AD fires
Hall of Fame
By Anne Marie Tobin
PEABODY — Peabody
High boys hockey coach Mark
Leonard has been fired.
A few short months ago,
Leonard was at the pinnacle
of his career when he was inducted
into the Peabody High
School Athletic Hall of Fame
last November.
All that changed last week
when he was informed by
Peabody athletic director Bob
Bua that he was out.
“I was hoping to ride the
wave through one more down
year when some of talent from
the youth program comes up,”
said Leonard, the winningest
hockey coach in Peabody history.
“I’m so disappointed, as I
thought that I would have had
more support after so many
coach
years. But nobody had my
back. That someone who put
his heart and soul into Peabody
athletics can be treated this
way is sad, but after what happened
to Tony (O’Donnell) and
Butch (Melanaphy) last year, I
shouldn’t be surprised. It’s not
right to treat people who have
given so many years only to be
tossed aside because of parents’
complaints. But that’s what is
happening in Peabody the last
couple of years. Parents complain
and their solution is get
rid of the coach.”
The Peabody coaching situation
has been in a state of flux.
O’Donnell was in his 18th year
with the boys lacrosse team
(seventh as head coach), when
he abruptly resigned a few days
A new vision for Veterans Memorial High
By Thomas Grillo
The city has taken the first
step to replace its 48-year-old
high school.
“I was a student at Veterans
Memorial High School when
it was built in 1971 and it was
the city’s crown jewel,” said
School Committee member
Beverley Ann Griffin Dunne.
“It’s not anymore and must be
replaced.”
The seven-member panel
voted unanimously last week
to submit an application for
funding to the Massachusetts
School Building Authority
(MSBA). The quasi-independent
state agency funds a portion
of the construction and
renovation of public schools.
If approved, the school could
open as early as September
2022.
While many details have to
be worked out, the new facility
would be built on the school’s
50-acre campus on Lowell
Street.
But there’s no guarantee the
new school will be funded.
Competition is fierce as communities
scramble to replace
outdated and overcrowded
schools. Last year, MSBA approved
only a dozen of the 70
requests to fund new schools
or major renovations. The
agency plans to distribute $575
million for the latest round of
applications.
MARCH 21, 2019
A new vision for Veterans Memorial High
VISION
From page 1
The MSBA is funded by collecting
one penny of the state’s
6.25 percent sales tax, nearly
$900 million last year. Since its
inception in 2004, the agency has
given $13.6 billion in reimbursements
to municipalities and regional
school districts for school
construction projects.
The next step is City Council
approval, which is expected to be
unanimous on Thursday, March
28. The MSBA application deadline
is April 12.
It’s not known yet what a new
high school would cost, but it’s a
big ticket item.
Last month, MSBA approved
design of a 418,000-square-foot
high school in Waltham for 1,830
students for $310 million.
Belmont is in the planning
stages for a 410,000-square-foot
multi-story building to house
more than 2,000 students at a
cost of $310 million. A new
Somerville High School is under
construction on a hill behind the
existing school for $257 million.
Costs have risen dramatically
since the controversial Newton
North High School was built in
2000 for nearly $200 million.
At the time, critics called it the
Taj Mahal of school building
projects.
Still, communities are not on
the hook for the entire amount.
If MSBA gives the green light
to Peabody, the agency would
cover up to 56 percent of the cost.
Typically, the city would borrow
the money and pay it back over
10-30 years.
But the price tag does not dissuade
Griffin Dunne.
“I see what needs to be done,”
she said. “It’s frustrating to fix
a leaky roof in one section of
the building only to see a leak
spring in another section of the
building.”
Peabody has some experience
securing MSBA funding and
building new schools.
In 2013, the city was awarded
$43.6 million for the new J. Henry
Higgins Middle School, or nearly
47 percent of the $93 million
school. The 221,518-square-foot
facility was built to serve 1,340
students in grades six through
eight. It replaced the 50-year-old
school that suffered from deficiencies
in major building systems,
including mechanical, electrical,
heating and the roof.
Mayor Edward A. Bettencourt
Jr. did not return a call seeking
comment.
The mayor made construction
of a new high school a priority
in his State of the City address in
January.
Despite recent improvements,
the mayor said the school will
require millions of dollars to
maintain. Decisions will have to
be made whether school should
be renovated or built new, he said
at the time. The administration is
leaning toward a new building.
Can you hear me now
in South Peabody
By Thomas Grillo
A Land Court judge has been
asked to clear the way for Verizon
Wireless to build a cell tower
in Peabody.
A team of lawyers for the telecommunications
giant sought
Judge Jennifer Roberts’ approval
last week to end 5-year-old court
battle.
