Park 'n play Cottonwood Falls Park On Saturdays, in the warm months of the year, head to this park for the weekly outdoor market. Other days you'll find a beautiful serene area to stroll or rest in. Though surrounded by bustle, the sound of rushing water drowns out that noise. Designed to evoke the feeling a garden in Japan might bring you, it is known as the Friendship Garden and is the equivalent of a hug between Nelson and its sister city, Shuzenji, Shizuoka, Japan. The bridge crossing Cottonwood Creek is modeled after the larger bridge crossing the Katsura River in Japan. At the end of the park is a beautiful waterfall that is most spectacular May through July. Lakeside Park Located at the foot of the big orange bridge (BOB), this park is the place to swim, play soccer or tennis, or wander through the gardens and see what’s in bloom. A long, beautiful beach, wide promenade and large open green spaces and mature trees provide an expansive backdrop to your stroll or picnic stop. Let the kids loose at the Rotary children’s adventure playground in the middle. Take a meditative turn in the labyrinth nearby, or kick a ball around on the city playing fields. At the west end there is an ActNow seniors’ exercise area. Stroll the Centennial Pathway along the water and back to the beach. There is a summertime concession too. Gyro Park is located in the heart of Nelson next to the Hospital on Gyro Park Road. It's a bit of a climb, but once you make your way up to the park you are rewarded by a wide variety of native greenery, curving flower gardens, a gazebo, and spectacular views of the city below and the West Arm of Kootenay Lake. On a hot summer day, take yourself and your kids to the playground and wading pool. Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the day. Lions Spray Park is the perfect cool down venue for kids of all ages... There are shaded campsites, full hook-ups, showers, picnic tables, a covered dining shelter, a sani-station, and best of all, a terrific view of Kootenay Lake.
