Weedons stuns defending champs

IT HAS only taken one week for
a major boilover to take place
in Canterbury Country premier
cricket with Weedons beating
defending 45-over champions
Leeston-Southbridge by two
runs, on Saturday.
It was effectively the opening
round of the premier cricket season
after week one was rainedoff.
Contributions from the topthree
of the Weedons batting
line-up set the platform at
Rangiora’s MainPower Oval.
Openers James Watson (22),
and James Richards (28), put on
an opening stand of 51 in trying
conditions before wicket-keeper/
batsman Todd Inness anchored
the innings with 42.
He found support from Brad
Nightingale, who added 28.
However, when he departed at
124 for four, it sparked a collapse
as Weedons lost their last seven
wickets for 14 runs to be bowled
out for 139.
Leeston-Southbridge opening
bowler Sam Chamberlain was
the chief-destroyer taking 4-21.
Leeston-Southbridge were
in early trouble at 26 for two
before Harry Chamberlain (37),
Tim Gruijters (36) and Ben
Chamberlain (24) steadied the
middle-order.
However, like Weedons,
they got precious few runs from
their lower-order as they lost
