Nelson
This small city
is perched on
the edge of a wilderness as vast as
any you’ll fi nd in southern Canada.
It attracts (and creates) a strong
contingent of skiers and mountain
bikers, hikers, climbers and paddlers
of all sorts. Despite its distance from
any major urban centre, Nelson has a
fl ourishing arts scene as well.
Any casual visitor to Nelson will see
that the visual arts are more and more
in the public sphere in this city. In
part that is due to the annual Mural
Festival which takes place August 16
– 18. Over one crazy paint splashing
weekend, artists in the alleyways will
express the sacred and the profane,
channelling the muse of the backcountry
athlete and theecologist, and
trailing culture riffs in colour over many
of this city’s historic walls.
Where do they, the artists and the extreme
sports lovers, mix it up? At the
craft brew pubs, and at the unique,
not-a-chain restaurants and bars in
Nelson’s very walkable downtown.
One warm summer night, put on
something lovely and step out on the
town. You’ll fi nd a surprisingly large
number of places to grab a bite, swill
a pint, or watch as your barkeep
tosses an original Kootenay
cocktail.
This small city enjoys dining at
perhaps more non-franchise-type
eateries per capita than any other
Canadian town. The same can be
said for the night clubs, retailers
and theatres. So much is original
and hancrafted, written,
produced and performed by
locals, locally. Nelson has got
talent baby!
Take in a world class performance
at the Capitol Theatre, or a classic
children’s film or even some
burlesque at the Civic. Scroll the
streets and introduce yourself to
the eclectic mix of independent
shops in Nelson, from booksellers,
and beads, handcrafted jewellery
or hand patina'd furniture, locally
designed phone cases, cards,
clothing... it would take the better
part of a week to know the ins and
outs of Nelson.
Set on the shores of the West Arm
of Kootenay Lake and surrounded
by the Selkirk mountain range,
Nelson is home to approximately
10,000 souls.
