THE NATIONAL
PONY SOCIETY
The National Pony Society Summer
Championship Show is the highlight
of the society’s year, with horses
and ponies qualifying from all round
the country to contest the National
Finals, held over three days in early
August.
At first glance there may not be an
obvious link between sport and the
Summer Championship show ring. But
correct functional conformation and
good riding type have led to the British
Riding Pony becoming an important
source of blood for the continental
pony studbooks and for successful show
animals to go on to compete in sport
themselves.
One of the most prestigious
championships at the show is the
Ottergayle, for Hacks and Riding
Horses. The 2018 champion Riding
Horse, the NPS licensed stallion Tiger
Attack, has three times been successful
in the Ottergayle Supreme. When he
is not in the show ring, Tiger Attack is
starting to make an impact in sport.
He qualified for the Burghley Young
Event Horse Final in 2017 and already
has 52 Foundation Points with British
Eventing. Tiger Attack also sired two
other Champions at the show, the Show
Hunter Pony Breeding Champion Dibynn
Status Symbol and the Ottergayle
Reserve Champion Hack Ecclesbourne
Shark Bay.
There is a very strong connection
between the British Riding Pony breed
and the German Riding Pony, with the
German studbook heavily influenced by
imported British blood.
For example this year’s Open Show
Pony Broodmare Champion was the
seven year old mare Stanley Grange
Regal Joy. She is a product of the
very important Twylands Troubadour
sireline. Troubador is probably best
known in NPS circles as the sire of the
great Strinesdale Matador, who was
awarded the NPS Stallion Award on
multiple occasions.
However in Germany Troubador
also had a significant influence. For
example his granddaughter Rosepark
Prelude is a registered British Riding
Pony who was exported to Germany
where she became an Elite mare
and produced the Pony European
Silver Medalist Basalt K, a number
of Bundeschampionate finalists,
State Premium mares and a licensed
stallion. Her daughter Raffaela K was
German Mare Show Champion and has
produced a number of good offspring
including the dual Bundeschampion
and international dressage pony Casino
Royale K.
Another pony whose family diversifies
into sport is this year’s 128cm Show
Pony Youngstock Champion Sandboro
Princess Royal. This 3 year old filly
carries the blood of Troubador on her
dam’s side but descends from the sire
line of Westacre Concerto. Concerto
is also the grandsire of the top 128cm
jumping pony Kilcreene Apollo and
is close up in the pedigree of other
international jumping ponies.
For aspiring sport pony breeders and
riders, the Summer Championship
continues to be an excellent shop
window for foundation stock bred to be
a ridden pony.
