8 Tuesday May 21 2019 Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi News Boys’ bike business taking off • By Matt Slaughter NEGLECTED, unroadworthy bikes are being repaired and sold at affordable prices by three Haeata Community Campus students. Year 10 students Cyprus Rangirangi and Dylan Hyde and year 8 Brayden Chalmers- Carr are in the process of refurbishing 21 donated bikes. So far this term they had fixed four bikes and sold two. The boys’ teacher Rodney Flavell said each bike had been sold for between $20 and $30. Brayden said: “If one of my friend’s bike breaks down, then we can help each other.” He loved this about the project. Cyprus said: “I just like biking and my bike breaks a lot.’’ He was thankful for the opportunity to learn how to fix it. Selling the bikes felt “good because I’m helping people,” he said. Dylan said he had enjoyed working as a team and he’d got more out of the project than he first expected. “I didn’t realise that people were going to buy them, but I guess it felt good when people bought them.” Brayden, Cyprus and Dylan said their goal was to fix and sell enough to be able to afford their own BMX bikes. The bikes being repaired were donated by Sergeant Steve Sibley and the Aranui Neighbourhood Policing Team. Sergeant Sibley said the project was valuable because it had the potential to reduce the number of students who were dropped off at Haeata by their parents. “The goal is hopefully to get FUNDRAISER: Hornby High School teacher Juliet Buenaventura and her band performing a Filipino song. more kids on bikes and more people on bikes so it’s a bit more of a healthy environment, because very few bike.” He said it gave the three boys involved a real sense of purpose and saved bikes, which were unable to be returned to their original owners and would otherwise be dumped. Mr Flavell reached out to Sergeant Sibley to support their project after he noticed the boys’ passion for BMX. • By Georgia O’Connor-Harding HORNBY HIGH School has showcased its brightest talent to help fundraise for those impacted by the Christchurch terror attacks. The concert, organised by the school’s team of prefects has raised more than $530. The money will go towards supporting the family of the Springs Rd Dairy, an affected family at the school and for a man who works at GAS Hornby. Prefect Shardey Jade, 17, said it wanted to show how important it was to bring the school together to support those affected. PHOTO: MARTIN HUNTER “With their love of bikes, we had an opportunity to work with the police and get them a bit of cash so they could buy paint and chains and stuff like that. That was how these guys got into it and how they’re helping out the community.” As part of their learning, they have had to research the skills and tools needed to fix the bikes and order the parts needed to do this. Concert for a cause “Every term we have made a goal to run events. Our goal was to arrange a fundraiser so we could bring the Hornby community together,” she said. The Hornby community was hugely affected by the attacks. The owner of the Springs Rd Dairy, Junaid Ismail died at Majhid Al Noor on March 15. A father of a student at Hornby High School and a man who works at GAS Hornby was injured during the attacks. About 100 people including the performers attended the event. The concert featured 14 acts including performances from the school choir. THe association’s secretary David Hawke said making the buses faster and more predictable has three components. “One of these is bus priority lanes, another is passengers knowing exactly when their bus will arrive, and the remaining component is speeding the transit of buses by giving them priority at signalised intersections,” he said. Since the start of the year, Environment Canterbury has received four complaints over the timeliness of the Orange Line and 60 routes. Mr Hawke said the two projects complement the city council’s $13 million plans to widen Lincoln Rd between Curletts and Wrights Rds. An Environment Canterbury spokeswoman said the Lincoln Rd project will improve travel times for Orange Line passengers. “We supported that project and it is part of an ongoing process. We need to get public transport priorities all the way from Halswell right through to the central city.” Halswell Community Project chairwoman Chrys Horn said the buses are generally full at rush hour and it would be good to see bus lanes installed in Halswell. “THere are no bus lanes here and because we have grown so fast, we have got a lot of traffic going into the city,” she said. Dr Horn said she prefers to cycle, but when she has used the buses, there have been times when they have not run on schedule. Last year, a Ministry of Transport survey found public transport in the city was the lowest in the country with nearly two-thirds of its population choosing to avoid the bus. From January 2017 to January 2018, it was found only 35 per cent of people used buses. “We need to be quite bold in setting it up because we have got one of the lowest public transport user numbers of any place in New Zealand,” Dr Horn said.
