Naturally, volatile markets can cause panic, especially when we see the value of our investments falling. But this is not the time to panic nor the time to make emotional decisions. No one can be certain about what markets will do in the future or what returns will be like for various asset classes (property, equity, bonds and cash), but what one can be certain of is that volatility is perennial. In these uncertain times, investors are faced with a very important decision – whether to stay invested in the markets and bear the brunt of the tough economic climate, or whether to switch to cash. Market timing is practically impossible Stiglingh said that according to Glacier by Sanlam, one should remember that cash diminishes an i n v e st o r ’s purchasing power once taxes and inflation are taken into account. Also, investors wanting to switch their investments to cash will need to get the market timing right – something not even investment professionals can claim to get right all of the time. When trying to time the market, the investor has to be correct twice ? once when to switch into cash, and then again when to switch back into growth assets. Getting it wrong could cost you Because it’s practically impossible to predict when to switch, it is highly likely that investors will miss some of the best days in the market. Missing even a few of the best days could have a lasting impact on your portfolio returns. Growth assets outperform over the long term Figures from Glacier’s research team show that SA cash has only outperformed SA equity and SA bonds once over the period 2001 to 2018. What should investors do? ý Don’t try to time the market. ý Don’t make emotional decisions based on short-term uncertainty. ý Remember that, on average, growth assets will provide a better return over the long term (a minimum of five years, ideally 10). ý Understand your long-term investment plan … and stick to it. ý Be disciplined and stay i n v e st e d . ý Enlist the advice and assistance of a licensed financial adviser to co-create an investment plan that is underpinned by your financial needs and risk appetite. The Bureau for Economic Research and Lightstone Properties have recently brought out research on business in general and on the property market, which makes interesting reading. Although I am not an economist I am interested in trying to understand economic research reports which take the emotion out of markets and focus on what is actually happening in the various markets. Having said this, the Bureau for Economic Research does base their findings on surveys they carry out and these are completed by people who may have some emotional bias. In summary the news is: 1. Business confidence is down but not as much as it was in the last quarter; 2. Rental growth is slow; 3. While the volume of sales in the Eastern Cape have increased at 10.4% sales values have only increased by 6.5% which would indicate that house prices are declining; 4. Building plans passed this quarter have declined, and on a more positive note; 5. The CPI (inflation index) is under control at around 5%. These statistics are general and do not apply uniformly in all markets. Our experience is that in Grahamstown the market is particularly weak as a result of a failing municipality. In Port Alfred we are seeing increased activity but without much movement in prices. This surprises me as Port Alfred has so many attractions: the sea, the river, a flying school, marina and golf course just to mention a few. If I was a betting man I would say that Port Alfred offers the best value in the region! Kenton seems to be bucking the trend with prices in desired areas reaching record heights and there is a lot of building activity. Boesmansriviermond, Boknes, Cannon Rocks and Alexandria are also showing growth. Naturally at election time we are all uncertain of how the election will impact on our lives. I must say I have a very good feeling about these elections and think that while we may have a bumpy road leading up to the elections and after them while parties jockey for coalition positions, this will be the start of a new and positive era for our country. There is certainly no resemblance now. The photo this week was from about the 1940s m ay b e . The entire area has changed in structure to suit modern usage. I remember when I came to live here, there was a concrete composition, nearer to the right hand side bank, which I was told, had once been the customs house. Another structure that has changed is the stone wall to hold off the sea sand. There are photographs in the museum, showing a very steep sand bank. Serenity is one year old As we celebrate our first birthday, we find ourselves looking back at some of our highlights, but also looking forward at what we hope to achieve in the future.
