SKIN MYTHS DEBUNKED! If you’ve ever found yourself hitting Google about skin troubles, this article is definitely for you. We sat down with local dermatologist, Dr Tarryn Jacobs to debunk some of the most common skin-care myths. And you’ll be surprised at some of her answers ... ALL-NATURAL PRODUCTS ARE THE BEST OPTION FOR DAILY SKINCARE ‘There is a common misconception that natural or organic products are better or safer when it comes to taking the best care of our skin. And, yes, the word ‘natural’ does mean that products are made from ingredients that originate from plants or herbal extracts. There is, however, evidence that indicates that these botanicals may act as sensitisers and cause skin irritation or allergic reactions much in the same way synthetic ingredients could,’ Dr Tarryn Jacobs explains. In addition, there is often no regulation on what is labelled as ‘natural’. She advises that it’s best to speak to an expert to ensure you are investing in skincare products that are safe and appropriate for your particular needs and skin type. YOU’LL EVENTUALLY OUTGROW ACNE We know this isn’t necessarily something you would want to hear, but contrary to popular belief, acne is not just a teenage problem. ‘In fact, recent studies have reported a significant increase in adult acne, mostly among women. One significant factor is the role hormones play; pregnancy and menopause are common culprits. In addition, triggers for acne such as 24 Get It Pretoria July 2019 stress and use of oil-based cosmetics may occur at any age,’ says Dr Jacobs. DRINKING SIX TO EIGHT GLASSES OF WATER PER DAY WILL IMPROVE YOUR SKIN Most of us grew up with the recommendation of drinking at least six to eight glasses of water per day as a way to help keep your body and skin hydrated. ‘This is actually a myth unless you are severely dehydrated and ill. Drinking sufficient amounts of water will benefit your general health and physiology, but there’s a lack of scientific evidence that it impacts skin hydration,’ says Dr Jacobs. In order to have glowing and hydrated skin, your skin layers need to have the right water retaining elements such as ceramides, essential fatty acids and a natural moisturising factor to stay hydrated. A BASE TAN IS AN EASY WAY TO PROTECT SKIN FROM SUN DAMAGE Although few will admit to it, this is something a lot of people have done. But it’s a common misconception that getting a base tan and thus prepping your skin for long periods in the sun can help prevent sun damage to your skin. ‘The reason for this myth is that a ‘base tan’ has been found in studies to give a person an SPF (sun protection factor) of 3-4. This basically means that that the skin can indeed be exposed to up to four times as much sun before burning than without the base tan,’ explains Dr Jacobs. The problem lies, however, in the fact that a base tan is by no means safe and definitely not as effective as a sunscreen. ‘Any tan is an indication of damage to the skin from UV radiation. Accumulated damage causes cellular mutations in the skin and this eventually leads to skin cancer. This is why it is always important to protect your skin with a broad-spectrum, waterresistant sunscreen of at least SPF 30,’ Dr Jacobs advises. THE SPF IN MOISTURISER AND MAKE-UP IS ENOUGH TO PROTECT YOUR SKIN Make-up and moisturiser containing sunscreen might seem pretty convenient, but don’t be fooled to rely on it for total protection against the sun’s harmful rays. ‘Generally speaking, no one uses enough moisturiser to get effective sun protection. Although your moisturiser might say SPF 15 or SPF 30 on the label, it’s dependent on the amount of moisturiser you put on your face. I always recommend applying an SPF on top of your moisturiser. You actually
need about the amount of a teaspoon to adequately protect your face,‘ Dr Jacobs says. LUXURY AND EXPENSIVE SKINCARE IS BETTER Yes, we’ve all heard this: buying more expensive or luxury skincare products doesn’t necessarily mean it is more effective. ‘Often a higher cost can be a reflection of branding, marketing and packaging. I always tell patients that the best way to choose a skincare product is by looking at the type and concentration of ingredients. Let science guide you in choosing active ingredients (for example retinol, alpha-hydroxy acids, niacinamide) based on your specific skin concerns,’ Dr Tarryn says. Note, however, that these ingredients do need to be well-formulated to work and in some cases professional-grade products are more likely to be correctly formulated. YOUR GENES DETERMINE THE RATE AT WHICH YOU AGE It is true that genetics play a part in the skin-ageing process, as the natural process of ageing is indeed programmed and controlled by our genes. ‘External factors adding to the process are largely from sun exposure, which is also called photo-aging. Other scientifically proven external causes include smoking and air pollution. So to a certain extent, genetics do influence the way your skin ages, but your lifestyle can play a far more significant role,’ Dr Jacobs explains.
