Metamorphosis 

She found inspiration for her own range of jewellery in a butterfly … symbolising a new 

season and new beginnings after overcoming loss and heartache. We met up with 

designer Carmen Amdur, owner of José Jewellers in Benoni.

She called the range Metamorphosis 

and considers its recent launch to be 

the highlight of her career as a designer. 

For the beautiful 47-year-old brunette, 

the range has been a very personal 

undertaking, with inspirational meaning 

behind the name. “I have designed 

the range to celebrate the strength, 

resilience and beauty of women who 

survive life’s tragedies and traumas,” 

she states. 

Carmen’s interest in jewellery started 

when she was about six years old. “My 

mother was selling jewellery out of suitcases, 

calling on offices and businesses, 

so I learnt about and loved jewellery 

from a young age,” she remembers. 

She followed in her mother, Noreen de 

Gouveia’s footsteps. Noreen established 

José Jewellers in 1985. From the age 

of 14, Carmen worked at the business 

every Saturday morning, and once 

she left school in 1990 it became her 

full-time job. She completed courses in 

diamond and gemstone grading as well 

as jewellery valuations and has been 

running the business on her own with a 

team for the last 18 years. 

Carmen is a born-and bred Benonian 

and has two sons, Kyle (21) and Jordan 

(15). She was happily married for 21 

years, but unfortunately had to go 

through the pain and heartache of a 

divorce eight years ago. Since then she 

has been in two relationships that didn’t 

work out. Her last relationship ended on 

a sad note when he committed suicide 

eight months ago. 

“He was kind, caring and gentle. I knew 

he was depressed, but I didn’t realise 

that he was depressed to the extent that 

he would take his own life! I could not 

understand why I had to go through all 

the heartache in my life and decided 

to go for counselling. After working 

through all the emotions for a while, I 

started to feel the urge to be creative,” 

she recalls. 

“I started to design the Metamorphosis 


range and I can’t believe how everything 

just fell into place. It was as if it 

was meant to be! Since the launch in 

September we’ve had the most incredible 

response! I’ve always said everything 

happens for a reason. Even if you 

don’t understand the difficult times, 

you eventually see why you had to go 

through the challenge. You can’t evolve 

unless you’ve been put in a situation 

where you are forced to fight through 

and grow,” Carmen concludes. 

How would you describe the Metamorphosis 

range? 

Metamorphosis is a feminine, detailed 

range consisting of rings, earrings and 

pendants made out of 9-ct rose and 

white gold with diamonds.

Describe your design style. 

I love designs with intricate attention 

to detail, designs that are different and 

unique. 

What are the upcoming trends in the 

jewellery design industry? 

Rose and white gold are still very 

popular as well as platinum since the 

price of the metal has dropped so much. 

Large coloured stones like blue topaz 

are trendy and silver jewellery in general 

has made a big comeback. Nomination 

bracelets still remain an ongoing trend 

as well as personalised name jewellery 

from our MeMi Collection. 

How do you want women to feel when 

wearing your jewellery? 

I love that jewellery is so personal – 

whether it’s been passed down for generations 

and has a history of sentiment 

or a new piece 

designed for a special occasion. I want 

the women who wear my jewellery 

to associate it with a special time in 

their lives. 

What is your favourite piece you’ve 

ever created – and what made it 

so special? 

My favourite piece is the Isabella ring 

from the Metamorphosis range. It signifies 

a new season and new beginnings 

in my life. 

How should we wear jewellery? When 

is it too much and when too little? 

Your jewellery is a reflection of your 

personality. When it comes to jewellery, 

I believe less is more, especially if 

you want to show off exclusive, striking 

pieces. However, wearing a lot of funky, 

trendy pieces will again reflect the personality 

of an eccentric or arty person. 

Jewellery is about art and individual style 

and the statement you want to make. I 

don’t believe there should be rules for 

how you choose to express yourself. 

Tips on how to take care of 

jewellery? 

It’s best to take your jewellery to a reputable 

jeweller once a year and have your 

stones checked and the metal properly 

polished. You can clean your jewellery 

at home using a good-quality jewellery 

cleaner or polishing cloth, but to really 

get it looking like new, it needs to be polished 

on a polishing machine to get the 

scratches off. If you wear your jewellery a 

lot, it’s very important to have your stone 

settings checked as stones generally only 

fall out of settings which are worn. Pearls 

need to be restrung every few years 

as well.

