more varieties of bagged rock and mulch. 

• Apply mulch in late spring. This helps reduce soil 

temperature and save water.

• Apply fine mulches one to two inches deep. Coarse 

or fluffy mulches should be put on three to four 

inches deep.

• Apply mulch evenly and level it with a rake or your 

hands.

• Wet thoroughly after applying mulch.

Here are a few tips on choosing and applying mulch: 

• Choose mulch that is long lasting and not easily 

washed away. 

• Pick mulch that has a loose structure to let water 

pass through quickly. 

Pull mulch a few inches away from plant stems and tree 

trunks. 

To further control weeds and keep plants healthy, 

there’s a new mulch called Vigoro Mulch with Weed

Above Ground Pools 

Essential Care Tips 

Soon spring will be here and it will be time to undergo 

the task of opening your above ground swimming pool. 

Planning will make your job a whole lot easier. There is 

nothing worse than realizing you’re short one bag of 

shock when you are in the middle of prepping the pool. 

So first, you need to make a list of chemicals that are 

needed. 

The needs will vary depending upon the type of pool 

you own. Therefore, this article will talk about it in 

general. You should always refer to your pool and pump 

instructions for additional information. Things you 

will likely need are liquid or powder shock, bromine, 

chlorine powder or tablets, sanitizing cartridge for the 

cartridge filters, pH increase or decrease and a test kit 

to test the chemical levels. 

Do not take off just yet and run to the local pool supply 

store for chemicals. Stop and take a few minutes to 

check out all of your hoses, skimmer baskets, clamps, 

gaskets and o-rings. If any of the parts look like they 

might need replaced, take them with you to the pool 

supply store. It is a lot easier to match replacement 

parts if you have the old part with you. 

Now that you have the easy part finished, it is time 

to begin the fun. The first thing required taking the 

cover off. You will want to enlist help for this, because 

you want to avoid getting any top water into the pool 

water. In an above ground pool, you should siphon the 

water off with a hose. 

To get a good siphon started, hook up the hose to the 

spigot and put the other end of the hose into the top 

water. Turn the hose on for a minute to fill it. Next crimp 

the hose a foot or two away from the faucet, and with 

your other hand, disconnect the hose from the spigot. 

Position the hose at a downspout drain to discharge 

then let go of the crimp. The water will reverse and start 

to drain. 

Once you have the water cleared, use a leaf rake to 

remove as many leaves and twigs as possible. Next, remove 

your cover weights or springs. At this time a few 

people positioned around the pool will help to keep 

the cover out of the water. Try to fold your cover like a 

blanket keeping the crud in the middle then remove 

the cover. You need to scrub the cover thoroughly so it 

is dry for summer storage. 

Now it is time to attach all the pump hoses. Remember 

to lube plugs, fittings, valves, and o-rings with petroleum 

jelly. Also, be sure to remove any freeze plugs that 

were used to cover the hose openings. You will most 

likely need to add water to the pool. It needs to be filled 

to the skimmer halfway point. 

At this point you should start re-circulating the water 

and check for any leaks around the pump and hoses. 

Once your pool is leak and drip free, skim off as much 

floating debris as you can with your skimmer net. Open 

all your valves to flood the hoses and prime the pool 

pump. Most manufacturers recommend constant recirculation 

of the pool water for at least three days. Any 

crud and debris on the sides and bottom of the pool 

will need to be scrubbed off. Use the broom attachment 

of your pool vacuum for this. 

After all debris has been removed and the pool has 

been scrubbed, check your filter for cleaning. Some 

pumps have removable filters; others are back-flushed, 

so clean as directed. Once the filter is cleaned, you can 

now super shock the water as per your manufacturer’s 

instructions. If you start with green water, you will need 

a lot more shock. It may take a few days of recirculation 

to clear the water. Once the water has cleared, test your 

water or take a sample to your pool supply store and 

have it analyzed. Adjust the water as required and keep 

the recirculation going. All that is now left to do now is 

to wait for the water to warm up so you can start enjoying 

your pool.

Maintaining The Quality Of 

The Floors In Your Room 

Floating floor boards are usually used in the 

surface mediums; that’s why it is more prone 

to liquids and warps. Mopping is never recommended 

if you have this kind of flooring. 

How to clean your floor properly 

Sweep and vacuum the floor regularly and 

use a dust mop to get rid of any accumulated 

dusts. 

Use a damp cloth and a mild cleanser to clean 

any stubborn dirt or spills on the floor. Never 

use any abrasive scrubber on your floor boards 

because it can damage its quality. 

As much as possible, never spill any water on 

the floor because it will result to any damage. 

