- STILL GOING STRONG 125 YEARS ON
There aren’t many organisations anywhere that began life in the 19th century and are still
going strong today. But Guernsey Medical Practice IslandHealth, which this year celebrates
a notable anniversary, is one that’s in excellent health 125 years after its origin in 1894.
FIRST PARTNER, DR VALENTINE GIBSON
In medicine, many things have
changed beyond recognition
in that period but some of the
fundamentals have remained
constant. At the heart of good
clinical practice is the patient
describing their circumstances
to their doctor and the GP then
drawing on expert medical
knowledge, years of training and
a good understanding of their
patient to deliver treatments
that help. That trusted doctor/
patient relationship was vital
in the 1890s and remains
vital at IslandHealth today.
IslandHealth didn’t start out
under that name, (more recently
many islanders will be more
familiar with the ‘L’Aumone and
St Sampson’s surgery’ name), but
an unbroken line of partners can
be traced back to Dr Valentine
Gibson who started it all from
number 16 Hauteville in St
Peter Port in August 1894.
In addition to its L’Aumone and
St Sampson’s sites, IslandHealth
also has a Town surgery at Frances
House in La Plaiderie and has
a headcount of more than 80
people including 19 doctors,
12 nurses and a large support
team that makes sure the patient
experience is as good as it can
be. In addition, physiotherapy,
osteopathy, hearing services,
podiatry and psychological
therapy are also offered at
IslandHealth premises. L’Aumone
and St Sampson’s have busy
pharmacies on their sites too.
The current Chairman, Dr Paul
