City council planning and delivery transport manager Lynette Ellis said work on a crossing in the area was not scheduled until the financial year of 2024. Redcliffs Residents Association president Christine Toner Christine Toner said it was far too long to wait and saw the absence of a pedestrian crossing as a safety issue. “That is very disappointing,” she said. “The parents I have spoken to talk about it being very difficult crossing the Main Rd to get to Barnett Park.” There is only one other pedestrian crossing in the area, which is 240m away from the entrance of the park. Association member and transport adviser Darren Fidler said a pedestrian crossing in the area would provide a vital link between the Coastal Pathway and the park. “Barnett Park is obviously a great community asset it has some of the only public toilets along the Coastal Pathway from Ferrymead to when you get into Sumner,” Dr Fidler said. “It’s also about perceived safety, you want to be encouraging active modes of transport.” Heathcote Ward city councillor Sara Templeton did not see the pedestrian crossing as a priority. “I don’t think it [Barnett Park pedestrian crossing] is urgent, I think that getting the Coastal Pathway work done around Moncks Bay is more urgent and that is where I have been focusing on because there is no footpath in that area,” she said. The median island will run between Clarence and Matipo Sts and is part of a project to replace and upgrade outdated underground pipes and rebuild the road to accommodate bus priority measures between Harakeke and Matipo Sts. City council transport planning and delivery manager Lynette Ellis said the adjustments will ensure that the median island is easier to negotiate for emergency services. The median will help make Riccarton Rd a pedestrianfriendly destination for shoppers and visitors, with streetscape enhancements and trees creating a traffic calming effect. The trees will remain through the central shopping area of Riccarton Rd. However, there will be 10 fewer trees than originally planned at the outer edges of the project and around intersections.
