New festival in Plain City

Chalk it up to creativity

By Kristy Zurbrick

Madison Editor

There are art festivals,

and then there are

chalk art festivals.

“One of the things

that is truly unique

about a chalk art festival

is that you get to see

people making art,” said

Hilary Frambes. “You

get to see the process

and talk to and interact

with the artists.”

Frambes, an awardwinning

artist and community

art educator, is

bringing that unique experience

to Plain City

with the first-ever Plain

City Chalk Art Festival.

The event, which

comes complete with

live music and food trucks, is set for 10 a.m.-

6 p.m. Sept. 14 at Bicentennial Park in the

heart of the village near the historic clock

tower. Admission is free.

art at festivals. Along

the way, she has made

many friends in the

chalk art community.

“I thought it would

be fun to bring a chalk

art festival here because

there isn’t one in this

area,” she said. “I was

shooting for eight or 10

artists. I was thrilled to

end up with 13.”

Frambes will be creating

artwork that day,

too, bringing the tally to

14. Most of the artists

are from Ohio, but a few

are from Michigan and

Indiana.

“Some of them are

like me where art is

their main gig, and then

we have some who have

9-to-5 jobs during the week and do this on

the weekends,” Frambes said.

All of artists will get started on their

Transporting local veterans to D.C. war memorials

Kristy Zurbrick

Madison Editor

Terry Mackey, a retired Marine from

West Jefferson, traveled to Washington

D.C. last year with military veterans from

Logan County to visit the various war memorials.

He was so moved by the experience

that he is coordinating a similar trip for

Madison County veterans.

Mackey has teamed up with Madison

County Veterans Services. The plan is to

charter a motor coach for a three-day trip

over a weekend in September of next year.

The exact dates are not yet set.

The trip will be much like those offered

by Honor Flight, an organization that transports

veterans to Washington D.C. by plane

for a one-day, there-and-back visit to the

war memorials. By comparison, the threeday

bus trip offers a slower-paced alternative

for veterans who do not wish to fly,

Mackey said.

The “Madison County Veterans to D.C.”

bus will depart from London on a Friday

morning. Veterans will spend Saturday visiting

Arlington National

Cemetery, the Tomb of

the Unknown Soldier,

the Iwojima statue, and

the memorials for the

various wars. The group

will head back to London

on Sunday morning.

Participating veterans will be treated to

transportation, meals and lodging throughout

the trip.

“The veterans won’t pay anything.

They’ve paid enough, in my opinion,” said

Mackey, who serves as a driver for Madison

County Veterans Services and is commander

of Madison County Disabled Veterans

of America Chapter 19.

The trip is open to Madison County veterans

of World War II, the Korean Conflict,

and the Vietnam War era who were honorably

discharged.

“Any veteran is welcome, but our preference

is for those who have not already visited

the memorials in Washington D.C.,”

Mackey said.

“The veterans won’t pay anything.

They’ve paid enough, in

my opinion.”

–Terry Mackey, organizer of

Madison County Veterans to D.C.

The bus will have

room for approximately

27 veterans plus their

companions, a nurse,

and volunteers. Each

veteran is welcome to

bring one companion.

While the veteran travels

at no charge, the companion must pay

$250, which covers their transportation,

lodging and meals. The cost is the same for

volunteers.

Applications for veterans and companions

are due by June 30, 2020. They can be

found at madisoncountyvetstodc.org.

The cost to sponsor a veteran for the trip

is $300. Mackey is in the process of raising

funds to cover those costs. So far, he has

collected $1,400. His goal is $15,000. The

motor coach service alone costs $5,000, he

said. He would like to have most of the

funds gathered by May or June so he can

put down deposits on the motor coach and

the hotel rooms.

Tax-deductible donations can be sent to:

Madison County Veterans to D.C.,” 984

London Rd., West Jefferson, OH 43162. Any

amount of donation is welcome, he said.

“We’re also working on some fundraisers,”

he added.

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7005 in

West Jefferson and American Legion Post

105 in London will be hosting events. Details

are forthcoming.

Mackey is putting together several special

touches for the trip. Each veteran will

receive a commemorative hat and an embroidered

shirt. He hopes to arrange for a

motorcade escort for the trip’s departure.

