Great vibe at Rotary E-Club Swim-a-thon
Event to help end polio
draws record 26 teams
NTOMBENTSHA MSUTU
People braved the windy
weather on Saturday to
participate in the Rotary
Swim-a-thon at Port
Alfred High School pool to raise
funds to eradicate polio.
Jointly organised by the
Rotary E-Club of South Africa
One, the Port Alfred Lions Club
(who were the defending
champs) and Port Alfred High
School – 2019’s event attracted
a record number of 26 teams
swimming for 30 minutes in five
h e at s .
The aim was to swim as many
laps as possible.
Neighbouring schools were
also invited to participate, such
as Dambuza Primary School,
Alexandria High School and El
Shaddai Christian Academy.
There were 15 teams from Port
Alfred High School, and Port
Alfred Primêre also took part.
There were food stalls and
music and a great vibe, with
families, friends and teachers
coming in their numbers to
support their favourite teams
and swimmers. Laura Guest,
head of marketing alumni and
development at PAHS,
expressed how it was such an
honour for PAHS to take part in
the event.
“Port Alfred High School is so
proud to play a part in ending
polio with Rotary International in
such a fun and physically
beneficial way,” Guest said.
There were two floating
trophies for the winners – fo r
under and above 13 years of
age.
The results for the Under 13s:
In third place was the PAHS
yellow team with 76 laps,
followed by the lilac team with
78 laps, and El Shaddai was in
first place with 87 laps.
Then the 13-year-olds and
older were as follows: In third
place was the Lions Port Alfred
with 101 laps, with EP Body
Surfing in second place with 102
laps, and in first place – taking
the trophy from the Lions team
– was the PAHS purple team.
Hans Hon of Rotary E-Club
thanked the following sponsors
who made this event possible
and provided much-needed
Port Alfred
Bowling Club
When we were still at
school we partook in
team games. Each team
had a captain whom we
acknowledged as the
leader of our team.
We respected his
decisions and supported
him with a Tennyson-like
fervour – “Ours not to
reason why – ours but to
do or die”.
Now! Although we are
much older, we still play
bowls in teams which are
led by a skip who is ipso
fa c t o our captain.
The success of a
bowling team is often
dependent on the “gees”
within that team.
The skip should, as
soon as possible,
establish a rapport
between the members
of the team and
generate a belief in
themselves and their
teammates: compatibility
= commitment =
confidence.
The skip should
endeavour to take note of
the preferences of each
member and adjust his
strategy to accommodate
those preferences.
He must also take note
of the opponents’
instructions and be
prepared to change his
own to counter their play
... what’s happening
by placing strategic
bowls among theirs.
The players should
accept the skips reading
of the head and his
inst ructions
In any head there
might be alternative
modes of approach, for
example, from the
optimistic aggressive
approach to the
conservative “what can
go wrong” approach.
Once the skip has
made up his mind it is
You not only have to listen to the bidding, but you have to think of its consequences!
¹ 2H is not an ideal bid, but your hearts are not quite good enough to jump
to 3H, the alternative is to jump to 4D, which is not ideal because partner
may hold the AQx in spades and you miss out on 3NT. After East has bid 3C
(change of suit at the ‘three level’ is semi-forcing) West must not bid 3NT. It
is clear from the bidding that East must be short of spades and that a spade
lead is a certainty against a 3NT contract, as four pairs found out when their opponents took
À
for Aces as a slam try. If West shows two aces then you are in the slam, but if West shows 0 or
1 Ace then you can stop in 5D; a contract that you would bid anyway. After West has shown one
Ace, almost certainly the diamond Ace; and you are in need of some good scores, you might
try for 6D. Your doubleton heart could enable you to bring in the heart suit, and after losing a
spade you have control of the hands. Note that if West had been the dealer and opened 1H, to
which East responded 2D; thereby probably denying a spade suit, East –West should avoid ‘No
trump’ contracts because of the perceived weakness in spades.
not for any member of
the team to show his
dissent.
Unless the skip has
actually brought his third
into the discussion, the
skip’s opinion must
prevail and it is up to the
team to support him.
Showing dissent and
creating doubt in the
skip’s mind is a recipe for
d i s a st e r.
Tuesday was Pig and
Whistle day. Rain
interrupted play after 15
ends, at which stage Tony
Brown, Gerald Mills, and
Rob Sandilands were well
up and qualified for a
visit to the Pig.
T h u r s d ay ’s megabucks
was a bit restricted
because of the threat of
rain but those who did
turn up had a most
enjoyable afternoon.
Dick Schuurman,
Lennie Clark, Gil Turner,
and Ron Ruiters were on
form and made off with
the mega-bucks.
On Saturday, we had
four teams at Port Alfred
playing the first rounds of
the Colleen Timm and
Moore Shield
Competitions.
With our men and
ladies each winning one
and losing one, Kowie
ended up in the middle.
At home we had some
very close games with
Mike Beaumont, Keith
Benson, and Ronel
Roome winning with a
score of 8 plus 2.
On Sunday, we hosted
the Inter-Provincial teams
of Eastern Province and
B o r d e r.
This annual friendly
produced excellent
bowls.
One of the features of
the play was the number
of full-blooded drives the
players resorted to
without much success.
A missed drive is a
wasted shot – I just hope
they are more accurate at
the Nationals in March.
Also on Sunday, two
teams of our novices
went to Grahamstown.
They won some and
made friends in the
others but had a good
time all round.
Kenton Bowling
Club
The Kenton Business
League got off to a great
start last week, with 22
teams joining in the fun
and creating a fantastic
atmosphere on week one
of the competition.
This sees a significant
growth on 2018’s
Business League and we
look forward to some
strong competition, good
business networking and
fun-filled evenings with
the Kenton business
community over the next
couple of months.
Mention must be made
of the good quality of
bowling on display –
clearly our business
friends have spent their
time well.
Winners on the night
included the Buco
Rollers, Pandoras, Dias
Young Guns, The Tennis
Balls, The Spanners, The
Tennis Bats, The
Amazons, Kenton Lawn
Rangers, Southwell Club
and The Rolling House
and the standout
performance of the
evening was undoubtedly
the resounding 30 shot
win by Pam Golding, who
received the evening’s
This deal poses some interesting questions, which were unsuccessfully answered by nearly half
of the Red Section.
North is of course too strong for a pre-empt and will open 1H; West’s double
is automatic; so South must consider a bid. Normally he/she would bid
1S, but with East likely to be holding four spades, such a bid is counterproductive.
The hand is worth only one bid, so make it helpful to partner by
bidding 2H. West now knows that South has a weak hand, but do you bid
3D holding only 3 points, two of which may be useless, together with a six card suit headed by
only the Jack? Your shortage in hearts is likely to be a pointer to further bidding from North, so
À
too weak to make a ‘free bid’ but have a long suit. The 4H bid was doubled by four pairs (includ-
Á
À
note that North must take out any ‘no trump’ contracts into heart contracts! The 3NT contracts
should have made only 5 tricks.
The Colleen Timm and
competitions started on
Saturday at Port Alfred,
with our Kenton men’s
teams both coming
second on the day to Port
ladies suffering the same
fate against the same
opposition. We live to
fight another day!
Fr i d ay ’s attendance
draw was missed by
Stoffel Scheepers, which
means that this week’s
prize money increases by
a further R100. No luck
on the joker draw last
week either for Tony
There is no shortage of
