councillors
more than 50 per cent higher than his
only rival Bill Woods (4437 votes).
Mr Broughton said he was very
happy with the result and wanted to
thank Selwyn for their support.
Mr Broughton said the district
council had made a lot of progress
over the last three years.
This includes making made major
investments in community infrastructure,
completed earthquake works,
and changing its consultation process
to focus on speaking with residents on
streets rather than in meetings.
He said it will be important the district
council keeps costs in line with
what it has signalled to ratepayers.
Mr Woods said he had stood to give
people an alternative.
Councillors Murray Lemon, Jeff
Bland, Bob Mugford, Grant Miller,
Debra Hasson, Mark Alexander,
Nicole Reid and former Deputy Mayor
Malcolm Lyall have all been re-elected
to their respective wards.
• Geoff Booth has been unsuccessful
in his bid for a spot on the Canterbury
District Health Board.
For nearly two years Mr Booth, of
Greendale, has been battling to seek
answers from health authorities after
losing his 21-year-old son Liam to
suspected suicide in 2017.
He decided to run for the CDHB in
a bid to focus on mental health and
raise awareness on suicide.
Selwyn Central Ward
too close to call
• By Devon Bolger
TWO SELWYN Central
Ward candidates are waiting
with bated breath for the final
local body election results to
be released.
Preliminary results show
Sophie McInnes currently
holds the fourth district
council spot for the ward but
Michelle Jones is sitting just
seven votes behind her.
Special votes are still to be
counted and the final results
will be released on Thursday.
Mrs McInnes currently sits
on 2306 votes and Mrs Jones
is on 2299.
Calvin Payne isn’t far
behind that with 2202 votes.
Mrs McInnes said it feels
like she is in a holding pattern
waiting to hear the
results.
“It is exciting but I think I
probably would rather know.
I know Michelle will do a
great job if she gets it, it is a
lot harder when you like the
person,” she said.
Progress results were
Sophie McInnes
released at 2pm on Saturday
and had Michelle Jones in the
fourth spot.
When preliminary results
were released at 2pm on
Sunday, Mrs McInnes had
jumped ahead.
Said Mrs McInnes: “After
the first results came out
I knew there were a whole
lot of votes that hadn’t been
counted yet and I knew it
could change so I didn’t want
to get too down to start with.’
“And then it did change
and I was thinking oh wow
but then it was only by seven
Michelle Jones
votes so everything’s just on
hold for now.”
Mrs Jones said she is also
just waiting to hear the final
results.
“I am looking forward to
Thursday. Obviously, the race
is extremely close and you
just can’t call it at this point,”
she said.
“I mean I am hopeful but it
is so close. It is hard not being
in the top bit right now.
“Either way, it is a good
thing for the district council
to have new blood,’’ Mrs
Jones said.
