Each from families of 

eight, the Nugents have three children: 

Danielle, 28; Joe, 23; and 

Jimmy, 22. 

“We wouldn’t be the Nugent kids 

if we weren’t close,” Danielle said. 

All three siblings are graduates of 

the University of Central Florida; they 

work out together, and they work 

together. They are all employed by 

PlanSource, a provider of corporate 

benefits packages in Orlando. Their 

cubicles are adjacent. 

Now here’s where it gets even 

more interwoven. 

Danielle was very surprised when 

she got engaged Nov. 16. Joe proposed 

to Lindsey Williams two 

by Leona Braun 

weeks later, and two weeks after, 

Jimmy popped the question to 

McKenzie McNeil. The boys are 

engaged to UCF roommates who 

have lived together since their freshman 

year. The boys and their fiancés 

each met five years ago in high 

school at The First Academy. 

In fact, Jimmy and McKenzie performed 

in a school production of 

Little Women together, appearing as 

the lovers Dr. Bhaer and Jo March. 

Joe and Lindsey met on a mission 

trip. Danielle, who attended Dr. 

Phillips High School, met her future 

husband, Matt Sexton, while 

dancing at Cowboys. 

“I love the girls like sisters,” 

Danielle said. “They’re awesome.

other’s weddings. Of course, Joe 

and Jimmy are each other’s best 

man. The brothers were born only a 

year and three weeks apart. 

That makes for a lot of dresses 

bought and tuxes rented. Susan is 

thankful she and Paul only have to 

pay for one reception. The guests 

will get to rack up frequent flyer 

miles. 

The couples will not be going on 

their honeymoons together. They 

each have different destinations in 

mind. Some are seeking tropical climates, 

others seeking an adventure. 

It will be interesting to see the birth 

order of each couple’s first child. 

Will the cousins keep to the same 

order set by their parents and aunts 

and uncles? 

Right now Susan is “over the moon” 

with all the details to address. She 

was very happy that both of her sons 

even included her and Paul in their 

ring selection processes. But after the 

weddings, Susan is looking forward to 

a weeklong vacation alone with Paul, 

driving along the Smokey Mountains. 

“We are super lucky to have a 

close family,” Danielle said. “It’s one 

of those little blessings in life. It’s a 

joy for us to be together.” ª

Scott Millson, president of Track 

Shack Youth Foundation, announced 

that the foundation’s board of trustees 

recently awarded more than 

$41,600 to 31 area schools and 

organizations that provide healthand-fitness 

education and encourage 

young people to participate in 

a wide range of sports and fitnessrelated 

activities in Brevard, Orange, 

Osceola and Seminole counties. 

The funds were given out based on 

grants that were submitted from each 

organization, with a detailed explanation 

of their fitness programs and 

the youth the programs support. 

The most recent Southwest-area 

grant recipients and their programs 

include Spring Lake Elementary, 

Spring Lake Road Runners; Ocoee 

High School, boys and girls track 

teams; and Windermere High, 

girls flag football.

A week after winning the FHSAA 

Regional Championship, Dr. Phillips 

High School’s competitive 

cheerleading team put on its best 

performance of the year to date to 

capture the program’s seventh Metro 

West Conference Championship in 

the past nine years. The squad was 

able to nail all its stunts, racking up 

84.5 points with zero deductions, 

a full five points above the secondplace 

team. 

The Quack Attack on Poverty 

5K will be held Feb. 16 at Harbor 

Park at Baldwin Park, located at 

4990 New Broad St. in Orlando. 

Registration opens at 7 a.m., and the 

race begins at 8 a.m. 

The 5K is a professionally timed 

race for runners, joggers and 

walkers of all ages and abilities. 

Participants are required to wear 

an inflatable duck-shaped pool 

float throughout a 3.1-mile course 

that features bubble, squirt gun and 

quack zones. 

Adult registration is $35 through 

Feb. 12 and $40 through Feb. 16, 

$15 for youth under age 18, and 

$25 for adult team members of 10 or 

more runners. Cost includes split ring 

duck float, T-shirt, finisher medal, refreshments 

and more.

only breast cancer survivor dragon 

boat team, will hold its sixth annual 

Golf Like a Warrior Tournament

Dr. Phillips High School’s 

women’s weightlifting won its 

third district championship in four 

years. The Panthers broke five individual 

records and tied six more. 

DPHS then went on to win the regional

Junior Jada St. Cyr won the 

154-pound weight class for her second 

regional championship in a row. 

Sophomore Zamora St. Cyr also 

won a regional championship, and 

senior Amani Guzman won her 

second consecutive regional championship 

in the unlimited division. She 

set a new school record clean and 

jerk of 195 pounds. The ladies will 

travel to Panama City on Feb. 8 for 

the state championship.

Education released the 2017-18 

graduation rates for the state, school 

districts and high schools. Orange 

County Public Schools had a record-high 

graduation rate of 96.1 

in its 19 traditional high schools for 

the school year and a 2.3 percent 

increase from the 2016-17 figures. 

Southwest-area high school graduation 

rates for the 2017-18 school 

year were: Dr. Phillips High, 

95.7 percent; Ocoee High, 94.5 

percent; Olympia High, 98 percent;

Downtown Orlando’s Lake Eola Park hosts the 

25th annual Paws in the Park, the city’s largest 

dog walk, festival and fundraiser, featuring 

adoptable dogs, pet-friendly vendors, doggy 

sports, food trucks, a beer garden, raffles and
