DINING IN GASTOWN
PRINCE OF WHALES WHALE WATCHING ORCA OCEAN TOUR
WATER STREET GASTOWN
GETTING THERE
FROM GUERNSEY
Air Transat and WestJet’s direct flights
to Vancouver depart from Gatwick at the
respectable times of 10:10 and 10:55,
so you can have breakfast at your hotel
or in the airport before you fly.
Air Transat’s return flight leaves at 14:55,
landing at 08:25, whilst WestJet leaves at
16:55, landing at 10:30. Either way, should
you arrive in time to catch an earlier
Aurigny flight home than the one you
have booked, you can enquire about our
Flight Forward service.
WHAT TO DO
Discovering Vancouver by bike is ideal: the city is
criss-crossed with cycle paths and many hotels have
bikes available to borrow, or you can rent one from
Cycle City Tours. Soak up the culture in Gastown and
Chinatown; Gastown is Vancouver’s oldest district
and is full of Victorian buildings housing boutiques,
art galleries and pubs. Entering Chinatown through
the Millennium Gate, you’ll see Chinese restaurants,
tea shops and markets lining the streets, while
traditional Chinese gardens are a peaceful oasis.
Established in 1886, Stanley Park is surrounded by
the waters of English Bay and Vancouver Harbour,
and is best explored by bicycle. Enjoy the spectacular
views and look out for wildlife such as racoons,
beavers and blue herons. To really appreciate the
scope of Vancouver’s natural beauty, take a seaplane
flight over the city and its surroundings. There are a
number of options, from 10-minute loops to 45-minute
flights over the region’s parks, beaches and coastline.
Vancouver has nine beaches – one on a freshwater
lake, the rest beside the ocean. Some beaches are
designated ‘quiet’ zones, such as Sunset Beach at
the mouth of False Creek, and Spanish Banks West,
which has picnic tables and allows barbecues. Others,
such as Kitsilano Beach and English Bay Beach, are a
hive of activity for families, featuring heated saltwater
pools, tennis courts and water sport facilities.
Lying between Vancouver and Vancouver Island,
the Strait of Georgia is home to several resident orca
pods, along with migratory grey and humpback
whales between June and October. Sea lions,
porpoises, otters, seals and bald eagles are also
frequently sighted. A boat trip out on the strait gives
you close views of the wildlife, with a professional
guide pointing out the species you encounter.
Set on Vancouver’s far western coast, the glass
walls of the University of British Columbia’s Museum
of Anthropology provide vistas of the surrounding
woodland and the Salish Sea. The museum holds
a vast collection of artefacts and exhibitions
related to world arts and cultures, specifically the
First Nations peoples native to the region.
Located 75 miles from Vancouver, Whistler frequently
ranks as one of the world’s top-five winter ski
destinations. Skiing and snowboarding are the main
activities in winter, but in summer the lifts keep running
to provide some of the world’s finest mountain biking,
highline hiking and other outdoor activities, as well as
North America’s best summer skiing. So, you might
choose to spend some time in the mountains as well as
the city – or maybe save Whistler for your next
Canadian adventure.
