RAVENSCROFT TAKES TO THE STREETS
FOR WEEK-LONG LITTER PICK
A sombrero and a car registration
plate were the most unusual items
found by Ravenscroft staff during a
week-long litter pick.
The investment services company
was the first to sign up this summer
to Pick It Up Guernsey’s Womble52
initiative which encourages local
business to choose a week of
the year and go out and pick up
rubbish from around the island.
‘The aim of Womble 52 is for us as
a community to come together
and do our bit to keep Guernsey
as litter free as possible. Pick It
Up Guernsey’s recent cigarette
collection was a huge success and
that has led to a growing interest
from people wanting to be involved.
I’m delighted that Ravenscroft,
which has been a great supporter,
has now signed up to Womble 52,’
said Andrew Munro, founder and
trustee of Pick It Up Guernsey.
‘Ravenscroft also purchased from us
litter pickers for their staff to borrow
when wombling as well as pocket
ashtrays which they are giving
out free to their staff. I hope more
companies will follow their lead.’
Ravenscroft sent out teams for 30
minutes every day for five days
and cleaned the streets around its
office in New Street. As well as the
NEW EVENT AIMS
TO REVIVE THE
ISLAND’S HISTORY
A new community event to
celebrate and bring to life the
island’s post-war culture will take
place from 27-29 September.
Created by Jeff Fox and Dennis
Le Prevost, the Guernsey Retro
Festival is a three-day event taking
inspiration from the 50s and 60s,
featuring classic motorcycles, cars,
music and fashion from the era.
With a variety of entertainment and
a local food festival, it is hoped the
event will attract all age groups, as
well as visitors, while also raising
money for local charities Mind,
Mug and Men’s Shed .
Jeff and Dennis came up with
the idea as part of the Guernsey
sombrero and registration plate,
glass and plastic bottles, takeaway
containers, tin cans, cigarette
packets, wrappers and hundreds of
cigarette butts were also collected.
‘It was surprising just how much
was collected over the week.
Places that had been cleaned one
day then had litter in them the next
day. It was an eye opener for all
the Ravenscroft staff who went out
during the week and we had some
great feedback from people who
saw us out and about and thanked
us for taking the time to keep
St Peter Port clean,’ said Sophie
Gordon, head of Ravenscroft’s
sports and social club.
Katrina Bray and Shannon Lancaster are
Tourism Ideathon where they won
the ‘Pure Innovation’ category.
The weekend will be a celebration
of the end of austerity with
dancing, motorcycles, cars, music
and dressing up – it was a real
golden period of our heritage and
we are looking forward to bringing
that back to life.
The Festival is being supported by
Specsavers. Jeff said: ‘Specsavers
epitomises everything we want
in a partner. They are extremely
professional with a big heart when
it comes to local projects.’
Dame Mary Perkins, co-founder
of Specsavers, said: ‘At Specsavers
we value the community and are
always looking for ways to support
those around us. This will be a
fantastic event for Guernsey which
we hope will be enjoyed by many
islanders and visitors alike.’
ST SAMPSON’S HIGH
SCHOOL WINS FIRST
CENTRAL’S ROBOT
OLYMPICS
To mark Women in Technology Day,
16 students from Ladies’ College and
St Sampson’s High School teamed
up to hold an Olympic-style event
with EV3 Lego robots.
The programme, co-constructed by
First Central Group, saw four teams
of year nine students' compete to
code their robots to complete three
different sporting events; lacrosse,
shot put, dressage, and for the grand
finale – a synchronised dance.
The aim of the session was to
develop the student’s creative
problem solving, engineering
and coding skills. The winning
team was from St Sampson’s High
School, but all the teams' robots
who competed managed to throw
some excellent shapes on the
digital dance floor.
Digital Greenhouse held the event
as part of the Digital Innovators
Programme, which they devised
with First Central as a way of
developing opportunities for
young people to engage with
digital technologies.
Lucy Kirby, Head of Digital at the
Digital Greenhouse, said: ‘The
Digital Innovators Programme has
shown that there is a really high level
of innovation and digital creativity
on the island. It’s great to be able
to work with companies, like First
Central, to help young people build
and develop these essential critical
thinking, problem solving and
collaborative skills for their futures.’
Two representatives from First
Central were also on hand to offer
their technical expertise. Lisa Le
Huray, Quality Assurance Analyst
from First Central, said: ‘I would
have loved the opportunity to
attend an event like this when I was
a student. I always knew I wanted
to work in technology, so this
would have been a great initiative
to take part in.
‘It’s inspiring to see that there are
lots of bright young women who
are interested in a digital career. It
was incredible to see how quickly
they all picked up coding the
robots and I hope some of them
decide on an exciting career in
technology!’
