20 WAIKATO BUSINESS NEWS April/May 2019 CAMBRIDGE Big summer of cycling brings wins for Waikato Hamilton was New Zealand’s place to be this summer, with Bookabach reporting the city as its most booked destination over the holiday period. Featuring ahead of more traditional Kiwi summer hotspots Wanaka and Queenstown, the surge in popularity has been linked to the region continuing to attract a number of high profile international sporting events, including the Sevens, Black Caps fixtures and the UCI Track Cycling World Cup. For helmet heads, there was no better place to be than Waikato with three weeks of non-stop cycling action headlined by the Tissot UCI Track World Cup at the Avantidrome and also featuring continental BMX racing, the inaugural RIDE Festival and New Zealand’s only UCI 2.2 road race, the New Zealand Cycle Classic. The New Zealand leg of the UCI Track World Cup series saw more than 450 international riders and support crew roll into Cambridge. While the riders were responsible for bringing the intensity and heat on the track, a prolific and parochial home crowd played their part off it, contributing to a packed out, festival-like atmosphere at the world-class Avantidrome venue. And with a major influx of international athletes and support crew, plus the spectator audiences, comes real benefits for the region both in terms of visitor spend, and profiling the region and its impressive cycling infrastructure to domestic and international spectators. “We’re proud of the outcomes from hosting this event – leveraging the international cycling community to promote Waikato as a really impressive, high-value cycling tourism destination, drawing visitors and economic investment in the region and, as much as possible, working with local partners and suppliers to meet event delivery requirements,” said Janette Douglas, Cycling New Zealand event director. This success is also another feather in the cap of the Home of Champions brand that has become synonymous with the Waipā area. Broadcast to hundreds of countries worldwide, international audiences have been exposed to Waikato as a ‘must visit’ destination. Further capitalising on the high quality cycling environment on offer in Waikato – both road and track – and the superb New Zealand summer, a number of teams stayed on beyond the competition period for training camps before heading back to Europe for the World Championships event in March – a significant boost for international bed nights and ongoing visitor spend in the region. Cycling New Zealand’s second foray into hosting a top tier international competition was a resounding success, both off and on the track. Stunning performances on opening night from the threetime world champion men’s team sprint, and record-breaking rides by the men’s and women’s team pursuit squads, guided New Zealand to five gold and two bronze medals over the three days of racing. It was an exceptional and unparalleled team performance that earned them the round winner’s trophy and made a definitive statement 18 months out from cycling’s biggest stage, the Tokyo Olympics. Cycling New Zealand high performance director Martin Barras said for New Zealand’s Vantage Elite Track Cycling Team it was a rare privilege to contest a World Cup in front of a home crowd. A privilege which will be welcomed again this December, when the World Cup returns to New Zealand for the final round of UCI competition before the Tokyo Olympics.
