I don’t know
how banking
innovations
got into my
head
— Balogun,
founder, FCMB
By Akoma Chinweoke
Otunba
Michael
Olasubomi Balogun,
founder of FCMB
Group and Olori Omooba
of Ijebuland, has attributed
his outstanding
success story in life and the
country’s banking sector in
particular to divine intervention,
insisting that he
just could not explain how
great banking innovations
got into his head.
The business icon, who
disclosed this in Lagos in
an interview, said he was
still amazed at his achievements
and would remain
grateful to God for making
him strong and articulate
even age 85 plus, adding
that, day-after-day,
there was a strong conviction
that he had a duty to
devote the rest of his life to
service of God, and always
do things that add significant
value to humanity.
Speaking on how he became
successful , the Olori
Omo-oba of Ijebuland, who
has reached an altitude in
life that is continuously
shaping his attitude of gratitude
to God, had this to
say:
“This is what made me,
in addition to divine intervention.
At a point in time,
the government of this
country decided to set up
indigenization whereby all
foreigners would sell their
shares to Nigerians, 40
percent, 60 percent or the
whole and we required an
issuing house to do it at
the Stock Exchange. I had
gained some fame in selling
UAC. “
NUC unveils governance structure
for private varsities
•Ade-Ojo gives 2 graduates N5m
to start business
By Dayo Johnson, Akure
THE National Uni
versities Commission
(NUC) says it has developed
a blueprint for
the rapid revitalization of
university education in
the country for the years
2019 – 2023. Its Executive
Secretary, Prof. Abubakar
Rasheed, disclosed
this during the 3rd convocation
ceremony of
Elizade University, Ilara-
Mokin, Ondo State
“The development of
the blueprint was thought
on an extensive multistakeholder
base and inputs
were sought from
students, parents, teaching
and non-teaching,
Vice-Chancellors and
other stakeholders”, Rasheed
said.
“Data were gathered to
determine our rank and
challenges faced in the
system in this time, as
well as to seek practicable
and sustainable solutions
to the challenges
Nine Nigerians arrested in
US for $3.5m wire fraud
*Two in trouble over bitcom scam
Nine Nigerians have
been arrested in the
United States (US) for defrauding
individuals and
businesses of more than
$3.5 million.
Geoffrey S. Berman, the
United States attorney for
the southern district of New
York, and James C. Spero,
special agent in charge of
the Tampa, Florida, field
office of U.S. immigration
and customs enforcement’s
Homeland security investigations
(“HSI”), disclosed
this in a statement on
Thursday.
The suspects are Oluwaseun
Adelekan, Olalekan
Daramola, Solomon Aburekhanlen,
Gbenga Oyeneyin,
Abiola Olajumoke,
Temitope Omotayo, Bryan
Eadie, Albert Lucas and
Ademola Adebogun.
The US officials said the
suspects committed the
fraud through business
and the cost implication for
the solution”. Speaking
on the challenges of governance
in private universities,
the NUC ES said,
“The Commission has also
produced the board of corporate
governance for private
universities to guide
the Proprietors, the Board
of Trustees, Governing
Council and management.
“The document clearly
delineates the role of each
level of governance structure
to improve university
governance in Nigeria”.
He lauded Elizade University
for grooming the
graduates “into potential
experts, future leaders and
next-generation solution
providers in various sectors
of our national life”.
The Vice Chancellor of
the institution, Prof Olukayode
Amund, who said
131 students from four faculties
graduated, noted that
the university lays emphasis
on character moulding.
“Our emphasis is to produce
graduates that would
email compromises, a Russian
oil scam, and a romance
scam.
“As alleged, these defendants
deployed three
different email schemes to
defraud their victims.
The common denominator
in all three schemes was
the defendants’ alleged
fleecing of their victims
through fictitious online
identities,” said Berman.
“The schemes allegedly
earned the defendants $3.5
million – and also arrests
on federal felony charges.”
The defendants are accused
of participating in a
scheme to defraud businesses
and individuals
through several categories
of false and misleading
representations.
They are each charged in
the indictment with one
count of conspiring to
commit wire fraud and
each defendant faces a
positively affect the society
when they occupy high
public offices or political
positions in future or as
captains of industry or
commerce in the private
sector”, Amund said.
The founder of the University,
Chief Micheal Ade-
Ojo, admonished the new
graduates to go and excel
in the chosen careers even
as he gave N5m to two of
them to start a joint business.
18 of the new graduates
had first class, 73 second
class upper division,
35 second class lower division
and five third class.
maximum potential sentence
of 20 years in prison.
In a related development,
two Nigerians are in
trouble in the US after being
indicted by prosecutors
for running a fraudulent
bitcoin investment
scheme.
Onwuemerie Ogor Gift
and Kelvin Usifoh were
charged by Oregon District
Attorney’s Office with 11
counts of wire fraud, as
well as conspiracy to commit
wire fraud and money
laundering, according to
a report. From December
2017 to June 2018, Gift
and Usifoh allegedly promoted
the fake bitcoin investment
scheme via three
websites
Gift and Usifoh falsely
claimed that victims’ bitcoins
would be invested
using “unique trading
methods” and that they
would maintain a “constant
high interest rate.”
The pair also allegedly
encouraged investors to
transfer bitcoin to their
own cryptocurrency wallets.
Once transferred, Gift
and Usifoh would exchange
it for Nigerian
naira. In over six months,
the defendants stole 10.88
bitcoins (worth approximately
$56,391 at press
time) from three victims,
one residing in Oregon
and two in California, according
to the indictment.
They also used a photo of
a fourth victim to promote
their scheme.
In total, the prosecutors
alleged that Gift and Usifoh
received more than 50
bitcoins ($259,000)
through the scam.