If ever this accident may happen, immediately 

use a sponge or a dry cloth to get rid of the 

water. 

If ever there are paint, food stains or nail polish 

spilled on the floor, use a rubbing alcohol or 

a nail polish remover to get rid of the stains. 

Wipe out the debris and never scrub the floor. 

If wax is spilled on the floor, wait for it to dry up 

and cool. Gently scrape the wax away and later 

on use a sponge to wipe the area. 

If there is a chewing gum stuck on the floor, 

you an ice to harden it and scrape it away like 

the way you did on the wax. Again, wipe the 

area with a sponge to clean it. 

Always check the manufacturer on how to 

clean the floor boards. Some manufacturers 

may want you to use specific brands to help 

you maintain the cleanliness of the floors. 

Tips for your floor boards 

Do not let the floor have long periods of time 

directed by sunlight, it can cause discoloration 

of the floor or fade its colour. Use protectors 

underneath your furniture to prevent any 

scratches on the floor. 

Place doormats on every door to trap the dirt 

immediately and reduce it going to the floor. 

If you have petsComputer Technology Articles, 

always trim their nails so that they won’t 

scratch your floor. 

Don’t wear a stiletto heels when on the floor 

because it can also scratch the floor. 

Remember that a floor board that is constantly 

cleaned can have a longer life and can maintain 

its beautiful quality. Make sure that you 

exercise good judgment in every stain that 

might incur.

This year at the 2019 Edmonton Home + Garden Show happening March 

21-24 at the Edmonton Expo Centre, we’ve brought in kitchen experts 

to help tackle the most popular room of the home. Kitchens are often 

the first room up for a renovation since it’s the space that’s used the 

most and where we tend to see the most people hang out. We eat three 

meals there (sometimes more!) and it has now transformed into the hub 

of entertainment for homeowners. MasterChef season 7 winner Shaun 

O’Neale and Vancouver designer Jamie Banfield are helping us cook up a 

kitchen renovation with expert tips for cooking and design for the kitchen. 

We know so many homeowners are utilizing their kitchens more than 

ever. If you’re looking to up your kitchen game, take it straight from the 

source of all our foodie inspiration: MasterChef season 7 champion Shaun 

O’Neale. It’s now time to start utilizing your new professional kitchen in 

a skillful way. Shaun suggests perfecting two “simple” dishes: “Two dishes 

I think everyone should know are a perfectly roasted chicken, and a 

perfectly cooked medium rare steak.” He also advises not to be afraid of 

heat! “The biggest difference in home cooking and professional kitchens 

are fires and plating. In professional kitchens we are not afraid of cooking 

over the highest heat possible because we have to get the plates out 

the door. I feel like a lot of home cooks are afraid to crank up the heat,” 

notices O’Neale. “As far as creating restaurant type dishes at home, I 

would say take the time to present the food in an artistic way, it is very 

true that we eat with our eyes first so if the food looks delicious it will 

taste that much better.” 

We can’t wait to taste what the MasterChef will be cooking up on the 

Home + Garden stage this year. Perhaps his favourites from his book? “I 

really love the Bourbon Braised Short Rib Ravioli and the at home dry 

aged ribeye!” As for Jamie, he’ll be dishing out his best design tips for 

homeowners this season. The only way you’ll catch him on our kitchen 

stage? “If Shaun’s making a risotto you’ll find me front row!” For more tips

“People love food, being nosy and socializing,” says Banfield. “The kitchen 

incorporates all these aspects and much more. We are seeing trends in 

the space being used for multiple cooks at the same time, meal prepping 

and just good ol’ entertaining.” When it comes to kitchen design, one 

thing is for sure: open concepts are here to stay. “Open concept living is 

so popular,” notices Jamie. “The way we use our homes is transforming 

and spaces are evolving to be multi-functional. We want a kitchen that we 

can be functional as a cook but can also serve as a space for an intimate 

Saturday dinner party. It also doubles as a space for the kids to do 

homework or for young professionals to get a bit of work done.” 

With the growing trend with people wanting to eat healthier, cook their 

own meals and supporting local foods, the kitchen has become even 

more important for the everyday home cook. “With this massive trend in 

home cooking, professional kitchens in the home are skyrocketing,” says 

Jamie. “We are seeing technology such as steam ovens, interior kitchen 

herb gardens and even fridges dedicated to herbs and edible plants.” The 

inspiration Jamie says, comes from online. “It’s becoming so easy to be 

inspired by all these amazing cooking shows like MasterChef, online food 

bloggers and recipes from YouTube.” He concludes, “we’re eating up all 

the elements of these trends and I’m loving how kitchens are evolving.”

