Fall in the Florida isn’t quite the
same as in states that are farther
north. We don’t get the golden
leaves of autumn or brisk nights. Our
temps take a slight bow to the season
by dropping from the 90s to the 80s.
Lovebugs show up in droves, and the
humidity is ever-present. Though we
don’t get traditional fall weather, it
doesn’t mean we don’t enjoy the season’s
traditions just as much as those
in cooler states.
One of my favorite traditions
this time of year is decorating for
Halloween using carved pumpkins.
It’s an activity that can be enjoyed
by the entire family, creating
unique art and lasting memories.
Follow these tips to make the most
out of your pumpkin traditions and
help your masterpiece survive in the
Florida climate.
Creating the perfect pumpkin display
starts at the very beginning.
Choosing the right pumpkin is essential.
Look for one that has a large,
greenish stem. The older the pumpkin
is, the more dried out the stem
will be, turning it brown and brittle.
Pumpkin picking and carving are fun family-bonding events.
HOW TO ...
Carve a Pumpkin
Create the Perfect Jack-O’-Lantern!
by Lauren Salinero
A green stem indicates it is still fresh
and will last longer. Plan ahead according
to what type of pumpkin will
be best for your work. Don’t dismiss
the oddly shaped or “ugly” pumpkins.
They can often turn out to look
the best. Also, choose your pumpkin
based on what type of design or artwork
you’ll be doing. You may want
a taller pumpkin with a flat surface
area instead of a shorter, round one.
Or, you may go for a more uniform
shape. You might gravitate toward
the traditional orange pumpkins or
try a white one.
Regardless of when you purchase
your pumpkin, wait to carve into it
until you actually want to display
it. A whole pumpkin will last significantly
longer than one that has been
cut into. There are several options for
what type of art you’ll do. Carving
is the traditional method, but stenciling
and painting are alternatives that
will keep your pumpkin intact, and
the creative options are endless.
A basic carving kit works great for
adults and kids, and they are cheap
to buy at any local store. You may
want to use a metal spoon to scrape
out the filling. You’ll want to get the
inside as clean as you can. Any bits
of pumpkin filling left over will mold.
Some experts suggest cutting a hole
in the bottom of the pumpkin, or
even the back of it, to keep it fresh.
Cutting out the stem will
dry it out quicker. Another
reason to cut the bottom
is a lot of the seeds and
juice will fall out easily.
Once your pumpkin
is cleaned out and the
walls are scraped to your
desired thickness, draw
the pattern you’re going
to use or trace it from a
paper template. Keep
the pumpkin as intact as
you can while you go.
Keeping it together until
you’re done will keep the
design steady and not
lead to breakage where
you don’t want it.
You’ll also want to
take steps to preserve
your pumpkin for as
long as possible after
you’ve carved it. First, you’ll want
to soak your pumpkin in ice water
with bleach. Only add about 1 teaspoon
of bleach per gallon of water.
Soak the pumpkin for up to 24
hours. Next, rub inside the pumpkin
and around the cuttings with petroleum
jelly. The Vaseline will keep it
from drying out too fast. Spray the
pumpkin with water daily to keep
it hydrated, and store it in a fridge
or other cool place when you aren’t
displaying it.
Carving or decorating a pumpkin
is a great family activity. Spending
quality time with your children while
creating a work of art is a memorable
tradition. As with all kids activities,
safety must come first. Be sure
to always supervise children when
working with carving tools. Also, use
an LED candle instead of a flame
candle to prevent unwanted burns.
Whether your finished product is
carved to perfection or barely recognizable,
I hope you’ll create memories
that will make you want to carve
pumpkins every year and display
your masterpiece with pride. ª

Three years before my mother died,
she prepared a last will that distributed
her assets equally to each her 4 children.
After she died, in his attempt to disinherit
everyone but himself, my brother
produced a new last will leaving everything
to himself which he used to file a probate.
The new will was prepared the day before
my mother died. We learned of the new
will when each of the siblings received a
letter from the probate attorney naming our
brother personal representative and sole heir. What actions can my other brother,
sister and I take to prove the new will is fraudulent?
Inheritance wars are like horrible scares that occur during Halloween Fright
Night when hibernating rivalries between siblings’ surface from their Sleepy Hollows
like Headless Horsemen intent upon decapitating the rights of other beneficiaries
and stealing it as their own. Naively, parents believe their children profoundly love
one another without any idea that animosity, bitterness and bad blood between
siblings over perceived wrongs from their distant pasts can erupt into future hostility.
