I eat my breakfast as a king,<br />
dinner as a pauper —Adediji<br />
Mr. Bode Adediji is Group Executive Chairman of Bode<br />

Limited <strong>and</strong> House of Estate International Limited,<br />
a Real Estate company with a difference. The 66 years old<br />
<strong>go</strong>od looking man speaks on his healthy lifestyle <strong>and</strong> suggested<br />
tips on how to keep fit.<br />
I walked into your office <strong>and</strong> I was<br />
told, you were taking a nap, why<br />
was that?<br />
Two things are essential in life.<br />
They are obituary <strong>and</strong> health.<br />
Anyone who does not take those<br />
things into recognition should<br />
have a rethink. There is no<br />
difference between human body<br />
<strong>and</strong> machine. If you work<br />
relentlessly without resting, there<br />
are consequences. And with my<br />
age, I cannot eat <strong>and</strong> drink<br />
carelessly. This is the era in which<br />
individual must be his or her own<br />
personal doctor. We all have<br />
smartphones therefore, it should<br />
not be a problem to research<br />
online on how to be healthy on a<br />
daily basis. Anyone above 50<br />
years old should take his or her<br />
health seriously. I have learnt to<br />
do the best I can to make sure I<br />
stay healthy. My health is superior<br />
to any other things. Money,<br />
family, fame, fun are <strong>go</strong>od but<br />
once any of these enumerated<br />
clashes with my health, I rather<br />
let it <strong>go</strong>.<br />
I have also principled myself to<br />
ensuring that myself, my wife,<br />
children <strong>and</strong> workers see doctors<br />
regularly for check-ups. In fact,<br />
you need to see doctor more when<br />
you think, you are healthy. If you<br />
retain your eating habit for so long<br />
a time, it is very wrong. It is also<br />
wrong for individual not to sweat<br />
on a daily basis.<br />
In summary, three thing must be<br />
observed. Routine medical checkup,<br />
food is key <strong>and</strong> lastly, <strong>go</strong>od<br />
exercises. I do not joke with my<br />

if they are getting the best in<br />
terms of health. A person’s<br />
lifestyle is important to his life.<br />
What kind of food do you eat<br />
looking at your age?<br />
I am above 66 years old <strong>and</strong><br />
people do not believe it. And I<br />
thank God for that. I was born in<br />
a village that traditionally,<br />
throughout my years, it was 100<br />
percent carbohydrate with some<br />
mixture of vegetable. Ande<br />
because I come from a poor<br />
family, things like meat or fish<br />
comes occasionally unless we <strong>go</strong><br />
to the village to get snails or<br />
squarrels. And in the University<br />
of Ife, we were into modern foods.<br />
When I started work in a early<br />
twenties, I was eating varieties.<br />
But, when I clocked 50 years, I<br />
became extra conscious of the<br />
type of food. And I also make sure<br />
that at every meal, there is<br />
vegetable. I underst<strong>and</strong> the type<br />
of food to eat, when to eat <strong>and</strong> in<br />
what frame of mind, I eat it.<br />
Food routine<br />
I cannot do without vegetables in<br />
my diet including lettuce,<br />
cucumber, tomatoes, carrot as<br />
breakfast. And I have orange or<br />
apple juice. A slice of bread <strong>and</strong><br />
egg. In the afternoon, I eat beans<br />
<strong>and</strong> yam or plantain. And in the<br />

