For Jonathan Alder High School’s varsity
softball team, the 2019 season was
filled with so many dog piles.
The ultimate in this post-win celebration
that sees players leap on top of one
another into one happy heap came with
the Pioneers’ Div. II state championship
victory over Hebron Lakewood on June 1
at Firestone Stadium in Akron.
“We did (the dog pile) at the end of
every tournament game. We were always
just excited to keep moving on and keep
playing with each other,” said junior third
baseman Jillian Jakse, who earned firstteam
all-state honors and has been a part
of Jonathan Alder’s three straight trips to
the state tournament.
She kept my hips aligned and gave me the best workout plan for
easier delivery. I gave birth to my little boy in 7hrs 100% drug free.
I can’t thank her enough.” F.W. 11/7/18
turning starters from the 2018 team who
knew what to expect when it came to the big
show.
“Being there three times already, we felt
very comfortable. We were used to big
crowds and all the noise,” Jakse said. “We
knew that once we got there, we were going
to take it all. We were very confident and we
wanted it.”
This laser focus was evident from early
on in the season, said Head Coach Dave Mc-
Grew, who was joined on the coaching staff
by Heather Colvin, Glen Widner, Charlotte
Palmer and Cress Murdock. The past two
years, the players were happy to make
state; this year, they were determined to not
just make state but to win it, he said.
That resolve originated with the team’s
pre-season trip to Panama City, Fla.
“By the second day, you didn’t know who
was a senior and who was a freshman, who
was the most skilled player... They just
bonded on a level I’ve never seen before,”
McGrew said.
“Panama City was the first time we’d
even been on the dirt together (this year),”
said junior centerfielder Lindsey Potter,
who was named second-team all-district.
“You could see the determination in everybody’s
eyes, whether they were on the field
or on the bench.”
Junior shortstop Emily Walker, who was
named second-team all-state, said that
friendship was the team’s key to success.
“I feel like we all loved each other. We
didn’t have any drama that held us back.
We were best friends, and I think that
helped a lot.”
Aside from the obvious high point of the
season—winning state—both Potter and Walker said some of their
favorite moments came at the regional finals where they beat
Thornville Sheridan 13-3 to advance to the state final four.
“It was the last inning and Marlee had struck out the first two
batters. That’s when I thought, ‘We’re going back to state.’ Then, the
next hit was a line drive to me, and I made the last out,” Walker said.
“Once we won regionals, the way I felt was that we were going
back to the best place we could ever be,” Potter said. “From the beginning
of the year, I wanted to go back to Akron. It is a great feeling
to know the crowd is full of people who support you and that
everyone on the field has your back every single play.”
Jonathan Alder beat Poland Seminary 6-3 in the state semi-finals
before facing Lakewood in the finals. The Pioneers got off to a
fast start, scoring three runs in the first inning. They added a fourth
run in the third, all the while putting up a defensive front that kept
Lakewood at Bay. The final score was 4-2.
Just as they had given the team a huge sendoff before state, the
Jonathan Alder and Plain City community welcomed the team back
in grand style after the big victory.
“They had a semi with a flatbed trailer, fire department trucks,
police officers...we paraded through town and even stopped for ice
cream. It was incredible,” McGrew said of the fans’ reception.
The team also plans to celebrate with a banquet and party, as
well as a trip to Cedar Point.
“This team does it right,” McGrew said, chuckling about the celebration
plans. “They’re just a wonderful bunch of kids.”
Excelling on national exam
Jonathan Alder students earned one gold medal, six silver
medals, 10 bronze medals and 53 honorable mentions on the 2019
National Spanish Examinations. The exams are the largest of their
kind in the United States with over 146,000 students participating.
Dennis Rosales, an eighth-grader who took Spanish 1 for high
school credit, achieved the highest score among Jonathan Alder students
and placed second in Ohio.
Students from Jonathan Alder have a long history of high
achievement on these exams and were taught by Spanish teachers,
Lindsay Dollinger and Jessica Flere.
The National Spanish Examinations are administered each year
in grades 6-12 and are sponsored by the American Association of
Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese.

Pushing for safety at 42 and 70
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
County officials and the Madison County
Chamber of Commerce are putting their
support behind possible safety improvements
along U.S. Route 42 at the I-70 interchange.
“This section of Route 42 has a long history
of congestion and crashes due to multiple
conflicting access points and lack of turn
lanes,” said Bryan Dhume, Madison County
engineer.
The Ohio Department of Transportation
(ODOT) is scheduled in 2021 to reconstruct
pavement and improve roadside and subsurface
drainage on Route 42 between the
Speedway gas station and Pilot Travel Center.
As part of that project, the department
wants to add a center turn lane and better
align driveways to businesses in the area.
ODOT is applying for federal highway
safety funds to cover the costs of the turn
lane addition and driveway alignments. The
funding is not guaranteed as departments
across the state are competing for the funds,
Dhume said.