Hostility begins when parents choose one child they believe will be the most
responsible as executor of their estate and will distribute the assets to beneficiaries
according to the parent’s wishes. Unfortunately, more often than imaginable, an
executor often manipulates, forges, recreates, or disposes of original will documents
in order to gain a larger portion, if not all, of the estate inheritance.
Sadly, in today’s electronic age, it is easy to manipulate estate documents. There
are many signs of fraudulent manipulation by an executor or beneficiary intending
The Headless Horseman
by: Kristen M. Jackson / Attorney
to steal from others named to receive inheritance. Consider the following
examples of fraudulent actions that signify dishonest behavior by beneficiaries
or non-beneficiaries.
• Deliberately Disposing of a Will to force a court decision. If one
child learns his/her inheritance is less than that of another sibling, simply
destroying a last will forces the court to make the final decision of
inheritance distribution and will most often include the disinherited child.
• Fraudulently Changing Pages Within a Will to benefit one beneficiary
over another. In today’s electronic age it is not difficult to reproduce
pages and language of existing documents. It may only require a single
page change to the language of beneficiary distribution.
• Preparing a Fraudulent Will, Changing Pages or Forging Signatures
In this age of computers, scanners, graphic computer software and colored
printers, it has become easy to prepare documents, change pages to a set
of documents, scan a person’s signature and manipulate the signatures
into color so they appear original.
Precautions can be taken to prevent someone from committing estate fraud
such as appointing two executors, discuss your estate plan with family members
or beneficiaries who are included in your will, and notifying beneficiaries about
the inheritance specifics.
If you suspect estate fraud you should immediately contact a probate
litigation attorney to represent you against the dishonest Headless Horseman
in your family to prevent them from stealing the family inheritance and
disappearing as a spirit into the night.
A diagnosis they never dreamed
For members of Warriors on
“It really is a cool sisterhood, and
it really has been a blessing for
me because I’m a four-time cancer
survivor [non-Hodgkin’s disease at
18 and three times with breast cancer],
and I’m 60 now,” said Justine
Finocchiaro-Doles, team president
and fellow paddler for the past
five years. “Some think we are a
kind of support group ... We are
what.”
from the original team, playfully
nicknamed “OGs” for original gangsters,
are still members today.
“All of the members are usually recommended
by a fellow survivor [or]
a doctor/nurse practitioner,” Justine
said. “We even had some ladies
who just signed up that just finished
their chemotherapy and radiation
and may not have hair, but they want
to get out there and know that they
are alive, are exercising and are enjoying
the fresh air.”
The team usually practices twice
a week, Wednesday nights and
Saturday mornings, on Lake Fairview
in Winter Park. Each practice focuses
on a different aspect of paddling a
dragon boat, from starts to improving
technique to being in sync as a team.
“When you are paddling in the
dragon boat, you are paddling on
the side, so you are paddling differently,”
Justine said. “Basically, it is
the start that is going to do it for you.
When you do a start, that is when
you get your power going.”
Last year, the team traveled to
Florence in Italy to take part in the
International Breast Cancer Paddlers
Commission competition that occurs
every four years, with New Zealand
being the next competition location in
2022. They have also competed statewide
in Tampa, Clermont and South
Florida, and plan to go to Vermont
next year as part of participating in
one out-of-state competition a year.
Paddling Brings Renewed Life
The average age of team members
can be from 45 to 70, and recently,
the team celebrated its 10th anniversary
at Lake Fairview, where new
and former members came together
to commemorate the years WOW
has impacted their lives individually
and as a group of survivors.
Being a nonprofit means a lot of
fundraising takes place, which allows
the team to mingle with the
community to gain its support. A
Pink Bingo to raise funds took place
last month, as did a poker run that,
along with the anniversary party, led
to three women requesting information
about the team.
“We are always looking for new
members, and the team means the
world to me,” Justine said. “My mom
just passed away in August, and it
has been hard for me, and the team
has done what they can to cheer me
up. In my latest bout with breast cancer,
they were all there to help me
out.”
She is not alone in her belief that
the team is more than a team but is a
lifelong sisterhood.
“Warriors on Water is the best
thing to come from having breast
cancer,” said Pam Elliot, a teammate
and three-year breast cancer
survivor. “I feel so blessed to be a
part of this team. [I] love all these
ladies!”
“Our races are heartwarming
and an adrenaline rush,” said twoyear
breast cancer survivor Corine
Fahlsing.
“Warriors on Water is the best
thing for me,” said teammate and
cancer survivor Kim Ponder. “This
team is my bonus sisters and one
positive thing from having that ‘C.’”