“I’m also going to talk to the schools to

have students write letters about what a

veteran means to them, and then we’ll have

mail call on the bus,” he said.

Mackey is traveling with the Logan

County group again later this month to

gather information for further planning for

the Madison County trip. He hopes to make

the Madison County trip an annual event.

For more information, contact Mackey at

ere’s a new bull on the block at Battelle Darby

By Andrea Cordle

Staff Editor

Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park welcomed a new bison to its

herd.

In mid-August, a 2-year-old male bison arrived at the park from

The Wilds in Cumberland, Ohio. He will not be a permanent part

of the herd, but rather a visiting bull that will stay for about a year.

He has one goal—to reproduce.

The bull has joined

the seven female bison

already at the Metro

Park.

“The herd was very

accepting of him,” said Kevin Kasnyik, park manager at Battelle

Darby Creek Metro Park. “He fit right in. There were no issues.”

In 2011, the park introduced six female bison to roam on nearly

50 acres of prairie grass. In 2013, the park introduced its first male

to mate with the female bison. In 2014, the first calf was born at

Battelle Darby Creek.

According to Kasnyik, the last visiting male impregnated five

bison.

“We thought we had four calves with the

introduction of the last male, but we were

surprised with a fifth one,” said Kasnyik.

According to the park manager, some of

the calves born at Battelle Darby Creek remain

with the herd, while others are sent to

The Wilds.

“We have a really nice relationship with

The Wilds,” said Kasnyik.

A female bison can carry a baby for about

nine months. There is usually just one calf

but occasionally there are twins. Calves are

born in the spring and summer. They weigh

approximately 45 pounds at birth.

According to the park’s manager, the

bison receive a vet checkup in the fall and in

the spring.

“We will do our best to see if any of them

are pregnant, but sometimes you just don’t

know until they have the calf,” said Kasnyik.

“We’ll have a good idea though.”

Since the introduction of the bison at

Battelle Darby Creek Park, the park has

seen an increase in visitors trying to catch a

glimpse of North America’s largest land

mammal.

“They provide a great photo opportunity,”

said Kasnyik. “They are majestic to look at.”

The park hosts a public bison program

once a month in addition to working with

many school groups.

“The bison give us a great opportunity for

education,” said Kasnyik.

The bison also help the life cycle in the

park’s prairie. The park’s staff will mow and

start prairie fires to prevent invasive

species, but the bison play a large role in

“I can move better and sleep better. I am in

a much better mood. I can do more with my

family and I’m actually looking forward to

the summer so I can work in my yard. I’m

looking forward to retirement now!” R.H.

maintaining the prairie. According to Kasnyik, destruction is part

of what is needed to keep the prairie thriving. The size alone of the

bison helps in that aspect. Bison also graze and produce manure

that brings in insects important to the environment.

“The bison and the environment come together,” said Kasnyik.

10x10-feet. Most come with an image in mind; some freestyle.

Frambes said visitors can expect to see anything from portraits of

famous people to fantastical creatures. It could be anything,

Frambes said.

“You will see these drawings come alive throughout the day,”

she said.

Visitors will have a chance to do a little chalk art themselves in

the children’s chalk area. Despite the name, adults are welcome,

too, Frambes said. Chalk will be provided.

Complementing the art is a line-up of live music, starting with

solo acoustic act Byrd Manring, a Plain City resident, who will play

a variety of tunes from 10 a.m. to noon. A Bassic Approach II, a duo

from the Columbus area, will play everything from The Beatles to

Soundgarden from noon to 2 p.m. The Haz Benz, a four-piece band

that includes drummer Jeff Frambes of Plain City, will take the

stage from 2 to 6 p.m., playing classic rock from the 1960s’ to the

‘90s.

Three food trucks will be on site throughout the day: The Smiling

Daisy Bus offering breakfast and lunch options, Coffee Connections

of Plain City offering beverages, and Fuller Flavor Curbside

Grill offering hamburgers, hotdogs and more.

The Uptown Plain City Organization is the event’s main sponsor.

Several businesses also are lending support.

Village starts to define its brand with new logo

Kristy Zurbrick

Madison Editor

The village of West Jefferson has a new

logo.

Gone is the eagle clutching a banner emblazoned

with the town’s name and incorporation

date.

The new logo, designed by 7Forty Designs

out of London, features images of a

family, the village hall, and leaves.

