An authentic alpine area
In a privileged natural Alpine setting that is almost perfectly preserved, the
St-Bernard region offers a wide range of sports and cultural activities.
In summer, there is something that will appeal to every hiker - educational
paths, mountain huts, alpine lakes, nature reserves, walks with St-Bernard
dogs or treks over several days - all will brighten up your holidays, right up to
October when our forests - which are amongst Switzerland’s largest - attire in
their most beautiful colours.
Don’t hesitate to enhance your stay with a visit to the Grand-St-Bernard
Hospice Museum – one of the most visited in Valais, as well as to the Flore-Alpe
botanical garden in Champex-Lac, one of the richest and most prestigious in
the Alps, or to the old Champex-Lac Artillery Fort, for a journey in time through
our Swiss history, or with the treetop walk at La Fouly for a moment of fun in
the trees or with a dip in one of our swimming pools to freshen up.
In winter, our charming resorts offer ski runs and freeride itinaries for all levels
with spectacular panoramic views, cross country ski runs in breathtaking
natural surroundings and snowshoe trails in the heart of our white forests.

Respect for nature 4
Here are a few suggestions to look after and respect nature.
1. Respect the restrictions
Pay attention to the notice boards in the area.
2. Use the existing paths and itineraries
This helps protect the delicate biotopes of the fauna and flora. Don't trespass on
private property and close gates behind you.
3. Preserve the flora and nesting areas
Follow the existing detours and don't go near the top of the rocks as these are fragile.
Avoid rocks covered with dense vegetation, don't pick any plants in the crevices and
stay well away from nesting areas in the cliffs.
4. Keep climbing areas clean
Take your rubbish away with you.
5. Travel ecologically
Take advantage of the numerous offers on public transports: www.cff.ch.
6. Respect any restrictions on access or parking
It is generally forbidden to drive along forest tracks. Avoid parking in unauthorized
areas: this annoys farmers and land owners and can damage vegetation.
7. Eat local produce and save water and energy
Spending the night in the area and buying local produce helps support mountain
regions and makes your climb eco-friendlier. Save water and energy in your
accommodation: both are in limited supply!
8. Keep dogs on a leash, especially in the forest
Dogs love chasing wild animals, which puts them under a lot of stress.

Get around the village of Champex-Lac in complete peace of mind with the
new winter shuttle! The mountains, the frozen lake and the beauty of winter
are all at your fingertips, without the hassle of parking. This new free shuttle
will run from the parking lot above the Champex-Lac swimming pool to the
start of the Breya chairlift.

trails for a complete winter experience. Whether
you're a mountain enthusiast or a nature lover,
everything you need for a memorable season is in
this map. It's available free of charge from Pays
du St-Bernard tourist offices.

This north-east-facing path is often well covered in snow. It ascends to the start of
the Val d'Arpette and joins the Relais d'Arpette before descending along the Champex
bisse. It is ideal for discovering the wild unspoilt nature of the Val d'Arpette, a small
protected valley away from Champex-Lac.

This trail leads to the Bavon ridge, above the hamlet of Vichères, in the heart of the
Liddes commune. Straddling the Grand-Saint-Bernard valley and Val Ferret, it offers
plenty of sunshine and a 360° view of the Combins and Dolent massifs on the French-
Italian-Swiss border.

along the edge of the forest alongside the River Dranse. It takes its name from the
deer park next to the trail.

This mostly forest trail takes you up the slopes of Pointe de Penne to the east of the
village of Bourg-Saint-Pierre, offering a great view on occasion of the old village
of Bourg-Saint-Pierre before entering the Combe du Valsorey and returning to the
starting point.

This very pretty trail, starting from the last Valais village before the Italian border,
crosses the River Dranse and follows it through the forest at the bottom of the valley.
Make the most of this walk to discover the old village of Bourg-St-Pierre and its
thousand-year-old bell tower!

Beginner and fearless slippery sliders alike – fly down the run at Champex-Lac with
a hair raising 700 metres height difference. For our small guest, the run at La Fouly
provides a chance to try out this fun activity!

Do you want to discover the villages of the Pays du St-Bernard in a fun way?
Captain Saint-Bernard is the BIGGEST of the pirates in the valley, his ship navigates
the dangerous waters where he reigns terror! But he is not very young! He sometimes
loses his mind a little but Hush, you shouldn't tell him anything.
Today, he forgot the most important thing in his eyes, the combination of his treasure
chest!
To do this, go to a tourist office to remove the different cards, each card opens a
treasure chest. Then go find the answers in our villages and come back to one of our
offices to perhaps succeed in opening the treasure ...

Grand-St-Bernard pass 39
A thoroughfare that has been used for thousands of years, between Switzerland and
Italy, the pass is one of the not-to-be-missed locations in the St-Bernard region.
A treasure at the heart of the mountain, the Grand-St-Bernard Hospice has for
centuries brought peace and comfort to travellers.
It was in the 11th century that Bernard de Mento, archdeacon, and future St-Bernard
of Mont-Joux, founded this hostel for travellers crossing the pass.
Today, the hospice is not simply a place to stay en route but a haven of peace
encouraging spirituality.
As the pass is closed in winter, access is only possible on showshoes or back-country
skis. Please ensure that you obtain prior information regarding the conditions and that
you are accompanied by a guide.

Walk with the St-Bernard dogs 40
Working with the canons to rescue travellers, the St-Bernard dogs originate from
Grand-St-Bernard Hospice at an altitude of 2500m. Strong and gentle, they embody
the friendship and welcoming tradition of this emblematic location. Barry is its most
famous representative.
The tour is done in the company of two to four dogs harnessed to a sled on which
children up to 8 years old can take their seats and let themselves be pulled. Adults
walk alongside dogs and can keep them on a leash.

Artillery fort / Champex-Lac
The Artillery Fort at Champex-Lac constituted the central pivot of the Grand St
Bernard region’s fortifications between 1940 and 1943. Modernised and adapted in
the event of a possible nuclear war, the fort was used until 1998.

This museum presents the history of the parish and the municipality’s religious places.

Visit the space dedicated to him at the back of the Orsières church, the chapel at the
top of the church and his birthplace in the village of La Rosière (free, open year-round).

Anybody who is not domiciled in the municipality has to pay a tourist tax. This can be
paid either to the accommodation organisation itself or at one of our tourist office. The
tourist tax goes towards funding the tourist offices, entertainment in the resorts and
the development of information flyers.
Tourist tax for hotels, chalets and apartments
Adult per night: CHF 3.60 in Orsières and Liddes, CHF 1.80 in Bourg-Saint-Pierre
Annual once-off fee: CHF 180.- per UPM in Orsières, CHF 108.- per UPM in Liddes, CHF
54.- per adult in Bourg-Saint-Pierre
Children per night (6-16 years old): CHF 1.80 in Orsières and Liddes, CHF 0.90 in Bourg-
Saint-Pierre

As prescribed by the law, an accommodation tax must also be paid by your landlord in
the Liddes and Bourg-St-Pierre municipalities. In the Orsières municipality (including
Champex-Lac and La Fouly), the accommodation tax has been replaced with a tourist
promotion tax.