Teammate Vicki Magacz concluded
it best: “This team has been
The city of Ocoee celebrated
from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 to recognize
the diverse contributions of its
Hispanic and Latino residents. A
proclamation of Hispanic Heritage
Month was read at the Ocoee City
As part of Ocoee’s celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month, Hispanic art is
displayed at the city’s town hall.
compiled by Lauren Salinero
Commission meeting in September.
Motorists traveling on Clarke Road
saw festive “Ocoee Celebrates
Hispanic Heritage Month” pole banners
along the street, and colorful
framed posters, featuring Hispanic
art, greeted visitors to Ocoee City
Hall. The city’s governmental station,
Ocoee TV, aired a series titled Latino
Americans: The 500-Year Legacy
that Shaped a Nation. The six-hour
documentary featured interviews
with nearly 100 Latinos, as well as
more than 500 years of history.
Ocoee residents have the chance
to give feedback about the city’s
parks and recreation programs. The
city is updating its Comprehensive
Plan and the Parks, Recreation, &
Trails Master Plan and is asking residents
to take an online community
survey. The survey, which the city
is conducting in partnership with
the East Central Florida Regional
Planning Council, will provide questions
focusing on city parks, recreation
and trails. The city is asking
citizens to give their thoughts on existing
parks, recreational programs
and special events. Results from the
survey will be used to guide future
decisions on programming and
how to improve the city’s park system.
The Vascular Experts — Florida
Largest Vascular Surgery Practice in the U.S. Comes to Central Florida
There’s a new medical specialty office
in town.
The Vascular Experts —
Florida, which opened a new location
in Windermere on Sept. 9, is
part of the largest vascular surgery
practice in the country. Formed in
2001, The Vascular Experts is a nationwide
medical group with a total
of 13 offices — in Connecticut,
Rhode Island and Florida. It is composed
of board-certified surgeons
who have dedicated their entire
careers to the treatment of vascular
diseases and care.
Lina M. Vargas, M.D., FACS,
RPVI, is the board-certified vascular
surgeon who leads The Vascular
Experts — Florida practice. She specializes
in vascular and endovascular
surgeries.
“The new location will provide
Greater Orlando-area residents with
an advanced level of vascular and
vein care that is less invasive,” Dr.
Vargas said.
Upon receiving her medical degree,
Dr. Vargas completed her
postgraduate medical training at the
prestigious Cleveland Clinic in Ohio,
where she also completed a research
fellowship in cardiac and vascular
surgery. She served as clinical
tonyrappa@capturevideo-photo.com
associate in the department of vascular
surgery at Duke University in
North Carolina. Upon relocating to
Orlando, she joined the Vascular
Institute of Central Florida — Florida
Hospital Medical Group. Dr. Vargas
is not new to Orlando but new to The
Vascular Experts.
“Our mission is to provide comprehensive
and compassionate vascular
care to patients in our community,”
Dr. Vargas said. “I am excited to
provide the highest quality services
in a very friendly and welcoming
environment. Patients are our No. 1
priority, and we are proud to offer
exceptional vascular care in Central
Florida.”
Vascular disease is a class of
diseases of the blood vessels. The
body’s arteries and veins of the circulatory
system make up the blood
vessels, which carry blood to and
from the heart. Disorders in this vast
network of blood vessels can cause
a range of health problems that can
be severe and even prove fatal.
The practice’s goal is to provide
leading-edge medical technology
and the use of modern endovascular
therapies, as well as traditional procedures
for the treatment of vascular
disease. Vascular diseases treated
PROMOTIONAL FEATURE
include deep vein thrombosis, venous
insufficiency, varicose and
spider veins, deep venous disease,
chronic venous stasis and venous
ulcers, phlebolymphedema, dialysis
access, central venous access, inferior
vena cava filter, carotid artery
disease and stroke prevention, aneurysm
disease, peripheral arterial
disease and diabetes/prevention of
foot problems.
“Dr. Vargas’s vast experience
and commitment to our patients
have been a great asset to Central
Florida,” said Amanda Lindley,
MHA, practice administrator. “We
truly value the comfort and convenience
that this office provides as we
continue to deliver the highest level
of vascular care to our patients.”
Dr. Vargas maintains affiliations
with the American College
of Surgeons, Society for Vascular
Surgery, Society for Clinical Vascular
Surgery, Vascular & Endovascular
Surgical Society, Women in Thoracic
Surgery, and Cardiothoracic
Surgery Network. She has privileges
at AdventHealth and, soon, Orlando
Health hospitals.
