De todas partes del mundo, gente viene
a Costa Rica por una variedad de razones.
La forma en que llegan también varía
dependiendo de dónde vienen y por qué
viajan. La gran mayoría de los viajeros,
ingresan al país por uno de los aeropuertos
internacionales, ya sea en Alajuela o Liberia.
Solo unos pocos optan por el viaje más
arduo por tierra a través de la Carretera
Panamericana.

Cuando decidí salir de los Estados Unidos en
noviembre del 2016, sabía que iba a viajar
por tierra. No tenía intención de regresar, así
que quería llevar conmigo la mayor cantidad
de artículos personales posible y tener mi
vehículo cuando llegara. El destino final era
Costa Rica, pero planeé tomarme mi tiempo y
visitar de nuevo en el camino, algunos viejos
lugares de vacaciones en México. Ya había
conducido hasta el sur de ese país antes y
razoné que algunas millas adicionales rumbo
a Costa Rica eran factibles.
A veces, actuar por impulso puede funcionar
bien; pero si quiere emigrar a un país
extranjero, ayuda investigar un poco antes.
Reunir los documentos requeridos para
solicitar la residencia en Costa Rica requiere
tiempo y esfuerzo y son válidos sólo durante
seis meses a partir de la fecha de emisión.
No descubrí esto hasta que ya estaba fuera
de los Estados Unidos. También ayuda tener
un conocimiento práctico del español para
facilitar los cruces fronterizos y resolver los
eventos imprevistos.
Conducir a Costa Rica desde los Estados
Unidos resultó una aventura única que agregó
una colorida historia de fondo a mi nueva vida
en el paraíso. También me permite ofrecer
consejos a otros que estén considerando
hacerlo. Probablemente no necesite tracción
de cuatro ruedas, pero es bueno tenerlo.
Necesitará alguna forma de GPS para la
navegación, principalmente a través de las
ciudades más grandes. La señalización en
carreteras es a menudo desconcertante o
inexistente. Evite conducir de noche. Sonría y
sea paciente con las autoridades. Finalmente,
yo soy un hombre de 1,80 m y me salí con la
mía, pero no recomendaría hacer el viaje solo.
Planifique con anticipación, investigue un
poco y prepárese para lo inesperado. ¡Buen

From all over
People come to Costa Rica from all over the
globe, for a variety of reasons. How they
get here also varies, depending on where
they make the journey from, and why. The
vast majority of travelers enter the country
through one of the international airports in
Alejuela or Liberia. Only a few opt for the
more arduous journey overland via the Pan
American Highway.
When I decided to leave the USA in November
2016, I knew I would be driving. There was
no intention of returning, so I wanted to
take as many personal items as possible and
have my vehicle when I arrived. The ultimate
destination was Costa Rica, but I planned to
take my time and revisit some old vacation
haunts in Mexico along the way. I had driven
to southern Mexico before and reasoned that
a few extra miles to Costa Rica were doable.
Sometimes acting on impulse can work out
fine; if you want to emigrate to a foreign
country, it helps to do a little research. The
documents required to apply for residency in
Costa Rica take time and effort to accumulate
and are only valid for six months from the
date of issue. I didn’t find this out until I
had already left the US. It also helps to
have a working knowledge of Spanish to
facilitate border crossings and unforeseen
developments.
Driving here from the United States was
a once in a lifetime adventure that adds a

colorful backstory to my new life in paradise.
It also allows me to offer advice to others
considering doing it. You probably won’t need
four-wheel drive, but it’s nice to have it. You
will need some form of GPS for navigation,
primarily through larger cities. Signage is
often bewildering or non-existent. Avoid
driving at night. Smile and be patient with
authorities. Finally, I’m a six-foot male, and I
got away with it, but I wouldn’t recommend
making the trip alone. Plan ahead, do some
research and expect the unexpected. Buen