“We want to get across the message of

‘live here, work here, grow here,’” said

Mayor Ray Martin about the new logo.

“With new developments coming, we need to

brand ourselves to be attractive to industry

and the people coming here. We wanted a

logo that tells you something about our community.”

The old logo was approved by council in

2009. The new logo was approved by council

on Sept. 3, but not before a couple of council

members expressed their disappointment

that the logo showed up on village vehicles

and promotional materials before the vote

was taken.

Steve Johnston, council president, took

responsibility for the logo being used ahead

West Jefferson’s new logo

of the vote. He said he “overstepped his

bounds” and it was his mistake. Logo options

had been considered during village development

committee meetings.

Martin apologized, too. He had the logo

printed on sleeves for canned and bottled

beverages.

“I apologize for my part in it. I got excited

about it and went a little fast,” he said.

Council member Mike Conway likes the

logo but was unhappy that it was used before

council’s approval.

“That really upset me... We have a

process and procedure in place and that’s

not being followed,” he said.

Grant funding support

for small local businesses

Cultivate, an Ohio non-profit providing

workspace and targeted services for entrepreneurs,

Department of Agriculture (USDA) to serve

small and emerging businesses in Madison

County.

Cultivate is working with the city of London,

Madison County Chamber of Commerce,

Madison County Community Improvement

Corp., Downtown London Association and

other area organizations to support and attract

entrepreneurs in the community.

The USDA grant is providing $160,657

in education and support to Madison

County entrepreneurs, with $69,247 of

those funds provided by the USDA. The

West Jefferson’s old logo

Council member Howard Wade Jr. said

he agreed with Conway’s comment.

Council voted 7-0 to accept the new logo.

The logo will appear on village letterhead

and other documents, as well as promotional

materials and village vehicles. The

village paid $2,000 for the logo development

and a software package for reproducing the

logo in various forms.

In other business, council approved the

annexation of 2.272 acres into the village

from Jefferson Township. The land is located

on the west end of town, between the

new State Route 29 intersection and Enterprise

Parkway, on the south side of U.S.

Route 40.

West Jefferson Plumbing & Heating submitted

the annexation request. The company

plans to move its operations from the

east end of town to the annexed property.

Council also approved a contract with

Choice One Engineering for plan preparation,

bidding procedures, and construction

services for the village’s 2020 asphalt resurfacing

project. The contract is for $15,100.

The village is seeking resumes from individuals

interested in serving as clerk of

council. Debbie Dileo will be leaving the position

soon. Johnston said the job requirements

are on par with that of a paralegal;

the person who holds the job deals with

everything from annexations to tax incentives.

“Debbie has definitely been an asset to

this council and the village,” Johnston said.

The parks and recreation department

will host a concert from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sept.

10 at the West Jefferson Community Center,

230 Cemetery Rd. Purk & Jones will perform.

Trunk-or-treat will take place at the

community center from 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 26.

The next village council meeting is at 7

p.m. Sept. 16.

Ohio Law requires the publication of unpaid real

estate and manufactured home taxes each year.

The names of all delinquent taxpayers will be

TOLLER

James Robert Toller, 46, of Jeffersonville died on Aug. 17, 2019.

He was born in London on Dec. 21, 1972, to John Robert and Janet

Louise (Clifford) Toller. He is survived by: his mother of London;

wife, Amanda L. (Gilliam) Toller; children, Cheyanna Oliver,

Christopher Oliver and Matthew Gilliam; sister-in-law, Teresa

Toller of London; niece, Jordyn Toller of London; nephews, Kyle

Wilson and Justin Wilson, both of Washington Court House,

Cameron Wilson of Grove City; and best friend, Jonathan Brady of

Addressing bullying with jazz and chocolate

By Theresa Hennis

Staff Writer

David Wells, a jazz instrumentalist from

West Virginia, will perform his Chocolate

Jazz Concert on Sept. 15 at Newport United

Methodist Church. The event includes

music and a variety of chocolate desserts.

Wells, whose stage name is Dave Bond,

has shared the stage with top artists in the

“smooth jazz” genre. He performs Chocolate

Jazz concerts to help fund his non-profit

Chocolate Jazz Foundation. The foundation’s

mission is to educate everyone, especially

children, about bullying. Wells was

bullied when he was in school, so he knows

the pain children experience at the hands of

bullies in school and on social media.