Patients are invited to explore The
Vascular Experts — Florida website
at tveflorida.com to learn more
tonyrappa@capturevideo-photo.com
about the extensive services and
knowledge the practice provides.
The Vascular Experts — Florida
provide personalized, comfortable
and convenient care in their new,
state-of-the-art facility. They have the
capability of performing endovascular
procedures in their office-based
lab, thus avoiding long, complicated
check-in and -out processes and extensive
waiting times. Full vascular
lab capabilities allow for a full comprehensive
evaluation in the comfort
of the office. Based on the evaluation,
they will make lifestyle recommendations,
provide medical management
and perform open vs. endovascular
procedures if indicated.
The Vascular Experts — Florida
suggests patients be aware of sudden
body changes or new conditions
to disclose when making an appointment.
In order to foster patient/doctor
understanding, the glossary of
terms listed in the patient resources
section of the website will help patients
verbalize what they are experiencing
and understand prescribed
treatment options.
The Vascular Experts — Florida is located at 13528
Summerport Village Parkway in Windermere. For
more information or to make an appointment, call
407-612-7738 or visit www.tveflorida.com. ª

n West Orange Trail gets
surveillance camera
Workers with the Orange County
Parks and Recreation Division installed
four new surveillance cameras
on multiuse pedestrian trails. The
West Orange Trail, Pine Hills Trail,
Little Econ Greenway and Cady Way
Trail each have a camera placed in
a strategic location with the goal of
preventing after-hours activity.
The division worked with the
Orange County Sheriff’s Office to
determine suitable locations on the
trails, which close after sunset. The
solar-powered FlashCam systems
take still photos, with voice commands
informing people that a photo
has been taken, and they should
leave the area. Each camera cost
$7,000. Because the cameras are
portable, each can be moved to various
areas.
n Algae warning for
Lake Olivia
Officials of the Florida Department
of Health in Orange County received
a communication from the
Florida Department of Environmental
Protection that surface water sampling
recently took place. From the
sampling, toxins were confirmed
through laboratory identification for
Lake Olivia near Gotha Road and
Hempel Avenue in west Orange
County. DOH-Orange has issued a
health alert for Lake Olivia for the
presence of microcystin toxin, which
is produced and released by blue
green algae (cyanobacteria). DOH-
Orange Environmental Health staff
posted signage at Lake Olivia at the
north boat ramp until further notice.
Blue green algae can grow in
many of the state’s bodies of water.
Large concentrations, called blooms,
can change the water color to blue,
green, brown, orange or red. Blooms
can appear year-round but are
more frequent in summer and fall.
Blue green algae can grow rapidly
and sometimes form a foamy surface
scum and an unpleasant odor.
Because algae blooms can remove
oxygen from the water, fish kills can
occur.
People shouldn’t swallow, swim,
wade, use personal watercraft, water-ski
or boat in waters where there
are algae blooms. Algae blooms can
cause ear, eye and skin reactions,
and hay fever and flu-like symptoms
like diarrhea. If you have contact
with algae, discolored or smelly water,
wash your skin and clothing with
soap and clean water. Waters where
there are algae blooms are not safe
for animals either. Pets and livestock
should have a different source of water
when algae blooms are present.
Heart of Florida United Way is furthering
the fight against cybercrime
in Orange, Osceola and Seminole
residents to report instances of cybercrime
HFUW is the first 2-1-1 call center in
Cybercrime includes identity
theft, financial fraud, cyberstalking,
cyberbullying and other related
crimes. Cybercrime is a pervasive,
stealth crime that preys on vulnerable
populations and often
leaves victims struggling with few
resources for economic or emotional
recovery. However, Central
Florida cybercrime victims can now
n Breast and cervical cancer
screenings
In recognition of National Breast
Cancer Awareness Month, officials
of the Florida Department of Health
in Orange County encourage
women to receive regular screenings
to promote early detection
and treatment of breast cancer.
Important advances have been
made through increased awareness,
breast cancer screenings and
better treatments.
According to the CDC, not counting
some kinds of skin cancer,
breast cancer is the most common
cancer in women in the U.S., no
matter a person’s race or ethnicity.
American Cancer Society officials
estimate 19,130 new cases are expected
in Florida this year alone. In
2018, 2,955 women in Florida died
from female breast cancer; and, in
Orange County, 145 women died
from female breast cancer.
The Florida Breast and Cancer
and Cervical Cancer Early Detection
Program provides access to the
breast and cervical cancer screenings
doctors recommend. The screenings
are free or low cost for those
who meet the program eligibility
requirements.