At issue is the City Council’s
opposition to a proposed tower
on Lynn Street and the rejection
of an alternate site on Coolidge
Avenue.
Under the federal Telecommunications
Act of 1966, municipalities
have little authority to
prohibit towers. Verizon and the
city have agreed there’s a service
gap in south Peabody, but that’s
where the consensus ends.
In 2014, Verizon sought permission
to construct a 60-foot
tower behind Michael’s Limousine
on Lynn Street. The City
Council rejected that proposal,
saying a tower does not belong
in a residential neighborhood.
Verizon then filed the first of two
lawsuits.
The city and Verizon later
agreed on a new site at the rear
of the Coolidge Avenue Water
Treatment Plant. While that location
for a 120-foot tower on
public land was approved by
the council in 2014, the municipal
election the following year
changed the membership of the
panel. The new board rejected
that spot as well. Verizon then
filed its second lawsuit.
The city then asked the Peabody
Municipal Light Plant
(PMLP) to install 5G technology,
the newest genesis of broadband
connection, on light poles.
While that solution was acceptable
to Verizon, the price tag of
$750,000 killed the deal.
Still, there’s a chance a deal
could be worked out, according
to Charles Orphanos, PMLP’s
manager.
“We continue to go back and
forth,” he said.
Michael Murphy, a Verizon
spokesman, said in a statement
the company is continuing to
work with interested parties,
including the city, to identify a
solution to address the service
needs of residents.
The judge took the arguments
under advisement. A verdict is
expected this spring.
Aspire gives Peabody family cause to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day
COURTESY PHOTO
Nadia Lincoln was diagnosed with Down Syndrome.
She receives occupational, physical and speech
therapy from Aspire.
When a prenatal exam delivered
a diagnosis of Down Syndrome
for their unborn child,
Semra Lincoln and her husband,
Richard, were given an option that
they never really seriously considered.
“The doctors at Mass. General
(Hospital) gave us the option to
terminate (the pregnancy),” Semra
Lincoln said, “but we knew that
our faith in God would help us get
through it.”
Now that Nadia, who will turn
three in May, is a happy, walking,
talking child, the Lincolns can’t
imagine what life would have
been like without her.
“God knew what he was doing,”
Semra said. “She is the best
thing to ever happen to us. She has
given us so much joy.”
The Lincolns are amazed at the
progress Nadia has made and, as
the world celebrates Down Syndrome
Day Thursday, they are
grateful for the Early Intervention
supports provided by a team of
therapists from Aspire Developmental
Services.
Nadia receives occupational,
physical and speech therapy from
Aspire, with case manager Kristen
Evans coordinating the services.
“Aspire has given us all the
services we needed, more than
we could have expected,” Semra
said. “We got lucky when we
got Kristen Evans. Four different
people come to our house every
week. They all work together to
do what’s best for Nadia.”
Nadia also gets hippotherapy,
takes swim lessons and learned
signed language at the Beverly
School for the Deaf. She is speaking
words in English and German
DRUGS THAT MAY REDUCE PARKINSON’S RISK
Based on previous research suggesting that people with autoimmune
diseases had a lower risk of developing Parkinson’s disease,
researchers embarked on a new study to explore any potential link
between drugs that suppress the immune system and a Parkinson’s
disease diagnosis. After comparing immune-suppressing drug usage
for more than 48,000 people with newly diagnosed Parkinson’s
disease against a control group of more than 52,000 individuals with
no Parkinson’s diagnosis, researchers found a substantially lower risk
of developing Parkinson’s disease among those who used two
categories of immune-suppressing drugs, corticosteroids and inosine
monophosphate dehydrogenase inhibitors. Four other categories of
immune-suppressing drugs did not show as much change in risk.
More research is needed to better understand the link.
Your pharmacist is qualified to manage the complex medication
regimens of patients with Parkinson’s disease by not only addressing
motor and non-motor symptoms but also managing diabetes or
hypertension, which may coexist with Parkinson’s disease. To learn
more, please call VILLAGE PHARMACY at 781-334-3133. We feature
ComputerRX for online refills and Parata Pas packaging system which
allows us to customize the dispensing of your medications. Our
pharmacy is located in the Colonial Shopping Center.
HINT: Immune-suppressing drugs include those that fight inflammation
and help the body accept donor organs.
WEEKLYNEWS.NET - 978-532-5880 MARCH 21, 2019
Obituary
Michael J. Tomich, 96
LYNNFIELD — Michael
J. Tomich, of Lynnfield,
passed away peacefully
on March 13, 2019, at
the age of 96. Born in
New York City, he was the
son of the late John M.
