Taking Charge!
Your health is important, because it is yours. You have heard the
mantra, you only get one body, so you must take care of it. From where
I am standing, that is quite true. There are a lot of factors that go into
your health, but one factor that we have total control of is choice.
We choose to eat poorly. We choose to work out or not. We
choose to live life in front of the computer or television.
These choices, like all others, have repercussions. Being
sedentary is a choice and living with the effects of that lifestyle is
your choice.
What you have to understand is that when you seek out help,
you’re seeking out not only the healthcare professional, the personal
trainer, or nutritionist, but you are seeking them out for their
knowledge, experience and insight to your problem. Again, you are
at the crossroads of choice. You can choose to accept what they are
telling you, or not. One of these choices is going to require work.
Once you have made the decision to take charge of your health,
get rid of pain, get in shape, or whatever your situation calls for,
your next step is to assemble your team. My team? Yes, you are going
to need a team of people who can help you. Is it possible to do
things on your own, to help yourself? Absolutely! However, what is
the cost? When you were in school, you were taught by a teacher
to learn something new, at which point you learned the skill and
from there apply that skill into your life. However, that does not go
for everything, you can’t adjust yourself, and do your own blood
work, but you can do the exercises you’ve learned at home, stretch
yourself, and start eating right all on your own.
Your team. Your team should be comprised of people whom you
trust, people you vibe well with. Building that rapport with your
healthcare providers is important. Question them! If they are not
willing to take the time to teach you, are they really the right provider
for you? A good provider will also question you and your choices,
they will push you to make changes, think outside the box for you,
but most importantly they will put their egos aside to help you find
the best solution to your problems. Even if it means you going outside
their office to do so. The answer is not always a pill or a medication.
The answer to a lot of problems just requires work and time.
So, TAKE CHARGE! Make choices for your health that will push you
past your comfort zone and into a place where you are no longer in pain
and dysfunction. Take the dog for a walk, have a leisurely stroll with
your significant other. Take charge! Make change! Live your best life!