smell of vinegar is strong, it<br />

evening, I eat one third of my food<br />
at 7pm. I make sure that I have<br />
vegetable in every meal. Other<br />
things is the percentage of water<br />
in-take on a daily basis.<br />
How would you advice a-70-year<br />
old individual in terms of food?<br />
To eat based on the advise of his<br />
or her medical doctor <strong>and</strong><br />
nutritionist. I am only conscious<br />
of my personality <strong>and</strong> identity. I<br />
have known those things that are<br />
<strong>go</strong>od for me <strong>and</strong> the ones that are<br />
bad. I take a glass of red wine <strong>and</strong><br />
sleep off although, it is not a<br />
regular basis. What is important<br />
is that individual should learn to<br />
eat in moderation.<br />
How would you rate your<br />
cooking?<br />
Can we skip that? If you want me<br />
to cook, you can phone my wife<br />
first before you engage me in the<br />
competition. I was barred from<br />
entering the kitchen by my<br />
mother. I was the last born of my<br />
family. We were seven children,<br />
six girls <strong>and</strong> one boy. I can cut<br />
grass, mob the floor but I was not<br />
allowed to even wash plate in the<br />
kitchen. The only thing, I can say<br />
is that I can cook egg better than<br />
anyone else.<br />

effort. This juice is slightly<br />
sweet <strong>and</strong> perfectly balanced,<br />

the ginger. Discard pulp <strong>and</strong><br />
pour your juice into a serving<br />

Dodo <strong>and</strong> beans is a<br />
Nigerian delicacy eaten<br />
by Nigerians. For healthy<br />
living, beans is important to<br />
us. We can eat beans with<br />
boiled yam, garri <strong>and</strong> water,<br />
boiled unripe plantain,<br />
boiled irish potatoes, fried/<br />
baked sweet potatoes, bread<br />
or plantain chips among<br />
<strong>others</strong>. For those who get<br />
heart burns after eating<br />
beans, it is advisable to<br />
parboil, drain water before<br />
cooking with fresh clean<br />
water. Beans is every home’s<br />

Ingredients<br />
Cups beans<br />
Bunch ripe plantain<br />
Small fresh red peppers<br />
Medium red bell peppers<br />
Medium sized onion<br />
Garlic cloves, minced<br />
Palm oil<br />
Teaspoon ground pepper<br />
Salt to taste<br />
Procedure<br />
Add cups water to a pot <strong>and</strong><br />
set on medium heat. Wash<br />
beans thoroughly to rid it of<br />
excess dirt <strong>and</strong> place in a pot<br />
of boiling water. Next, red<br />
bell peppers, fresh red<br />
peppers, onion bulb <strong>and</strong><br />
garlic cloves in a food<br />
processor or blender. Blitz<br />
for 30 seconds on medium<br />
speed till a not-so-smooth<br />
purée is formed. Heat up<br />
palm oil in a small pot <strong>and</strong><br />
add blended purée. Stir<br />

fridge for a day or so, but<br />
will taste best when fresh.<br />
This juice is incredibly<br />
healthy with Vitamins A, K<br />
<strong>and</strong> beta carotene from the<br />
carrots, vitamin C <strong>and</strong><br />
polyphenols from the<br />
apples, antioxidants <strong>and</strong><br />
folate from the beets, <strong>and</strong><br />
anti-inflammatory benefits<br />
from the ginger among<br />
<strong>others</strong>.<br />
gently <strong>and</strong> leave to fry on<br />
medium heat for 5-7<br />
minutes. Stir occasionally<br />
to prevent burning. When<br />
beans are 80 percent<br />
cooked, add fried blended<br />
purée <strong>and</strong> all other<br />
ingredients. Stir gently<br />
<strong>and</strong> leave to cook until<br />
beans is soft. Add water if<br />
more is required. Wash<br />
ripe plantain thoroughly<br />
<strong>and</strong> peel off the skin. In a<br />
mixing bowl, slice ripe<br />
plantain in whatever shape<br />
you desire, add pinch of<br />
salt, mix thoroughly to<br />
combine. Next gently drop<br />
ripe plantain piece by<br />
piece into the hot oil with<br />
a cooking tong but be<br />
careful not to over crowd<br />
the pan. Fry on both sides<br />
for 3-4 minutes or until<br />
lightly browned. Serve<br />
fried plantain <strong>and</strong> beans<br />
side by side.
