GOING TO THE NORTH YORKSHIRE MOORS?
If ever there was a place to get away from it
all, whether you’re looking for rolling dales,
magnificent moors or a panoramic and
rugged coastline, the North York Moors is
the real deal. And, with Aurigny’s flights from
Guernsey to Leeds Bradford or Manchester,
getting there has never been easier.
The moors themselves, covering more than
500 square miles, are one of the most expansive
stretches of heather moorland in the United
Kingdom - a sweeping domain of fresh air
and sense of escape that will put you back in
touch with all Mother Nature has to offer.
The moors were designated a National Park
back in 1952, stretching from the Cleveland Hills
in the north and west to Vale of Pickering in
the south, encompassing some of the region’s
most beautiful historical towns including
Helmsley, Guisborough and Malton.
If you’re an ambitious outdoor adventurer there’s
no shortage of things to do, from a hike up fell
and down dale to a mountain bike ride through
ever-changing landscape so vast you’ll feel
you’re the king or queen of your own world.
But if your plan is to take things at a
much slower pace, this really is the place
to take it all in one step at a time.
The moors themselves include forests and
ancient woodlands that are home to roe deer,
badgers, owls, turtle doves and more, while once
you reach the raw cliffs and coast you may spot
seals, dolphins and even whales out to sea.
THE MOORS THEMSELVES,
SQUARE MILES, ARE ONE OF THE
MOST EXPANSIVE STRETCHES OF
HEATHER MOORLAND IN THE
UNITED KINGDOM
While, come nightfall, the lack of light pollution
means it’s all eyes to the skies as a celestial
light show puts you at one with the universe
as you contemplate your day’s achievements
and the possibilities tomorrow has in store.
If all that sounds a bit ethereal, worry not, you’ll be
grounded by how much there is to do in each of the
small urban centres, including arguably the epitome
of a picture-postcard English town: Helmsley.
From the thriving market square to the ruins of
the ancient castle, you’ll have lots to see and do,
and plenty of excuses to stop and reflect as you
work your way through cake or afternoon tea in
one of the town’s traditional tea rooms where
service is delivered with old-school charm.