The committee that awards federal highway
safety dollars takes local support into
consideration. To this end, Dhume has written
a letter to Mitch Blackford, deputy director
of ODOT District 6, declaring support
for the safety improvements at 42 and I-70.
Blackford will include the letter with
took place at Veterans Field and the Mount
ODOT’s funding application.
Dhume secured the signatures of Madison County commissioners
David Hunter and Mark Forrest, as well as David Kell, executive
director of the Chamber. He said he hopes that government
officials in Deercreek Township, the city of London, and the village
of West Jefferson will submit similar letters of support.
“Ongoing commercial and industrial development in the village
of West Jefferson and city of London continues to place increasing
pressure on the interchange,” Dhume writes in the letter. “In addition,
Madison County is in the process of extending water service
to this area, with completion planned in 18-24 months. We anticipate
the resulting additional development will cause further congestion
and higher crash rates if safety improvements are not made
in the same time period.”
ODOT should know in the next couple of weeks whether it received
the safety funding, Dhume said.
In other business, Dhume announced at the June 4 county commissioners’
meeting that he was able to move up replacement of the
bridge on Rosedale Milford Road, north of Thomas Road in Monroe
Township. Originally, the project was slated for 2022. Dhume has
secured federal funding that will be available this July, allowing
the project to get under way as early as this fall.
The entire 110-foot long bridge is deteriorated, Dhume said, from
the steel beams to the timber decking. As a result, the Engineer’s
Office has lowered the bridge’s weigh limit twice. Vehicles crossing
the bridge are now limited to 11 tons, effectively preventing loaded
trucks and farm equipment from using the bridge. The truck detour
is State Route 38 to State Route 161.
“For local farmers, it’s the most inconvenience because there’s
no great way around it,” Dhume said.
The estimated cost for engineering and construction is $861,650.
The Engineer’s Office will advertise for bids and contract out the
work. Once started, the project will take two to three months to
complete, Dhume said.
The Southern Boys will perform from 7 to
10 p.m. July 13 at the Summer Jam Festival.
Live bands are scheduled for July 14-
15, as well. The festival is taking place in
The Lady Riders celebrate their Div. III Region 12 championship on May 25: (front row, from left) Haley Kurtz,
Raegan Kimbler, Morgan Boyd, Brianna Crigger; (back row) Peyton Filby, Lena Carsey, Kyla Huber and Abby
Arteaga. They defeated West Liberty-Salem 4-2 at Wright State University in Dayton. With the victory, they advanced
to the state final four in Akron.
if you would’ve asked us if we were going to
make it to the final four at state, we
would’ve laughed.”
The same goes for Head Coach Jim
Stevens, who said he never would have
guessed the team would end up where it
did. Part of that had to do with the players’
varying experience levels—some had eaten,
breathed and slept softball for many years
and some, by comparison, were relatively
new to the game.
“To be honest, early in the season, Tony
Caldwell, my assistant coach, and I looked
at each other and said, ‘We have to try to
get these girls to work together as a team,’”
Stevens said.
He credits his senior leadership for helping
to make that happen. Bowman, pitcher
Isabelle Fisher, shortstop Haley Kurtz,
rightfielder Hannah Parsons, and third
baseman Brooke Roberts showed the
younger players the ropes. After a while, all
of the players were lifting each other up.
Bowman said it was “cool to see how the
team evolved over the season” and how
everything clicked at tournament time.
“Once the tournaments hit, it was like,
bam!, we were a team. After the first tournament
game, we started shouting, “Family,’
out of the huddle. We all worked
together.”
The Roughriders had made it to the district
title game the past four years in a row,
but each time came up short of a win. Team
connectivity is what made the difference
this year, said Fisher, who earned secondteam
all-state honors and finished the season
with a 20-7 record, 1.93 ERA, and 192
strikeouts.
“The past few years, we’ve had the talent
to get there. This year, we didn’t have that
raw talent, but we had a lot of heart,” she said.
One of Fisher’s favorite moments of the season was the team’s
victory over Bishop Ready to win the Div. III district title.
“We were on Cloud 9 after that. It gives me goosebumps talking
about it. Getting over that hump for our coaches was a good feeling,”
she said, adding that after that, everything else was icing on the
cake.
West Jefferson went on to the regionals, held at Wright State
Gearing up for
Strawberry Fest
The London Strawberry Festival will be held June 20-22. There
are many community service opportunities and fun activities available.
We would love to have all sorts of individuals and groups, including
4-H clubs, decorate a vehicle or walk in our grand parade on
June 22. Pets and project animals are welcome (maybe on a wagon
or pick-up truck as streets are
hot on paws). Those 4-H members
with horses are invited to
letter
ride. Cleanup immediately after your animal is required. An emergency
spotter is recommended. Parade contests include best 4-H
themed unit (sponsored by Canaan Pathfinders 4-H Club), best
strawberry themed unit, best decorated kids’ vehicle/bike contest,
best royalty float, and a pet contest.