Acts of love 

Sharon Ruston is the East Rand’s Mother Teresa for pregnant teenagers and their babies. 

She has a passion for babies and the miracle 

of life. The idea to help women with 

unplanned pregnancies and their babies 

stems from her schooldays when pictures 

of aborted babies were shown in the hope 

that it would prevent unwanted pregnancies 

among the girls at school. 

Sharon (51) has been living in Boksburg for 

most of her life. She has been married to 

John for 32 years and the couple has three 

adult sons, one whom is a special-needs 

child. Her idea to help pregnant teenagers 

only came to fruition many years later after 

she had raised her children. 

In the mid-’90s she decided to volunteer 

for a pregnancy crisis centre in Pretoria by 

collecting donations on the East Rand 

and taking them to the centre on a bimonthly 

basis. 

In 2001 a church supported Sharon’s 

dream and assisted her in renting a house 

in Kempton Park. She opened the Life Link 

Pregnancy Crisis Centre, from where she 

could run counselling offices and where 

women who were releasing their babies 

for adoption would stay until the adoption 

had been finalised. 

“Not everyone has a happy story to tell 

when it comes to being pregnant or how 

they got pregnant and many women do 

not have the support they need when they 

are pregnant. Facing an unwanted, unplanned 

pregnancy can be very daunting, 

and often life-changing decisions are made 

without the necessary support,” she says. 

Sharon’s initiative receives no government 

support. Funds are generated through 

fund-raising activities and the generosity 

of donors and supporters. She was 

ecstatic when donors offered to help with 

the purchase of a house in Kempton Park.

Jeremiah’s Hope.

offices. As soon as funds become available,

their unwanted babies instead of dumping 

them on the streets, in rubbish bins or in 

the veld, where they are left to die. 

Everyone involved at the crisis centre is 

a volunteer. Readers who are interested 

can become voluntary counsellors or can 

organise stork parties to support Life 

Link Single Mom Support Group and 

Jeremiah’s Hope. 

What is the saddest part of working 

with these young teenage moms? 

For me the saddest thing is the lack of support 

from the fathers. Many deny paternity 

or abandon their pregnant partner when 

she tells them about the baby. Many men 

do not want the responsibility of a child 

and leave the women to fend for themselves. 

I feel that if the women had support 

from their partners, they would not consider 

abortion or abandonment. It is sad 

that a woman is put in the position where 

she even has to consider abandonment for 

whatever reason. 

I also find it sad that teenagers do not have 

open relationships with their parents and 

cannot discuss issues such as sex, sexuality, 

pregnancy and relationships. To date, our 

youngest client is only 12 years of age. 

And the happiest part? 

Seeing the joy on the face of the mother 

when she brings her baby to show us and

In the next three months, four of our “babies” 

will turn 18. Two finished matric last 

year and two will finish this year. 

Are there any interesting cases that 

you can tell us about? 

There are so many … but one that clearly 

sticks in my mind is that of a 15-year-old 

who was raped at knife-point after school 

on her way home. She did not want to 

abort the baby but also did not want 

to keep it, as she felt that it would be a 

constant reminder of what had happened 

to her. She was afraid that the baby would 

look like the ‘monster’ who raped her. She 

decided to release the baby for adoption. 

She gave birth to a beautiful baby girl who 

looked exactly like her. She was thankful 

that she could give a family a little girl 

despite the circumstances under which she 

was conceived and was glad that she did 

not abort as seeing the baby was a healing 

experience for her … the baby was not 

a monster but a beautiful, vulnerable 

baby girl. 

What is the first thing that happens 

when a pregnant teenager asks 

for help? 

When a client comes into the centre, 

our aim is to treat them with dignity and 

confidentiality and try to provide them 

with a safe space where they can explore 

their feelings about the situation they find 

themselves in. We offer free pregnancy 

tests to establish if in fact they are pregnant 

and meet them at the point of 

their need with regard to relevant and 

specific counselling.