Security cameras provide a means for its owner to watch over his

chooses. This type of system is a great deterrent to thievery and 

unwanted entry. Most organizations that have sensitive items or 

are off limits to the general public employ these cameras to help 

keep their places safe. 

Purchasing and implementing such a system may save your 

business from the terrors of illegal entry. Investment in such 

could save you a whole lot of trouble. Before purchasing a system, 

you will want to consider the following factors. 

Study your needs. The type of security measures installed will 

depend on your specific security needs. For example how large 

is the area you would like covered? How many cameras will it 

take to monitor this area? You must make sure the security camera 

system you will purchase can accommodate enough slots for 

expansion. 

Do you need audio too? Some camera systems have audio 

recording equipment as well so you can not only see what 

happens, but hear it as well. This is important in cases when you

would like everything documented. However, this may be costly. 

Many establishments only require video records of their security. 

Also, you must ascertain whether you need to have your security 

cameras record in color or black and white. Color cameras are, of 

course, more sophisticated and show a clearer picture. However, 

they tend to be pricey. Color cameras might also not work in 

low-light situations. 

Consider the location of the cameras. Will the location be hard to 

set up a wiring system in? In that case, you may want to consider 

wireless security camera systems. However, these cameras 

must be in a place that is conducive to high quality broadcast. 

There must be no interference. They can, though, be moved 

around the area. They are a bit more flexible than their fixed-wire 

cousins. 

Will the camera system be for outdoor purposes? Cameras that 

monitor outdoor locations need special weatherproof housings 

and may not be recommended for extreme temperatures and 

various elements. Also those that may be vandalized must be 

protected against such. Also, you must take in consideration the 

lighting for an area. If your camera cannot record a scene due to 

bad lighting, you will end up with muddy images that won’t help 

in your surveillance activities. Choose a security camera that has 

a good sensitivity to light. Also, try to illuminate such areas with 

external lighting. You must consider where the power sources 

will be located. Make sure they are well protected against the 

elements and from tampering. 

Consider the available methods for recording the images. You 

may use a variety of backup media. And with the advent of computer 

storage media, even the use of hard disks, compact discs, 

and DVDs can prove to be an inexpensive way to store your data. 

Most home security cameras require little wiring, but installation 

differs according to model. Here are the basic steps: 

• Survey the area to be monitored. Follow the instructions/ 

manual that comes with your security camera product. Install 

the camera at a proper distance from the area to be surveyed. 

Cameras vary in the distances from which they focus, 

so it would do well to pay notice to such. 

• Secure the camera using proper mounts, etc. Make sure that 

if the camera you are to install should not be moved, its placing 

should be secure and tamper proof. 

• Connect the camera to the monitor according to the manufacturer’s 

directions. Make sure the wiring is as hidden and 

as secure as possible. This will make it harder for vandals and 

thieves from damaging your wiring. 

• Fine tune your system. Make sure you optimize the images 

you receive from the camera. Set a maintenance plan and fail 

safe plans to employ in case your cameras break down. 

• Organize an archival system according to your needs. Backing 

up and recording your images are implemented here.

Home Painting Tips 

Remember, everyone starts as a beginner at painting. Just because you have never painted a house doesn’t mean 

you shouldn’t give it a try. The money you save by painting your own house is money you can put into other home 

improvements. It can also be a fun thing for the whole family to do. 

Here are some of the basics. Of course the first thing you need to do is wash down the walls of your house. A pressure 

washer can be rented at almost any rental yard and is the best way to do that. Now go around with a scraper 

and remove all loose paint and chipped areas. You don’t have to scrape the entire wall, but any areas where the 

surface is not flat can cause you problems as you paint your house. Next, figure out your square footage so you 

can determine the amount of paint you will need to buy. Buy your paint in 5-gallon pails, rather than gallons to 

save more money. 

Talk to the helper at your local paint store and tell him about your project. They can help you decide on how many 

brushes and rollers and other items you will need. You can buy natural or synthetic bristles for oil based paints, but 

only use synthetic bristles with latex paint. The same rule applies to rollers. Make sure you purchased some painter’s 

tape. It’s blue tape that comes in different widths and is easy to remove without messing up your paint job. 

That brings us to preparation. Tape off all areas you don’t wish to get this color of paint on. If there are large areas 

to cover, make sure you pick up some rolls of plastic. You can tape the edges of the plastic down over whatever 

you need to cover.

