Public asked to lighten
marine inspector load
JON HOUZET
Local marine conservation
inspectors with the
department of agriculture
(Daff), forestry and fisheries h av e
appealed to the public to contact
them immediately if they see
suspected abuse of marine
resources, like perlemoen
poaching.
This follows a complaint by a
concerned member of the public,
who did not want to be named for
fear of retribution from perlemoen
poachers and rock worm diggers.
He took photographs of the
diggers in action and also of a
small pile of perlemoen shells at
Shelly Beach recently – evidence
of poaching.
“More and more ‘fishermen’ are
going into the rocks from Kelly’s
to Shelly Beach and Flame Lilly to
dig out worm-bait,” our source
said.
“The problem with this is that
these guys destroy quite large
tracts of the rocks and coast,
areas which due to the
destructiveness, never fully
recover. My pictures show some
of the people involved. Several
municipal road workers are also
seen during their tea breaks, if
the tide is low.”
As for perlemoen poaching, he
said: “It has been years since we
have had the perlemoen scourge
in Kowie. Sadly over the past
week [January 21], I have noticed
very worrying signs of this
activity returning.”
He said he had come across
many piles of perlemoen shells,
mostly among the rocks. He sent
a photo of a pile he came across
in the Shelly Beach carpark.
“Last night [January 20], as the
tide got lower, it was easy to see
several torches at the rocks.
Tonight and tomorrow night will
again be perfect conditions,” he
said.
“I am not sure if the SAPS or
Daff will do much, hence my mail
to you to highlight/ investigate
this so they can possibly up their
game a bit.”
In response this week, Daff
senior inspector Nomfihlelo
Ngeleza said the department had
gone to patrol the areas
mentioned, but did not come
across any illegal activity.
“We will keep an eye on that.
The challenge is we are only two
inspectors covering the whole
coastline from Fish River to
Sundays River. Sometimes we will
not be in Port Alfred, we’ll be in
Sundays River or Cannon Rocks.
“When someone sees people
taking perlemoen, they must
please call us immediately. We
also work with the police, and if
we can’t make it, we’ll call the
police,” Ngeleza said.
She said the public could call
her on 078-935-6316, or Andile
Maki on 073-387-0451, or Phindile
Pupa on 082-519-4007.
Pupa said concerned members
of the public could also approach
Daff to become honorary
inspectors, and help them with
their work.
Anyone interested can visit
their office at 34 Campbell Street.
He said that the pile of
perlemoen shells at Shelly Beach
looked older than two months.
ILLEGAL ACTIVITY: A local resident fears perlemoen poachers
may be active in the area again after coming across piles of
shells, like this one at Shelly Beach
REASON TO SMILE: Lindile Bhamba, a
destitute man in Nemato, has been amazed
by the help he has been given to better his
living circumstances
Two churches, a bridge club and car
guard come to homeless man’s aid
In September last year, Talk of the Town
published an article about Lindile
Bhamba, a destitute man in poor health
living in squalor in N e m at o .
A local car guard, Edward Nomfele,
who lives in the main RDP house on the
property, brought the plight of Bhamba
to TotT’s attention in an effort to expose
his terrible living conditions and appeal
for help from the community.
Although poor themselves, Nomfele
and his wife had committed themselves
to providing Bhamba with breakfast and
supper each day.
The article caught the attention of a
number of readers, and thanks to the
combined efforts of the Wesley
Methodist and Catholic Churches in Port
Alfred, a new shack was handed over to
Bhamba the week after Christmas.
The way volunteer Dermot Moore
described Bhamba’s previous living
circumstances, “the Black Hole of
Calcutta would have looked like 5-star
accommodation to him.”
The members of the Port Alfred Bridge
Club, which meets at the Moth Hall, also
collaborated with Nomfele to secure
various essential items for Bhamba.
Nomfele provided a small portion of
his own plot in Nemato on which to
place the new shack.
“Thanks also to Peter and Colleen
Wallach from the UK who financed a bed,
to Settlers Park who donated two
windows and a carpet, and to Build-It for
their discount on materials,” Moore said.
Representing the two churches, Emil
Jurgensen, Jo Rice and Don Kelly visited
Bhamba in his new shack.