Tomich and Mary (Chantala)
Tomich, immigrants
from Eastern Europe
looking for a better life for their
children. Michael was in aviation
school as WWII started, and
served his country proudly as a
Staff Sergeant airplane mechanic
stationed in Northern Africa. After
the war, he earned his Bachelor’s
degree from NYU under the GI Bill
of Rights and began a 50 year
career as an engineer at General
Electric. In 1955, he married
Helen, the love of his life, and in
1958 they moved to Lynnfield
to raise their family. He worked
tirelessly, receiving numerous supervisory
promotions, and was
credited for the invention of a
system to contain broken turbine
blades in the event of a jet engine
failure. As a member of the
self-sufficient “Greatest Generation,”
he performed almost every
home and car repair project, with
meticulous precision. As a good
neighbor, he generously gave of
himself with his expertise, tools,
and time. As a good father and
grandfather, he gave his love and
support, and delighted in the
successes and achievements of
his family. As a good husband,
he showed his love for his wife in
ways too numerous to count. He
had a passion for square dancing,
opera, and symphonies, and
took great pride in his lawn and
his shrubs. He waged daily war
with the dandelions and squirrels
who threatened his property.
After retirement at the age of 75,
he relished his regular meetings
with his GE “old timers”
groups. His resiliency
was near legendary, as
he bounced back from
many medical aliments
over his final 21 years,
including falling off the
roof at age 88 while trying
to clear the gutters.
He was a testimony to
the power of exercise, good nutrition,
and clean living. He cherished
60 years of marriage to Helen,
who worked to the age of 90.
He would greet her at their front
door with his signature daiquiri
when she returned home. After
her passing, Michael’s children
and grandchildren treasured their
time with him, knowing that every
moment with him was a gift.
He leaves behind John M. Tomich
and wife Susan of Lynnfield,
Carol-Ann Sullivan and her
husband Joseph of Peabody, and
Paul S. Tomich and his wife Lisa
Stevenson of Brookline. He is
also survived by his four grandchildren,
David and his wife
Claire of Cambridge, MA, Theresa
Sullivan of Niskayuna, NY, Jennifer
Tomich of Brookline MA, and
Daniel Sullivan of Peabody, MA.
He was predeceased by his wife,
Helen (Blitvich) Tomich.
Service information: Funeral
on defense.”
head coach, beginning in 1995,
after two years as an assistant.
In 501 games (including 24
tournament games) he posted
a 228-233-40 record. Under
Leonard, who won three Coach
of the Year awards, Peabody
captured six league titles.
In no time, he turned
Peabody into powerhouse program,
winning four straight
Greater Boston League titles
starting in 2000. During that
span, Leonard led the Tanners
to their first tournament berth
in 19 years and had a run of
10 straight winning seasons
from 200-2011. His best season
was 2009-2010 when the team
won a record 18 games, won a
Northeast Conference championship
and reached the finals
of the Division 2 North tournament
for the first time in program
history.
After qualifying for the tournament
in 2014-2015 (and winning
a tourney game against
Danvers), the Tanners fell on
hard times the next three years,
going a combined 4-52-4.
“From 98-99 through 2010
we were a Top-5 team with great
teams and players, but every
program has down years,” said
Leonard.
“Anyone who knows anything
about Peabody hockey knew
three years ago that the next four
years we would not have the
talent. We knew we had a weak
group. I even brought up the idea
of merging with the Lynn program,
which was in the same boat
as us with no talent coming in for
the next two years.”
At Peabody High, Leonard
was an all-star stand out in
soccer, hockey and baseball.
A two-time North Shore
Hockey Player of the Year, he
played four years at UConn, garnering
Rookie of the Year honors
and setting a program record for
most points scored as a freshman.
He played professionally
in the European Hockey
Federation, twice leading the
league in scoring.
As far as the reasons behind his
dismissal go, Leonard, currently
president of Peabody Youth
Hockey, said Bua cited multiple
factors leading to the decision.
“I was told by the athletic director
that parents complained
that I was being too negative,
but we had kids who had no
interest in working,” Leonard
said.
“He (Bua) said the program
was losing kids and that kids
threatened to quit if I came
back, but kids always say that.
I didn’t have one kid quit the
team in the last three years.
He said the losing games was
another reason. I thought high
school athletics was supposed
to be more than winning games.
“I was not supported by the
AD when it involved issues or
suspensions that were meant to
send a message that I would not
tolerate certain off-ice behavior
by my players.”
On Monday, Bua said the
decision to let Leonard go was
not an easy one but, “it’s a personnel
issue and I can’t really
discuss it any further.”
