Feathers Farm, a local egg producer in the Southwell district with more than 70 years in the business has a dedicated food safety team that implements an intensive Food Safety Management System (FSMS). The FSMS prepares all year round for an annual audit that takes place to ensure that Feathers Farm complies to a variety of national and international legislation and standard. To date, Feathers Farm has never scored less than 95% for an audit which means that customers buying Scratch Patch free range as well as local house brands and Top Lay eggs can rest assured that their eggs are of the highest quality. About 40 policies and procedures covering every area of production, from the initial well-being of the hens right through to how the eggs are delivered to customers are implemented daily. Every step of production is monitored and recorded. More than 20 quality checks are conducted in areas such as hygiene, process control, quality control, maintenance control and finally system management. Laboratory tests of the product/water and surface swabs are outsourced to SANAS-accredited labs and done as per a detailed testing matrix. All equipment and machinery used in the process undergo stringent calibration and maintenance plans. All add to the special feeling one has when one returns home or is just enjoying the space. On Wednesday morning, I got up early and walked around the garden. It was a special time; there had been rain during the night and as the sun came up, the rays sparkled on the leaves of the trees, the sky was clear and there was a gentle breeze blowing. As I sat in one of my favourite places I felt that life couldn’t get much better. As one does, when one sits and looks out over paradise, I MYHOME ... with Simon Oliver started thinking how lucky I am to be living where I do, and how much I love my home. I thought it couldn’t get much better, when I saw Judy caressing a warm cup of tea and offering to make one for me. It was then that I realised that it is the people who pass through our home that makes it so special. The people who work there, the visitors who come from far and wide and bring many and varied topics to our conversations, the friends and, most especially, J u d y. I have shared my life with her for more than 40 years and as I have told many newlyweds who visit us, as time goes by the relationship gets better and better. I attribute this not only to making a wonderful choice all those years ago, but more importantly, learning fairly early on in our marriage that the more you put into it the more you get out. Judy’s mom used to say “Cast your crumbs onto the water ... and they come back sandwiches.” I don’t mind telling you that I have a Dagwood sandwich! It is important to understand that interesting does not mean good, just something we need to think about. Take for example the recent Bathurst protests where residents were told not to attempt to go to work for fear of being beaten or worse. A similar threat on residents was made in Nemato early on Wednesday although that only lasted for a few hours before the curfew was lifted. Perhaps the bigger problem with these interesting events is that they prevent people from using the roads to and from Port Alfred, thus causing businesses to lose money and the possibility that employees will lose their jobs. Another major problem is the destruction that accompanies these protests with burning tyres, destroying road surfaces and potentially causing brush fires (particularly at this time of severe drought), buildings burnt, telephone poles knocked down and burnt and more. Similar protests have occurred in Kenton/Ekuphumleni, as well as Alexandria over the last few years with similar outcomes. In the previous Bathurst protest, residents were complaining about ward 5 councillor Andile Marasi while, on Wednesday in Nemato, it was apparently regarding pre-election promises made by councillors during election time that are never implemented once the councillor is elected. But, who do these protests really harm? How much money needs to be found to repair the damage caused before any can be found to rectify the problem? How does it assist the cause by preventing (and, in many cases, threatening) ordinary people from earning a living? We have a constitutional right to protest, but there must be a better way to air grievances. It’s time to rethink “p r ot e st ” action. May I suggest that he gets to know how the municipality operates as several of the existing councillors seem to have a problem understanding that taking money from one or more items on the council vote register means that service delivery in another area will be adversely affected. THE water crisis that plagued greater Port Alfred over the last week, seems to be over and, with luck, we can rely on a constant flow of potable water from here on. That is, unless we experience most failures in infrastructure or load-shedding from Eskom. The art of diplomacy seems lost on the ruling party.
