ARE YOU INTO LABELS? IF SO, WHAT IS YOUR BRAND OF CHOICE? Yes. I am into labels but not loyal towards any singular brand. I particularly like: Zara Adidas Originals Pull and Bear Under Armor Gucci Bachelors Hermes Emporio Armani Under Armor Calvin Klein GROOMING SEEMS TO BE A BIG PART OF YOUR ROUTINE. SHARE 3 IMPORTANT STEPS IN THE GROOMING PROCESS Well, there are more than 3 steps that I follow to stay groomed, from staying fit by working out to following hygienic methods. Three important steps in my daily grooming process would be: 1- Shower, spraying on deodorant followed by a small amount of cologne 2- Tying my turban with perfection and making sure it looks fresh and neat 3- Brushing and grooming my beard WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT FASHION IN DUBAI? Dubai has no doubt stepped up its fashion game by having fashion-forward initiatives to promote local talent in the region. The Arab Fashion Week was developed to showcase international talent by bringing designers from Europe and beyond. With tourism numbers thriving, Dubai’s fashion industry is in a growth period. And with its big ideas of becoming a globally recognised fashion city, there’s no reason why Dubai can’t crack that fashion barrier and be listed with the likes of London, Paris and New York as a key fashion city in the future. IT IS NOT ALWAYS EASY TO “LOOK DIFFERENT” IN TODAY’S SOCIETY. HOW DO YOU INSPIRE SOMEONE WHO HAS NOT REACHED YOUR LEVEL OF CONFIDENCE? For most of my life growing up, the fear of what other people thought of me, being raised in a town where people like me (Sikh) were not common, had kept me trapped. I feared going out. At my lowest point, even walking down the street became a struggle because my mind would run wild with images of people talking about and laughing at me as I went by. I lived a half-life, being harassed, bullied and teased for my appearance. I knew I was missing out. I also knew I had so much more to contribute to this world. But I was so conscious and trapped in the fear that if I put myself out there, I’d be ridiculed and rejected. I couldn’t bring myself to perform, host, dance, meet new people, be out there in public, fearing that people would point towards me and laugh. Having two or more people staring, judging me on the basis of my appearance, scared me. The fear of what other people think of us is like a cage. Over time, you become so used to being inside that cage you eventually come to forget what the outside might be like. You resign yourself to living within its walls. Freedom from the fear of what others think is possible. By stepping up your fashion, carrying your outfit with your personality will boost up your confidence in facing the world and will help you overcome the fear of what others think of you. You will slowly regain your freedom and escape from the confines of the prison you’ve created for yourself and live outside that cage. “People will stare. Make it worth their while” is the quote that always got me going. I have never let my identity and my turban stop me from being creative with my fashion sense. In fact, wearing a turban always compliments my outfit. Men with turbans can be just as fashionable as anyone else. It’s pretty awesome! I did it and I am sure you can too. If you are one of those people who are going through the same, believe in yourself, be out there, be outspoken. Y’all beautiful, y’all humans. You might look 7
different, dress differently but hey! It’s good to be different. Overcome fear and face the world. ACHIEVEMENTS ON A BIG SCALE called “Sikh chic” and was featured in a hugely successful exhibition of evocative photographs by Amit and Naroop called the ‘The Singh Project.’ Featured in SinghStreetStyle blog. In 2014, I got the opportunity to be featured with Pradeep Singh Bahra (known as The Turbaned Fashion Blogger) and The Sikh Sartorialist (the one in the middle). His work has been featured in Vogue, GQ, Time Magazine, Times of India, The Guardian, MTV and New York Daily. And he recently became an instantly recognisable face after appearing in a national advertising campaign for Samsung called ‘Shadwell Chic.’ Pradeep became the first Singh to be the face of a national campaign for a global firm and it propelled the turban centre stage. Pardeep also won the Sikh Awards for 2014 for highlighting the fashion appeal of the Sikh style, catchily A small piece of advice to people aiming to enhance their creative skills would be – “Always listen to your gut feeling and go about gathering the right resources, be it in the form of contacts or related information in pursuing your goal. If you’re really interested in reaching your goals, laziness and a laid back attitude are your biggest enemies. Change the way you look at things and the things you look at, change.