“I held my first Chocolate Jazz Concert

in Canada,” Wells said. “It’s been my focus

for the past four years.”

When Wells performed in central Ohio

several years ago, he reached out to area

churches to ask if they would welcome a

concert. Wayne Stuntz, currently the pastor

at Newport United Methodist Church, invited

Wells to perform at the church where

he was pastor at the time. The two have remained

friends for the past 15 years.

“Dave is a gifted performer and a Christian

who truly cares,” Stuntz said. “He

played at my daughter’s wedding, and we

even discovered he is a distant relative of

my son-in-law.”

The work Wells does on behalf of chil-

T

T

dren touched Stuntz’s heart. Stuntz has

counseled children who come to him to talk

about how they have been bullied.

“Bullying is so prevalent through social

media, and it’s harder there, I think, because

bullies can say whatever they want,

and they don’t have to do it face-to-face,” he

said. “It’s easier to hide behind a profile because

they can be anonymous.”

At the age of 9, Wells began learning to

play flugelhorn and trumpet, and he made

his professional music debut at the age of

13. Wells was raised in Dallas, Texas. His

dad is a Baptist minister, and he has seven

brothers and sisters.

“I went to a school where all the kids had

nice clothes and cars. Our family wasn’t as

fortunate, and the kids made fun of my appearance,”

Wells said. “I didn’t fit in, and it

got so bad that I left school, got a job, and

paid for my own private schooling.”

Bullying didn’t stop just because Wells

grew up. Even after successfully releasing

15 solo projects, charting 12 singles in the

Top 20 on the national jazz charts, creating

a nationally syndicated weekly radio show

in 50 different markets across the country,

and becoming a Nashville promoter, he still

endures bullying on social media for speaking

out against it.

And Wells isn’t the only person in his

family who has been bullied.

“My daughter got bullied in high school,”

he said. “To hear the stories of the kids

idd Fa

mily Funeral Homes

and Crematory

Fr

riends

who’ve been bullied breaks your heart.”

He talked to another parent at a doctor

appointment, and she told him her child saw

another child being bullied at his school, and

when he went to the principal to report it,

they told him to mind his own business.

“The problem is that 85 percent of bullying

has no intervention. The parents aren’t

stepping up, the kids that see it don’t step

up, and administration doesn’t step up. You

have to take care of the problem right

away,” Wells said.

When Wells speaks at schools, he educates

students on techniques to prevent bullying,

shares stories about bullying, and

talks about how to help someone who is

being bullied.

The Chocolate Jazz Concert is set for 3

p.m. Sept. 15 at Newport United Methodist

Church, 80 Center St. SE, London. A

freewill offering will be taken to support the

Chocolate Jazz Foundation.

Wells also will perform during worship

services that same day—at 9:45 a.m. at Newport

United Methodist Church and at 11:15

a.m. at Lafayette United Methodist Church,

61 Second Ave. SE, London. Stuntz serves

as pastor at both churches and invites the

public to attend.

For details, call Newport United Methodist

Church at (740) 852-9408 or Lafayette United

Methodist Church at 852-3613.

Saved by the Belt Club

www.madisonmessengernews.com

London resident Samantha Johns and

her 1-year-old daughter, Lyric, joined Ohio’s

“Saved by the Belt Club” on Aug. 22. Their

safety belts saved them from being seriously

injured or killed in a crash. The incident occurred

on June 30 on State Route 665 in

Fairfield Township in Madison County.

Lt. Robert Curry, commander of West

Jefferson’s Ohio Highway Patrol Post, presented

Samantha and Lyric with “Saved by

the Belt” certificates signed by Ohio Department

of Public Safety Director Thomas J.

Stickrath and Col. Richard S. Fambro, Patrol

superintendent.

“Samantha and Lyric are living testimony

to the effectiveness of safety belts,”

Curry said.

In Ohio in 2018, 419 people were killed

in traffic crashes where a safety belt was

available but not in use.

The “Saved by the Belt Club” is a joint effort

by the Ohio Department of Public

Safety and more than 400 Ohio law enforcement

agencies. The club is designed to recognize

people who have benefited from their

decision to wear safety belts.

Samantha also received a “Saved by the

Belt” license plate bracket.
