8.3 Future of lohshilp<br />

Challenges and Suggestions<br />

The Lohshilp artisans believe that<br />

there is humongous scope for their<br />

craft to prosper. They wish for a wider<br />

reach, which they could get through<br />

right marketing. But, no one in their<br />

community is trained in that aspect.<br />

For years together, middlemen from<br />

cities have been involved, who have<br />

purchased wrought iron craft products<br />

from these artisans and sold them off in<br />

cities for much higher prices. This has<br />

proven to be a profitable deal for them,<br />

and they are wealthy today. Hence, this is<br />

a conflict that the artisans are not able to<br />

come out of unless they know marketing.<br />

8.4 Traces of the craft<br />

There have been traces and evidences<br />

found of the same craft in Madhya<br />

Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan.<br />

The Adivasis may have migrated from<br />

Bastar to these places in the past since<br />

Bastar was a part of Madhya Pradesh<br />

before separating to form Chhattisgarh,<br />

and there are Adivasis living in the<br />

Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra,<br />

which is adjacent to the former Bastar<br />

district. But, the master craftsman, Mr.<br />

Tiju Ram, is unaware of this fact.<br />

Mr. Tiju Ram has to pay 12 percent GST,<br />

annually. This has a huge impact on the<br />

finances of these craftsmen who struggle<br />

to make a good living.<br />

It would be a reasonable option for<br />

Lohshilp to have a dedicated online<br />

platform, through which its products are<br />

marketed and sold. This would provide<br />

a meaningful context to the craft, and<br />

is an effective way to reach out to a<br />

greater audience, nationally as well as<br />

internationally. Since, Mr. Tiju Ram<br />

is open to taking suggestions for new<br />

designs, according to the client’s choice,<br />

having an option on their website to<br />

customise, would arouse more interest in<br />

the prospective consumer.<br />