We have a need for community service help. Groups and individuals
are needed to help in the shortcake tent and in the information
booth. Help is needed during the parade with announcer forms and
registration. Feel free to wear club or organizational shirts. Committee
members will sign community service hours forms for schools
and other requirements.
Many contests are offered at the festival in the categories of art,
coloring, story writing, poetry, fairy gardens, strawberry accessories,
photogenic, cake/cookie decorating, strawberry food, window decorating,
toy building (Legos, K’Nex), babies and royalty. For contest deadlines
and details, go to www.londonstrawberryfestival.com.
The talent showcase offers participants a chance to show off their
talent during the festival on a volunteer basis.
Vendor spaces are still available on a limited basis.
We are looking for a group or groups to take care of trash during
the festival. For details, contact Kevin Stockham at (614) 668-1936.
Don’t miss the Strawberry car show on June 21 hosted by the
Strawberry Festival royalty, free plane rides for youth hosted by
the Young Eagles at the Madison County Airport on June 22, and
the COBRA car show and burnout rides on June 22.
Long & short goodbyes of songs
Ever since I was a kid spinning
45 rpm vinyl records on a
portable record player that had
a felt-covered platter (yes, I’m
ancient), I’ve wondered why
some pop and rock songs end by fading out while others
have a definitive ending.
I’m not a musician or a record producer, so I’m not
well versed in the recording process. But someone
does make a conscious decision on how to end a song,
be it the songwriter or the producer.
A few years ago, National Public Radio researched
this topic and reported that it comes down to a couple
of reasons: 1) the fadeout made it easier for radio disc
jockeys to control the end of a song to allow for commercials,
etc.; and 2) some artists feel the lingering
fadeout enhances the listening experience by repeating
the song’s chorus or “hook.”
That being said, which is better? The fadeout or the
definitive ending?
I asked an old musician friend of mine, Matt Wyatt,
who played guitar for The Great Plains and now performs
with The 3 Speeds, which he preferred.
“My thoughts about fadeouts are, does the band feel
stupid repeating a phrase, knowing it is not gonna be
completely heard? Wyatt said. “I prefer clipped, sudden
endings.”
Fadeouts can be long or short. They can trick you
sometimes by fading out and then coming back before
fading out again. I’m looking at you, psychedelic-era
Beatles.
Speaking of The Fab Four, the long fadeout on the
Beatles’ “Hey Jude” works because it is a mesmerizing
chant.
Some short fadeouts almost serve as an abrupt
ending, like on Bob Dylan’s “Love Minus Zero/No
Limit,” a song I love. On this song, the fadeout is tantalizingly
short, making me wish it could at least go
editor’s notebook
Rick Palsgrove
on for a few more seconds.
Some songs that on a recording
have a fadeout can sometimes
cause a band problems
when performed live. It seems
like the band does not know how
to end such a song in a clean
way. So, during live performances,
they often strum guitars
really fast and end the song
with a “chunk” of drums, bass
and guitar all at once. There are
too many instances of this to
name. Come up with an ending!
A song with a good definitive
ending is like coming to the end
of a good book. The sound ties up neatly and satisfyingly,
such as with The Who’s “Won’t Get Fooled
Again.” Some endings can be almost jarring but fit the
song’s attitude, such as The Music Machine’s “Talk,
Talk,” which ends with a bam in a sharp, clipped
vocal.
“No matter what you hear on a record, you’re hearing
a structured performance in a studio that is worked on
to get a certain sound, but at the same time, the band
wants you to feel the immediacy of the music,” said
Wyatt. “When a song is ending, a fadeout can snap you
out of denial because you’re obviously hearing someone
going away who isn’t really going away.”
It’s all a musical jumble and, anyway, the songs we
like are all so subjective. Ultimately, it is up to each
of us to decide what we like best when listening to our
favorite tunes and, no matter how a song ends, all we
need to do is replay it to relive the experience.
I could end this column with a fadeout or just stop.
Tax agreements signed for another warehouse
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
West Jefferson village council approved tax incentive agreements
to pave the way for a new distribution warehouse in the village’s
commerce park.
Hillwood, a Dallas, Texas-based developer, plans to build an
844,000 square-foot building. Construction is slated to start in June
and finish up sometime in the first half of next year. This is Hillwood’s
first project in West Jefferson; the developer has done other
industrial projects in the Columbus area.
Hillwood does not have a tenant for the West Jefferson building
but hopes to attract a Fortune 500 company similar to those that
already have warehouses in the area, according to T.J. O’Brien,
Hillwood vice president.
On June 3, council approved a Community Reinvestment Area
agreement that gives Hillwood a 15-year, 100 percent real property
tax exemption on the assessed value of the new building. Council
also approved a 30-year, 100 percent Tax Increment Financing
