Do the backcountry
like a boss
Are you up for a challenge? The
Idaho Peak Mountain Marathon is
one epic foot race with a 1.6 km
vertical elevation gain/loss that
takes place July 27. The locale is
the dramatic peaks and valleys
that were once scrambled
over by prospectors in the grip
of the silver rush of the 1890s.
Their century-old pack trails and
narrow-gauge railway lines that
were carved out along Carpenter
Creek and the New Denver canyons
lead the Mountain Marathon
racers up to spectacular Idaho
Peak. At the summit, splendid
views of Slocan Lake and the
Valhallas reward your effort. This
may just be the only mountain
marathon in North America which
involves using a cable car to
cross a creek! Register online
through kootenaysufferfest.com
Also brought to you by the forces
that created Kootenay Sufferfest
Stroll the waterfront
Glorious flowers and brilliant
sunshine, combined with a paved
path beside a clear mountain
lake makes the Nakusp waterfront
walkway a must do when visiting.
This recreation pathway is one
kilometre long, and stretches from
the downtown marina to a large
public beach. Along the walkway
are wonderful gardens, grassy
lawns, picnic areas and benches
on which to sit and admire the
view. There is even a concession
stand in the busier months. There
are informational signs and garden
structures along the way, encouraging
you to slow down, take
your time and smell the roses.
The walkway is wheelchair friendly
and can be accessed from
many points along the way. Take
a short stroll, or hike the whole
way – your spirits will be lifted.
Stroll through an old
growth forest