Dining with 

BEN UNGERMANN 

To share a table with the famous MasterChef Australia 2017 

runner-up, Ben Ungermann, was an experience in itself 

… but to be spoiled with a four-course dinner from his 

repertoire of famous recipes was the cherry on top! 

Ben hosted a chicken masterclass at 

Capsicum Culinary Studio campus in 

Boksburg recently. He demonstrated 

how to break down a chicken and use 

every single piece of the bird. Under 

his watchful eye, students of Capsicum 

prepared three chicken dishes: Chicken 

liver parfait with rosemary and smoked 

bacon (starter); Deconstructed chicken 

Caesar salad (entrée); and chicken 

with black garlic asparagus (mains) as 

well as his amazing vanilla bay leaf ice 

cream with pumpkin and Dutch spice 

(dessert). 

The dinner was a gourmet experience, 

to say the least. 

Surprises such as rosemary leaves 

dipped in sugar syrup and baked till 

crispy, bacon dust and black garlic 

purée were just a few touches that 

added scrumptious flavour and texture 

to the plated food. 

Ben, who is also famous for his funky 

icecreams, shared the vanilla bay 

leaf ice cream as well as two chicken 

recipes with Get It readers. 

Chicken breast with black garlic 

and asparagus 

Ingredients 

10 chicken breasts; 5 fresh sprigs thyme; 5 cloves 

garlic; salt and pepper 

Black garlic purée 

Charcoal powder; 5 bulbs black garlic; 150g butter; 

1 cup of cream; salt and pepper 

Lemon asparagus 

60 asparagus; butter; 6 lemons; salt and pepper 

Garnish: 200g peas; 200g watercress 

Method 

In a frying pan on high heat, add a splash olive oil. 

Meanwhile, butterfly the chicken breast. Add to 

frying pan and heavily sear one side and then the 

other until caramelised. Reduce heat to just 

below half. 

Place lid on frying pan and allow simmering until 

cooked through. 

Blanch asparagus on a low heat, transfer to a pot 

with butter on a low simmering heat and poach the 

asparagus until tender but not over- cooked. Drain 

and season with lemon, salt and pepper. 

Black garlic purée: Add all ingredients to a pot and 

bring to a gentle simmer. Add to a blender and turn 

into a purée place in a squeeze bottle and set aside.

Vanilla bay leaf ice cream, pumpkin & Dutch spices 

Ingredients 

Vanilla bay leaf ice cream 

2 cups cream; 1 cup milk; 6 large bay leaves ; 2 eggs ; 170g caster sugar; 2 tsp vanilla paste 

Method: Turn on ice cream machine to pre-chill. Pre-heat oven to 180°C. 

For the vanilla bay leaf ice cream, place cream, milk and bay leaf in a medium saucepan, 

place over a medium heat and bring to a simmer. Remove from heat and allow infusing 

for 10 minutes. Discard bay leaves. 

Place egg, sugar and vanilla bean paste into the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a 

whisk attachment and whisk until very light and fluffy. With motor running, add warm 

cream and milk mixture and whisk until combined. Return the mixture to the saucepan 

and place over a low heat. Stir continuously until mixture thickens and can coat the back 

of a spoon. Pass the mixture through a fine sieve into a medium bowl, and place over a 

large bowl of iced water to cool. 

When cold, place mixture into ice cream machine and churn according to manufacturer’s 

instructions. Once churned, place the ice cream into the freezer to set.

New Caesar salad with 

chicken lollipops 

Ingredients 

Chicken Lollipops 

40 chicken wings; butter; salt 

and pepper 

Chicken Ju 

Bones and offcuts; water; mixed 

herbs 

Instant mayo (May need to 

double the recipe) 

1 egg; 1tbsp mustard; 1/2 lemon; 

330ml oil; salt and pepper 

Garnishes 

25 quail eggs; 1kg cos lettuce; 

500g rocket; 250g shaved 

Parmesan 

Method 

Make a series of lollipops from 

the chicken wings. Make a ju from 

all the offcuts and bones from 

chicken lollipops and place in a 

large frying pan with water and 

herbs. Allow heavily caramelising 

and sticking to the pan. 

Deglaze with water. Cover and 

allow reducing a few times until 

thick. Set aside in a squeeze 

bottle for plating. 

