Guests were treated to a variety of delicious dishes and wines in a festive and fun atmosphere. The evening kicked off with a welcome drink of MCC sparkling wine from Le Barrique owner Ronelle Wright, showcasing the incredible wines of Alvi’s Drift from Worcester, in the Western Cape. The award-winning wine farm has produced some fantastic wines and the selection for the pairing evening certainly did not disappoint. “In the last eight years, I have opened my own business and Alvi’s Drift was one of the first in my por tfolio,” said Wright, who welcomed everyone to the evening with, “kick off your shoes and enjoy, because that is what life is all about.” Graze by the River owner Nick Howard was cooking up a storm and what was presented, each and every time, was something special and unique. The first item on the menu for the evening was an asparagus, goat cheese and pecan nut salad which was paired superbly with a light and fruity sauvignon blanc, bringing out and complimenting the flavours of the summer salad. The second dish presented was a combination of chicken and prawn sate which are due to be added shortly to the Graze menu. The chicken sate was accompanied by a peanut and coconut sauce and paired with a full-bodied viognier wine which went well with the spiciness of the dish. The meal itself was aromatic and spicy without being overpowering. Those in attendance echoed the same sentiment – that they would most certainly be back for more. The main course was based on the French traditional duck cassoulet – locally sourced duck legs marinated in red wine with fresh plums and cherries, and slow roasted for three hours. The meal itself was succulent and flavourful and the choice came down to two different wines with which to pair, depending on one’s preference. The choices were that of a pinotage or Drift Fusion and both wines had their merits with some in attendance preferring one or the other as perfect accompaniments to the duck. Dessert was a key lime pie with a homemade apricot and pecan nut ice cream and a granadilla and honey reduction, accompanied by the Muscat de Frontignan which is a rich, ripe and luscious fortified dessert wine. The delicious pairing highlighted the sweetness of the dessert and wine. It was another successful event for Graze by the River and Le Barrique who provided not only delicious food and wine but a enjoyable evening for all. Little ones had a ball doing egg and spoon races, bean bag toss, sprints and other fun activities. Pupils were divided into the Lions team or the Eagles COLOUR CODING: Shaw Park Primary grade 2 pupils, Tiffany Engelbrecht, left, and Savanna Stewart, enjoyed learning about primary and secondary colours in art class. All the children did well mixing their own purple, orange and greens ECO EXCELLENCE: Elána Bothma is only in grade 1 at Port Alfred High School and has already handed in two boxes of eco-bricks she has made with a little help from her family. The school is hoping to build a tennis clubhouse and appeals to the community to assist with 2l cooldrink eco-bricks by dropping them off at the front office FIFTY ON THE TROT: Port Alfred High School’s estate manager, Lance Parker, recently completed his 50th Port Alfred Park Run.
