<strong>2019</strong> South Dakota Nurses Association<br />
The South Dakota Center for Nursing Workforce, initially funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation,<br />
was established in 1996 as the SD Colleagues in Caring Project. At the completion of the grant in 2002, state<br />
legislation was enacted in the Nurse Practice Act. This legislation, SDCL 36-9-95 and 36-9-96, created the<br />
Center and placed the South Dakota Board of Nursing as the lead agency for the Center. The mission of the<br />
Center is to design a nursing workforce prepared to partner with South Dakota citizens to meet their changing<br />
health needs. The Center is responsible for addressing issues regarding supply, demand, and need for nurses.<br />
Activities and accomplishments:<br />
• Maintain database on the supply, demand, and need for nurses in the state.<br />
• Present on topics relevant to the workforce and publish workforce related articles and reports; including<br />
the biennial workforce supply reports: South Dakota Nursing Workforce Supply and Employment<br />

• Maintain a website to provide nurses and employers with current data on nursing workforce.<br />
• Offer Nursing Leadership Academy in partnership with EmBe. The goal of the academy is to facilitate the<br />
development of emerging nursing leaders by utilizing the experiences and skills of established nurses and<br />
community leaders to extend a hand-up to those nurses who follow. This program is currently being held<br />
in Aberdeen; previously held in Rapid City and Sioux Falls.<br />
• Held a Strategic Planning event on April 30, <strong>2019</strong> with over 100 nurses and stakeholders attending. The<br />
outcomes of this planning session will assist the Board in developing the Center’s strategic plan.<br />
o The event featured keynote speaker Dr. Peter Buerhaus, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, a nationally known expert<br />
and economist on workforce, presented current research findings and employment trends on the<br />
nation’s nursing workforce. SD specific data was also presented, including current information on the<br />
state’s nursing supply and employment characteristics, nursing education programs, and RN and LPN<br />
graduates.<br />
o In the afternoon attendees participated in a World Café focusing on what direction SD needs to take<br />
to ensure we have a strong future for nursing. Participants completed three rounds of questions, after<br />
each round key themes were harvested.<br />
Round 1: Given what you heard this morning and your own experiences, what key trends are affecting<br />
the future of nursing in South Dakota and why?<br />
Round 2: Based on what we just heard in the reports from the tables, what does South Dakota need<br />
to focus on in nursing workforce development?<br />
Round 3: What immediate, intermediate and long-term actions should the Center for Nursing<br />
Workforce be taking to ensure a strong future for nursing care in South Dakota?<br />