Cook the lollipops in butter and 

herbs and poach gently. Store at 

room temperature, covered with 

aluminium foil. 

Boil quail eggs for about 2½ 

minutes and place in ice water to 

stop the cooking process. 

Peel and set aside for service 

(they will need to be halved).

The return of houseplants 

Remember the ferns, begonias and delicious monsters that used to decorate our 

homes way back when? Well, it’s time to buy a few pretty pots for indoor 

pot plants as they are trendy again! 

And there are valid reasons why it is a 

good idea to follow the trend. 

• Plants can absorb the radiation from 

electronic devices in the work and 

living place. 

• Plants clean the air. The best plant 

to purify the air is a Golden pothos 

(Epipremnum aureum), also known as 

devil’s ivy. 

• Plants help us feel more relaxed. The 

presence of plants leads to reduced 

stress and anxiety and it also help to 

ease depression. 

• Cut flowers are expensive and last 

for a short period of time, whereas 

flowering houseplants last much 

longer. 

• Large and dramatic tropical leaves like 

those of monsteras and philodendrons 

are popular décor trends. 

Choosing indoor plants 

Lighting is the most important factor 

that determines the success of growing 

indoor plants. 

You need to choose the correct 

plant for low, medium and high levels 

of light. Once the plants’ lighting needs 

are established, choose plants for 

their size, shape, colour and texture to 

complement the décor.

We’re planting salvia ‘Salmia’ for its 

superb show in the garden. This shrubby 

upright perennial salvia produces 

endless spikes of large dark purple, 

pink or orange red blooms that attract 

bees and stand out against the dark 

green leaves. Plants flower from spring 

to autumn and even through winter in 

warmer areas. Growing 60 to 80cm high 

and wide, it is good filler for beds or 

as a feature in a large container. Plants 

are frost-hardy, performing best in full 

sun in fertile, well-drained soil. Like all 

salvia, it needs moderate watering and 

the soil can dry out between watering. 

For strong growth, cut back in spring, 

fertilise and water well. 

Best for patios … Imagine 

having deliciously fragrant 

and pickable sweet basil at 

your fingertips. Basil ‘Dolce 

Fresca’ is patio basil that 

grows perfectly in a pot, 

keeps its compact bushy 

shape and doesn’t get 

leggy, like garden varieties 

tend to do. Plants grow 30 

to 36cm high, with a high 

leaf yield. This basil has

category for its sweet, tender 

leaves and ornamental

Walking through Big Five country and sleeping out in the wild 

So you’re looking for somethng a little out of the ordinary. A little more adventurous.

you and found something spectacular for you to experience. An authentic wilderness 

adventure, where you can experience the beauty of the bush on foot and sleep out in 

the wild. A fly camping safari experience is the latest activity offered at Samara Private 

Game Reserve in the Great Karoo – arguably one of the most extraordinary areas of 

South Africa. 

Taking its name from the original safari days when explorers set up camp in big game 

country with little more than a flysheet protecting them from the elements, Samara’s 

fly camping activity remains true to these origins. 

WIth a maximum of six guests, your adventure begins with a guided bush walk 

through Big Five territory ... fret not ... the rangers are armed and they, and the trackers, 

are hugely experienced. Come dusk, you’ll arrive at your private camp, where your 

tents have already been set up (thank heavens ... imagine having to do that yourself 

after a long day walking in the bush!), and the fire ready to be lit. You’ll have (massively 

welcome, we’re sure) sundowners followed by a traditional South African braai – think 

boerewors, roosterbrood and grilled pineapple – cooked by the ranger and tracker 

team. You’ll spend the evening sitting round the campfire, sharing safari stories and 

listening to the nightly chorus of jackals, nightingales and the occasional lion roar, 

before retreating to bed. The next morning, you can continue your walk or drive back 

to the lodge. 

This fly camping safari is only available from October to May (excluding December 15 

to January 10) and is limited to guests who’ve booked a minimum three-night stay 

in one of Samara’s lodges. A R7 000 a night camping surcharge applies, although this 

charge is included in the cost if guests book a five-night conservation package. Prices 

include the services of a fully armed ranger and tracker. You do need to be 16 or older.