Don’t paint out of the paint cans. First reason is that 

leaving the paint can open will dry out the paint and 

make it difficult to apply. Another reason is that your 

brush or roller picks up dirt and foreign objects, which 

will end up in your paint and may even change the color 

as you go along. Do all of your cutting or trimming 

in before you paint the walls. Use a 4″ brush and with 

a smooth stroke guide it around the edges where you 

taped off. Make sure you have plenty of paint on your 

brush. The biggest mistake people make is trying to 

stretch the paint too far. Keep drips cleaned up as you 

go with a small rag. Remember you will be rolling up 

to the edge of your cut, so don’t worry about that, just 

make sure you cover the edges well. 

Start on the edges of your walls and work your way 

toward the middle. Most people don’t do this and problems 

can result. If you start and new can of paint in the 

middle of the wall and there is any difference in the color 

at all, it will show up there more than it would on the 

edges. So with each new can of paint you open, start at 

the edges first. Dip your roller in water (for Latex) or solvent 

(for oil-based paint), before you start. Whether you 

use a pan or a 5-gallon bucket with a screen, make sure 

you roll it out a little to make sure it isn’t dripping. You 

don’t need to go all the way from the top to the bottom 

as you paint. Do what you can reach. 

Apply the paint in a Y or an N pattern, then apply paint 

in columns up and down smoothing out all the edges 

or ridges as you go. Again don’t try to stretch the paint 

out, make sure you have enough paint on your roller to 

give it a good coat. If you are applying more than one 

coat, make sure the first coat is completely dry before 

applying a new coat of paint. Corners are a difficult part 

to learn to paint. If you aren’t careful, this is where you 

will see paint drips later. Get as close to corners as you 

can, but don’t scrape the roller against the corner. That 

will cause drips. If you are unsure, have a paintbrush 

handy to smooth out drips. That is also a good idea 

overall. Keep a paintbrush ready for taking care of any 

drips or ridges you leave behind. Doing this as you go is 

much easier than trying to fix it after it’s dry or partially 

dry. 

Using tray liners for your paint trays will save you a lot 

of time at cleanup. Soak your brushes when done for 

awhile and they will also be easier to clean. For water 

based paint, soak in water and for oil based paint soak 

them in solvent.

For Your Home 

When was the last time your home had an electrical 

checkup? 

The wonderful weather of Summer presents the 

easy opportunity to request that an electrician visit 

and have your home’s electrical system thoroughly 

checked. Similar to the way we as people go to the 

doctor for a physical, a home’s electrical system 

should receive annual or semi-annual inspections. 

The main reasons we would do this are to protect 

the longevity of the house, protect the inhabitant’s 

well being and maintain the best efficiency – 

which can save you money on your energy bill. 

Throughout the year as electrical devices in the 

home wear and tear, make a list and store it in an 

accessible place. The more work that can be done 

in one visit by an electrician, the more you will 

save versus paying for several visits. Most electrical 

problems should only be handled by a professional. 

This is mainly due to the safety risk involved as 

well as any job not done correctly can cost time 

and money in the future if not up to code. Once 

you have enough items on your list to take action, 

review the home for any other electrical problems 

that may have been overlooked. 

This is also a great time to do an evaluation of 

your electrical usage needs. Do you or your family 

need more power in the home? If so, include that 

on the list and ask the electrician if an upgrade is 

available. Finally, in preparing for your checkup, it 

may also be appropriate to determine if your home 

could use money saving electrical fixture upgrades. 

For example, you may want to upgrade frequently 

used rooms from common incandescent lights 

to fluorescent ones. This will reduce the electrical 

consumption and lower your energy bill. 

The next step is to request an estimate and evaluate 

the electrician. To contact electricians many

to request a free estimate from, without the fear 

of having to field dozens of sales calls from contractors 

they didn’t select.

hand the decision to the homeowner. Many other 

contractor referral sites sell a person’s contact info 

to several contractors and this leads to them being 

pushed by too many salespeople. Our website 

opens the opportunity for the more professional, 

consultative approach from the contractor to the

Using a site like this can allow you to choose one 

or more local electricians that appear to be a 

good fit for you and your job. Once you have the 

chance to speak to the contractor you can ask 

more qualifying questions. What might you want 

to ask when chatting with an electrical contractor? 

* Number of years of experience 

* Types of specialty 

* Type of charge: by the job or by the hour 

* “Ballpark estimate” for your job 

Depending on your job, the best rate may not be 

the best fit. This often correlates with experience, 

and that is a matter of your personal preference. 

Finally, once the job is set up, prepare for the electrician’s 

visit. Be sure to clear all work areas of any 

fragile items, home decorations and furnishings. It 

is also necessary to make sure that the panel box 

is clear and ready to be accessed. This will save the 

electrician time, which means you save money. 

Once the visit is complete you can rest assured 

that your home’s electrical safety has been optimized 

and you will be operating at an efficient 

level.
